« What About Brian

October 30, 2006: Back in the Game

So Dave is crashing at Brian's since Deena found out about the extent of his time with Suzanne. "Daddy’s on a time-out," she says to her kids during a whirlwind of a morning without Dave's help.

And in a dark bar across town, Ivy's telling the boys to have some no-strings-attached fun with all those "fish in the sea." And they better get to it, or else Jimmy won't be having any "fun," either.

Back in therapy, the stubborn marriage may be doomed for good. "It may be time to consider that your marriage is over," advises Doctor Bill. Ouch. When you hear it from a third party, it must wake you up a little bit... looked like both Dave and Deena were shocked at the thought.

I thought Brian and Adam working out the rules of their bet was pretty funny. It brought back the little back-and-forth I used to like about this show. Calling the same girl... this has got to get even funnier.

Meanwhile, in a more strings-attached kind of zone, Nic is worried about what kind of surprise is expected at her baby shower, and Deena's in chaos yet again with the kids... and no Dave.

But just because Dave's not helping out at home doesn't mean he's starting anew. Suzanne's jumping to conclusions, thinking he moved out so they could be together. But I am so happy he turns her down. I was never a fan of this relationship, and maybe it was something Dave needed to explore, but she needs to go. Problem is, I don't know if she's actually gone.

Brian's going out with Sally — the one he met in traffic school — and Adam runs into lap-dance Summer (Rachelle Lefevre) in the grocery store. "Aren't you supposed to be on your honeymoon?" she asks right before a dinner offer is put on the table. But after Brian gets hairspray in the eyes and ends up in bed with his new roomie Dave instead of Sally, a whole new set of problems plows through the sludge they've already got their shoes stuck in.

Suzanne has some bad news for the video-game duo. The business isn't going too well and we've got to wonder if "the timing" was a direct hit to Dave, but he can't even look her in the eye: "I think you've done enough." After a legal explanation from Adam, they find out they can buy their precious game back for a grand total of $75,000.

No hairspray and revenge in sight, Adam and Summer seem to be having a good date until Marjorie comes up in conversation. "You're a catch, I can tell," she admits. And when Adam puts it all on the table, you can see he's hurt, but you can also see a little hope... at least for some "fun." And then she's out of there faster than Marjorie was out of her wedding gown. Just when I think Brian and Adam are both failures in Ivy's little game of fishing out in the big blue sea, Brian's got a girl in his room. Enter Amy Jo Johnson (Felicity) as Karen aka "Car Girl" with a faceful of tears. With a newly single chick under his roof, I think Brian's not only a bet winner but also a drama magnet.

Things get even heavier when Brian visits his dad (William Devane) and asks for the 75 grand. Now we've opened a can of worms so slimy that seeing the dead goldfish in Dave and Deena's toilet bowl isn't that gross anymore.

Back in flowers-and-baby land, the girls have a heart-to-heart and Nic brings up the reason for all the hurt: Deena. The open marriage. And Dave says the words I've been waiting to hear: "Did you actually think I was going to leave my wife for you?" Better to blurt it out now, right? Right... Adam knows. "I'm trying not to be most guys," he says to Summer/Heather. A whole new door has opened while Brian feels like the ceiling is closing in on him. Car Girl is already playing lovey-dovey on Brian's computer when the boys discover Suzanne's posting their million-dollar video game on a free site with the password Dave told her. Every penny from Brian's baggy pockets is gone, and one hurt, evil mistress is taking Dave on a miserable ride called Payback.

At the coed baby shower, Deena admits she destroyed the marriage, but Dave says they're out of options. It's over.

I knew they would leave the Angelo issue until the last minute. He hasn't been on the show all season so why not drag out his departure as long as possible? Keep us hoping he'll appear? Forget it, ABC, you're not fooling us. He's dead and isn't it appropriate in his usual sorry state that Brian is the one to deliver the news? I've never seen anyone give news with only his eyes like that, though. There's a lot of staring on this show.

At least this episode introduced us to what looks to be some semipermanent characters, new story lines and hope for some more of those comedic moments Brian fans loved so much about Season 1.

And although I don't want to bring up a sore subject, I have to ask: What about Marjorie?

Ok....I haven't watched the whole show yet. I just wanted to point out that "daddy's on a time out" is the exact same answer that Lynette gave her kids about where Tom was when he slept at the pizza parlor last night on Desperate Housewives. :)

I'm so glad they are finally dealing with Angelo. As much as he loved Nic (during the summer months), it just wasn't plausibe that he would have been gone so long without much word.

Car Girl, played so well by Amy Jo Johnson does exactly what is intended...royally grates on my nerves. ~chucklin~

I am loving, loving, loving having Ivy and Jimmy on board. Loving it!

I'm guessing that Marjorie will show up again for Angelo's funeral?????

This show is this generation's "Thirtysomething"....and I'm loving it! (even though I'm more from that older generation. *s*)

I think Marjorie is also on time out lol!

I dunno why they dragged out Angelo's departure for so long. He shoulda just asked for a divorce during the first episode if they werent goin to bring him bak. Unless the show was tryin to add some real drama but we already knew he wasnt comin bak. We werent anticipating him to come bak..we were waiting for them to finally take him outta the story haha.

There's sumthin bout Ivy that puts me off but I love Jimmy.

And poor Brian once again.....this time he loses all of his $$ bcuz Dave wanted a little extramarital action hehe. ;) That man cant win can he lol

Finally figured out that Ivy was Marshall's wife on Alias. That had been bugging me. I guess Brian's going to have to go to work for his father now, which will open up a whole new non-sex-related story line, hopefully. All along this show has been way too focused on romantic relationships and sex for me, just too much of a good thing. I hope they bring a little more diversity to the story line now. But I still think Brian is the cutest thing on TV right now.

Is there any executive producer in television who recycles his actors better than J.J. Abrams? Greg Grunberg has appeared in every show J.J. has produced EXCEPT this one (don't count him out just yet), Amy Jo Johnson was a regular on Felicity, Amanda Foreman (Ivy) was on both Alias and Felicity, Kevin Weisman (Marshall on Alias) also appeared on Felicity, and he isn't working as far as I know, so keep your eyes peeled...

We've "got to wonder" if Suzanne was acting in retaliation? No, we don't. It is blatantly obvious from the moment she echoed Dave's breakup words back to him when explaining the company's backpedaling on the game: "It's not you. It's just bad timing."

I have to believe that Brian and Dave have grounds for a huge lawsuit; I wonder if they'll pursue it.

Good show last night. I hate that they killed off Angelo, I really liked him. I'm really liking Ivy and Jimmy as well.

Thanks Meera for telling me that Ivy was Marshall's wife on Alias, I knew that I knew her from somewhere. Gee...I miss that show!!

Love William Devaine playing Brian's Dad. I feel so badly for Dave and Brian, I hope that they can get Zap Monkey up and running again. I love that Dave told Suzanne off but it hurt him more in the end.

I'm wondering to if Majorie will be back. I hope so.

I can't believe that they completely tore down the original structure of the show. The premise was one single guy in a clique of all married (or coupled) friends. Now none of the original cast are coupled, and the only one with anything good is Adam, who's about to date the nicest stripper in all of LA. That last shot was devasting though (and just the right way to do it - I don't know what he would have said that could have been more effective). Wish they didn't have to fire him - I liked him and Nicole together.

Show is good, but not great. Still, the chemistry between the cast saves the whole thing.

I agree they have moved away from the original structure of the show but to be fair, how far could the show go with that plot. Though they should change the title to What About Us or something.

I'm glad Dave didn't hook up with Suz so soon but did he have to say "Did you actually think I was going to leave my wife for you?". You could hear the pain in her voice when she said "Get away from me." I liked Suz, but after what she did to the Zap Monkey biz, I must admit I like her more than ever. Does that make me a bad person?

okay I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but... Does every black guy on tv have to have a non black significant other? As a black woman it is disheartening. It's like we don't exist. Okay rant over...moving on.I like Ivy and I think they make a cute couple. She's a pretty cool wife. Love the "your not gettin any until one of them does" line.

I don't think we've seen the last of Suzanne either. I bet Deanna is going to be the one to get back at her. At least I hope so otherwise I hope Brian and Dave sue her. There has to be some kind of recourse. Brian can't work for his father forever and just give up on his dreams that quickly.

I liked Angelo but Nic as a widow has more storyline options. Trying to raise a kid alone, finding a nanny, trying to date, and losing a husband. Don't forget the Dad is in the picture now so she'll have to deal with the overbearing father too.

Last thoughts: 1.I hope Adam doesn't screw things up with the Chiropractor/stripper. 2.Brian needs to get rid of Car girl. 3. Where the HECK is Majorie? Did they get rid of her character also?

I wouldn't go so far to say you are a bad person, but you certainly are vindictive. Every mistress lives under the delusion that a man will leave his wife for her, yet she chooses to enter into an adulterous relationship anyway. Did Suzanne really think Dave was going to throw his life away on her? She is a bitch for doing that to him. I think that a nasty note in lipstick on his car would have been enough. She didn't have to go all psycho on him and ruin him financially, professionally and also take Brian down too. What did Brian do to her? She should be arrested and they should sue the pants off of her and the company she works for.
