February 11, 2007: Valentine's Day Massacre

So much happened last night that it could have taken weeks for a typical family to sort out every event. Thank goodness the Walkers don’t keep secrets. All it took was one four-way conversation for everyone to know that Kitty slept with the senator, Kevin slept with Scotty, Justin slept with Tyler, and Nora spent the night in jail.

Kitty and the senator were the big story, obviously. Once we found out that a business trip had them spending Valentine’s Day together, it became apparent that something would happen between them. Things started off romantically, but there's so much potential for complication. It seems fairly certain that issues will come up at work and/or with their families. On a side note, I did like the senator’s comment that he “always had a thing for Demi Moore,” Rob Lowe and Demi Moore of course both being members of the Brat Pack.

Valentine’s Day didn’t go quite as smoothly for Kevin. Dealing with his ex-boyfriend and his secret boyfriend in the same night proved to be difficult, and no one ended up happy. It was pretty hypocritical of Chad to be mad at Kevin for sleeping with Scotty, given their situation. I was glad to see Scotty back, although he and Kevin’s night together didn’t seem to leave room for a real reunion. It’s ironic that the only one who has no clue as to what’s really going on is Chad’s girlfriend Michelle. Speaking of Michelle, Roxy Olin really does bear a very strong resemblance to her mother, Patricia Wettig, as several people have commented.

Things are looking up for Justin, and he only had to go to nearly every Italian restaurant in the city to find out for sure. It didn’t seem like the most appropriate thing to do while babysitting Paige and Cooper, but it was pretty cute when they started cheering after Tyler told Justin she wanted to see him again. Things ended on a high note for Nora as well, although unfortunately it was the kind of high that had her spending a night in jail with her friend Emily (guest star Margot Kidder).

Finally, Holly was back and up to her old tricks, i.e., making things tense in the Walker family. I’m not sure I fully believe that she was just making an innocent suggestion to Tommy, especially now that we know that he plans to vote with her on the winery issue. Tommy appears to be more serious than the other Walker siblings in general, as seen in his absence from the gossipy phone conversation in the opening minutes of the episode. At times Tommy seems a little bit separated from his siblings, and it doesn’t look like siding with Holly is going to help matters.

Not only were Rob & Demi members of the Brat Pack, but I also felt that the shout out to Demi was referencing the movie About Last Night where they played a couple. His character also tried to hook up with her character in St. Elmo's Fire.

Funny episode last night. I agree it was good to see Scotty. I missed a few minutes, but was Scotty the one that Chad's girlfriend wanted to set Kevin up with? If so , I always kind of dislike those coincidental "gee I am being set up with my ex" moments, but still enjoyed the show on the whole.

I know I've said this on here before, but Sally Field is freakin awesome. I love her in every scene!

I was kinda skeptical about the Senator coming into the mix but I am loving his scenes with Kitty. He has such a great effect on her.

I too hope we see more of Scotty. He's adorable, first of all, and secondly he's so comfortable with who he is. I don't know many people, gay or straight, who are that comfortable with themselves. I think he is good for Kevin.

Can't wait for next week!

I loved the four (five?) way phone call at the beginning of the episode. It reminded me of how we first met the Walkers in the pilot. And I did notice that Tommy wasn't involved, which seems to be the case quite often. Obviously Holly has picked up on that and is using it to her advantage. Telling Saul that as soon as the words left her mouth she realized it was a mistake is a little ridiculous. She said the same thing to Nora after her boardroom speech, and both times these were planned, thought out speeches, not something blurted out in the heat of the moment. Even if what she told Tommy is true, would William have wanted his children divided like this?
And jayhawk, yes, Scotty was the one Chad's girlfriend set Kevin up with. I felt really bad for Scotty last night, and really bad for Kevin. Their goodbye last night felt more final than their last one did, which is sad.
And Nora high - funniest thing ever!

I'll probably be in the minority here, but this was just an OK ep for me. I just can't get Ally McBeal out of my mind when I see and hear CF, with her wordy, "Not that I wouldn't, but if I did, but blah blah." Sounds just like Ally M. I do like Rob Lowe, but this storyline can't really go anywhere. And if someone doesn't "loosen" up Holly's steel hair strands/extensions. Yes, she sure is stirring the pot, but I guess that's what her character is suppose to do. And she does it with such glee in her eyes, while protesting otherwise. I'm just waiting on EVC as Rebecca and really see some fireworks.

When an actor has a strong, particular acting style, I think it's difficult to disassociate what he or she has done in the past with what they are doing now. Sometimes you can see a little Ally in Kitty, but Calista Flockhart does a good job nonetheless.

Sally Field's style in this show is also reminiscent of some of her lighter, comedy films (Soapdish, Kiss Me Goodbye, etc.) Both of these actors don't do exactly what they did before, but there are similarities, and it's all very likeable. I'm enjoying them more and more with every show.

Kevin's situation was the most difficult one to resolve. I initially didn't think he went home with Scottie just to get back at Chad, but that was the way it appeared when they were on the phone in the morning. Chad shouldn't have put Kevin in that position to begin with. Scottie is the right one for Kevin, but we don't always see what's best even when it's right in front of us. It doesn't seem that Chad is going to hang around. The same with Scottie. Kevin is alone again. This was the biggest V-day massacre of the night.

And I used to watch every episode of "Jack & Bobby" and always like to hear the reference when they mention the name Bob/Bobby/ Senator Robert McCallister...

I've never been a Calista Flockhart fan, nor much of a Rob Lowe fan. I think they're doing well here, but together, IMO, they have zero chemistry. Those kisses are about as sexy as me kissing my dog.

And let me clarify here that that is NOT sexy!

Sally Field and Margot Kidder were fantastic together! I'm 60, too, and I totally relate to Sally feeling her life's got nothing happening. The two of them getting stoned in the car was one of the funniest, best scenes ever. I giggled, laughed, and felt like I was right there with them.

I also truly like the fact that Sally has had no plastic surgery. I love her age and smile lines, the bags under her eyes, the wrinkly neck...gee, I've lost my face, too! It is so great to see an actress who is not ashamed to be 60 and isn't trying to look 40. Whoever said 60 is the new 40 has had an awful lot of nips and tucks. Don't get me wrong, if I had the money, I'd love a little Restylane, but Sally Fields helps me feel better. I earned those lines and wrinkles!

I thought her kids' reactions to her night in jail were terrific, too. I wonder if my own would be so "cool" with it.

I love this show. It's the highlight of Sunday night for me!

Thank you, Mary Kate and Jayhawk, for breaking down the Rob/Demi connections. I was beside myself last night about the Senator's quip and was so excited to see they you were, too. Aaah...memories. I miss you, 1989.

Great recap, Mary Kate but now I have nothing to write about, you said it all!

First off, can we find out that Scotty and Kevin were switched at birth and Scotty is in fact, a Walker because I adore him! I was so happy to have him back, even if for one episode and he’s so much more put together than Kevin. His line about loving someone who hates themselves broke my heart.

And yes, when Roxy Olin first came on screen in the gym, I couldn’t get over the resemblance between her and her mother.

Speaking of Holly, I was not so much into hating her this episode. Probably because Sarah was doing a fine job of it herself. There were some great anti-Holly lines this episode and Tommy’s “for you, Holly, I have three (minutes)” jab cracked me up! You are so dead-on about Tommy too, Mary Kate, I noticed that he was the only family member who was not in the gazillion-way calling that morning. I don’t know whether they are specifically writing him that way or because with all the cast of characters, they can’t give him enough story/screen time but he’s always been the more serious of the family. Everyone else is floundering in their own messed-up affairs and Tommy is the only one who has a rock-solid relationship. That’s probably why he was so hurt when his father made Sarah president and not him and now he and Sarah are going to tousle over this winery.

And how funny/sad were Justin and Nora and the way he jumped to baby-sit to avoid hanging out with her. Kind of depresses me though and makes me not want to have kids, lol. You give them your life for 20 years and then they want nothing to do with you. On a side note, if the rumours of Sally Field and Dave Annable are true, I’m glad to see it hasn’t affected my viewing of their mother-son relationship.

I’d love to see Margot Kidder back. The scene of them getting high in the car was superb. Can’t wait for next week. Enter Emily!

I'm going to agree with TGBoyd about the episode too (although I don't blame it on Calista). It was just okay. It started off great with the phone calls and even the set-up for the events of the day was fine, but for me it didn't live up to the first few minutes.

Rob Lowe did have some great cheeky moments though. I thought of the Brat Pack when he made the Demi Moore comment, and when he said he was running for president, I thought that Sam Seaborn was finally going to rule the White House! But I have to agree with the billionaire that there are a lot of strikes against McCallister winning the nomination in the primary stage. And since the billionaire also said that McCallister has done everything in his career to become president, I'm amazed at how little time he seems to spend in D.C.

And I've finally come to the conclusion that I'm not supposed to like Holly. She's pretty evil. Mary Kate, I don't believe her talk with Tommy was innocent either. I hate to rail on a character, but does anyone see what led William to have an affair with this woman for 20-some years? Is that how long they were together? Was Nora so busy with the kids that he couldn't de-stress and talk about the business with her? I don't think Nora is less intelligent than Holly. Obviously William was sexually attracted to Holly, but to commit to a long-term affair, there had to be something more but I don't see it.
