Grissom popped the question, and Sara said yes! William Petersen and Jorja Fox by Robert Voets/CBS
Episode Recap: “The Case of the Cross-Dressing Carp"
Wow! As you all know from reading my preview item, I did not see this coming! Especially because of Michael Ausiello’s scoop — Jorja Fox is still leaving, though she may flit in and out of CSI kingdom from time to time. But despite all of that, when Grissom popped the question, Sara said yes!
Let me tell you, I heart this proposal. Heart heart heart! Spontaneous declarations of love are always better than scripted, pre-thought out speeches, don’t you think? I haven’t always been on board with Grissom and Sara’s relationship, but after tonight’s episode, I’ll support them no matter what! It was perfectly sweet and lovely. Only one thing darkened what should have been a storybook moment — despite Sara telling Grissom that she trusted him to keep her safe, she got stung by a bee anyway. Is this a dark omen, a sign of things to come? The knowledge that Jorja Fox is leaving the show makes me think that it is, but I really don’t want it to be! Now that I’m finally on board with this relationship, we know that it has to end. I’m bummed.
Also bumming me out — though not in a Jeers kind of way — is this week’s main story line. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was fabulous. But during a week when Al Gore won a Nobel Prize for drawing attention to global warming, this episode about terrible things in the environment — terrible things that we put there — got to me. Brian is an 18-year-old found hanging from a tree with male genitalia and breasts. An intersexual? A pre-op sex change? A victim of a hate crime? It turns out he was none of these things. The ground water where he lived was so polluted with pharmaceutical waste that it actually threw off his hormonal imbalance, causing him to grow breasts while at the same time causing the local carp to have both male and female organs. In the end, it was a hate crime — Brian hated himself so much that he hung himself from a tree.
But the mystery didn’t end there. Paul Cydon — a person of interest in the case who was a retired scientist — was found dead in his home, shot three times through the chest. The CSIs suspect the manager of the water treatment plant (also known as the father from Boy Meets World!) killed the scientist to keep him from spreading the word about the contaminated water. He certainly had a wonderful motive. But in this, at least, he wasn’t guilty. The shooter was Brian’s mother, who suspected Paul of something untoward. She had no idea what was going on in her son’s life. She had no idea how unhappy he was.
For the first time this season, I liked the secondary case just as much as the main case — maybe more! Catherine and her mom are at the site of her dad’s old casino, the Rampart, which, you remember, was demolished last season to make room for his new casino. Despite Sam’s death, the casino is being built when they find a body. It may or may not be a number of deceased — a chimpanzee, a mobster, a soldier from Vietnam. He turns out to be a journalist who was covering a story at the Rampart the night it opened. He found out that Sam was bribing a gaming official, and one of Sam’s people took him out. But the thing I liked best was Greg’s outrageous enthusiasm for the old Vegas stories. We’ve seen this from him before, but I loved it even more this time around.
There are so many things to talk about with this episode! What did you guys think of the cases? And, most importantly, the proposal? And what do you think about all of it in the context of Jorja Fox leaving? Leave your comments here!

Ok. I just want to say I absolutely LOVED the proposal! I'm so excited to see how this turns out, but it better be for the good of us GSR-ers!! She is leaving... soon! I hope they end it, without ending it! I loved how she said yes, and how they 'tried' to kiss - only delaying the fact of actually having any contact, maybe saving it for her last episode? Although if her last scene is by herself, as we learned in Ausiello's article, how can this turn out good for us? All this time, knowing it's going to end? I'm so sad about this.
As for the episode. Did anyone else notice Catherine said she was Supervisor? Is this new, or am I just slow? Are her and Grissom like Co-Supervisors? I also thought this episode was pretty good. I liked the B story better than the A story. I just thought it was a more interesting case. AND is Catherine going to leave now by outing the case? She sure seemed like she'd take the firing to get the story out there! That scares me a little too. I don't want everyone to just start leaving all at once.
Well, I was a little disappointed not to hear William Peterson's voice at the end of the show with a, "Stayed tuned for scenes from our next episode!" I guess we'll have to wait two whole weeks before we see what happens next!

I tell ya, I too wondered if we'd even get an answer tonight and so when she said yes and just beamed with happiness I literally cried. You have just gotten on board with GSR so imagine how those of us who have loved it for 7 1/2 years feel? Just so happy. I too wondered about the sting thing but I thought maybe it was a pheromone reaction because of the rush she got after he proposed or it could have been symbolic of the 'for better or worse' aspect of marriage. The whole not knowing what could happen. Either way, I'm not going to let it spoil this wonderful scene. Time will reveal all, for tonight I feel like a 7 year journey has finally come to it's proper fruition. And these two actors are just phenomenal. Wanted a kiss but I can wait for that

I'm not a GSR fan, so I almost didn't watch tonight's episode because of the way CBS promo-ed it. Thank goodness, for me and others, it wasn't like they showed. That proposal, made huge in promos, was such a small part of the show. As for the CSI part, those stories were great and actually better than usual. More of that, please.

We finally got to see a few more minutes of Nick!! Yay!! And then Greg even had a bigger role in this one and I was majorly excited!! I loved Greg's hat and his enthusiasm for the old stories! I still enjoy seeing Hodges, too. So it was good to see the 3 I like seeing back on the screen and for more time. I was glad too the proposal was only a small part and I still don't like the Grissom/Sara angle. So I was glad the proposal was handled this way and not the big romantic kind and with kissing, etc. Then I would have had to turn off the TV as I don't tune in to CSI for that. I can find that in other shows I choose to watch. To each, his/her own I guess. But at least there was more time for some of the other incredible actors this week!!
As for Cath, I agree with how she felt. Morally, a job like that would be hard if you had information and you couldn't share it without losing everything. Plus someone mentioned she said supervisor -- I think she was still kind of considered a supervisor despite moving back to shift with Grissom. She did have an office still. Plus it could be too that she is supposed to be the supervisor over Sara & Ronnie, as Sara has to be on a different shift and maybe Cath is saying she's supervising them. I would think with her senority though that she would be the backup supervisor to Grissom and have the rank of it. All in all, an okay episode. I'm hoping it picks up some speed and improves as the season goes on and preferably with more Nick & Greg!!!

I'll admit I liked the proposal scene--I didn't watch any promos or read any spoilers, but somehow I knew something like this was going to happen in this episode. However, I seem to be the only longtime viewer who has never sensed any true chemistry between Grissom and Sara. True, we only see them at work (except for the brief scene with the two of them in their post-coital bathrobes last season), but we never see them exchange the kind of smiles or comments that lovers quietly share, or plans like "I want to take you to a great place for dinner tonight" or ANYTHING that indicates a real relationship between two adults. So how are we supposed to get excited for them when their exchanges have been so emotionally flat, humorless, and fleeting? I just don't get it. I know they wanted to, or had to, keep it secret in the workplace--until Sara went missing--but I'd hardly call their relationship one of the great romances on T.V.
Still, the proposal gives hope that the last few episodes with Jorja Fox might show us a little more spark between Sara and Grissom.

I too loved the proposal scene, & her answer was perfectly in character.
I think--I hope!--that what Catherine wants to do is talk the mother into coming forward. She's already got a death sentence imposed on her, so she could do a lot of good speaking out. And I love Gail O'Grady (Alan Shore, you should have had a baby with her!).
I really enjoyed the Grissom/Hodges scene, and I thought it was very kind & insightful of Grissom to treat Hodges the way he did. Very nice.

I liked this episode. I liked the B-story better than the main story. Sara hoping that the skeleton was an ancient native american reminded me of the episode where she found a poached gorilla. I thought the proposal was appropriate - not too mushy - and I liked Grissom and Sara's interactions with Cath and Hodges afterwards. Question: was Billy Petersen really handling the bees or was do you think they changed people for the close-up shots and it was a real beekeepers hands we saw? I know Billy has done some of his own stunts in the past, but bees sting. Do you think the camera crew was decked out in bee suits as well as the actors?

One thing I forgot to mention. I loved Catherine's remark on seeing the cooler of fish--"Carpe diem." It reminded me of an exchange on Buffy: the Vampire Slayer.
Willow: Carpe Diem.
Buffy: Seize the fish?

I think the episode was fun yet sad. I was tickled by the proposal. I loved Sara's joy that he asked. I liked Catherine's moment with her mom, for once she wasn't berating her mom about being with Sam. Loved how she owned up to the part of "my dad built this one". So happy she realized the conflict of interest...hindsight etc. I think the producers or someone mentioned that Cath will be leaving the CSI lab for a while and perhaps focusing on private investigations with big law firms so I really feel that she may blow the whistle on the water. If Erika Alexander is the new DA, she will be great, hope this was not a one shot deal. No Brass in this ep?? missed him. Greg was too cute. And I am liking Ronnie Lake. She is new and eager, but not totally Green in the field. I like Catherine and Warrick's friendship, but hope that is all it will ever be. They have a nice chemistry and for once, can't we leave it at two people being there for each other as friends. Anyway, nice episode, sad crime. Catherine actually was torn between the mom getting off and wanting someone to pay...I felt the same way, cancer or not, she took a life and the life she took was of someone who was only trying to help.

From good to great is how I describe this season of CSI. This episode was great.
There are too many one-liners and scenes for me to mention. Everyone seemed to click. So here's my favorites:
Catherine goes for a family history trip and a crime scene breaks out.
Greg helping Sara and going out with Lily.
"Tucson, the capital of Texas"
"Like when we worked on the Miniature Killer Case." "Yeah, that was fun."
Oh, there are too many scenes, looks, and laughs for one episode. Thank you to the writers.
As for the proposal scene. I liked it. As a geek/nerd married to a geek/nerd I could identify with it. It wasn't all dinner and roses, which you don't expect from Grissom. When girlfriends would share proposal stories, I always have the boring one, but that doesn't mean our marriage is less strong or love less worthy. Our proposal is us and that's what makes it special to me. Besides, I guess Grissom and Sara "beelong" together.
So since Sara is leaving, it will be interesting to see this played out. Will she be the wife we hear but don't see? Only time will tell.
Hopefully the episode in two weeks will continue the greatness.
PS. Great recap this week. I really enjoyed reading it.

I liked this episode of CSI, but there was a lot of sadness with the main storyline. The mother has recurring breast cancer. Her son had been "feminized" by polluted water, and decided to kill himself after being laughed at. The scientist trying to help him and expose the contaminated water gets killed by the grieving mother. The company responsible for the water pollution will probably never be held accountable. Oy. I did, however, really like the way that Grissom "proposed." It was so him, just matter of factly without any big to do about it. I'm not a GSR fan, but that was nice to see on tv when most proposals are made to be so overblown. I wonder how this will play out with Jorja leaving the show.

Uh oh... CSI is recyclying lines...lol.
When Nick or Warrick said at the end about the kid who'd mutilated himself... "It was a hate crime... He hated himself."
It was the EXACT same line Grissom used in the episode with the little person convention. I know this b/c this episode was on Spike from 7-8pm. tsk tsk tsk...lol
Ok, I did like the proposal.. not too sappy, not too cold. Although, am I the only one who noticed this reticent, almost slightly regretful, look on Sara's face when Hodges stopped her in the hallway afterward?
My favorite interaction of the night?
Sara - "Hodges, here's the trouble..."
Hodges - "You know, that's just what my mother says when I ask to come home for Thanksgiving..."
He's so pathetic....
Ok, and now here's my "whaaaat?" comment of the week:
Am I the only one who thought for a second after meeting the mom that maybe the boy was "growing" boobs for his mom b/c he felt bad about her masectomy?
I have issues, I know...

I expected to be kind of disappointed with the proposal since I know Jorja's leaving but I totally swooned! And I knew the bee would sting her! She probably clenched her fist or something in shock. LOL. Then kissing with bee garb on? *falls out of chair laughing*
Greg really outdid himself with the Vegas history. He is hilarious and so adorable. And Hodgins' whole "we're working together again" routine with Grissom was funny. I can remember a time when Grissom would've bitten his head off for those remarks but he's mellowed considerably.
The B story was definitely more interesting. I called the mom killing the scientist from the beginning and the whole contaminated water thing was given away in the first seconds of the ep. At least they had to do a little digging (no pun intended) to discover the casino victim. And Hodgins' excitement about the bone test was cute.
Has anyone else noticed that there are barely any lab personnel left? I know they've rarely been front and center (last season's lab rat ep aside) but they just seem to be gone now. And does anyone else get the vibe (like with Catherine) that this is the show's last season? That hit me very strongly last nite. I don't read the gossip and spoilers so that's just my own observation.
