« What About Brian
October 23, 2006: "I Am Fine."
Adam's back from Bali (his non-honeymoon) and everyone's together for a friendly BBQ... well, until Brian shows up. As if we couldn't see where the video game was headed. Tension... elbows... tackle... didn't I predict punches? Anyone could have.
Nothing's like coming into the office with a black eye. And to a desk full of pictures of random women. Strike one for Jimmy for not even taking the Marjorie pictures out from behind the new ones. Kind of defeats the purpose, if you ask me.
Meanwhile, in another office, Suzanne's got her hands on more than just business ideas. Could she be more risky during a huge meeting? I wasn't even listening to the discussion, because her sneaky stares and ridiculous IMs to Dave were make me roll my eyes incessantly.
Deena nudges Nic where it hurts. "You're just not a baby person." Ouch. For someone waddling her big belly around, that's not something you exactly want to hear on the verge of childbirth. But the ladies work it out at a concert while Dave opens a present from Suzanne. I'm torn, because I want Dave to be happy and desired, but does Suzanne even care if she's a homewrecker?
Aside from all their personal problems, the group hasn't given up on Brian and Adam yet. They keep ending up in the same place at the same time, only to stare each other down a little more.
If I'm being a little harsh this week, it's only because I want more out of these characters and I know it's there. Like the scene where Adam opens the wedding presents and drinks his sorrows into the mess of crumpled wrapping paper. That scene was the most believable.
And then we get thrown back to an awkward-but-funny moment as Deena shows up at Dave's office and introduces herself to Suzanne. Dave balances his nervous smile and sweaty-yet-decent composure pretty well considering the circumstances. Still, I admire Deena's attempt to get more involved in his life — especially after her lack of effort in the past few episodes.
Cut to a couple who may just be in even more trouble: Marjorie's at Adam's door and his black eye is in the purple phase of bruising. She's moving to Minneapolis, tears are flowing and truth is pouring out of her mouth. "You did us both a favor," Adam says. I couldn't stand to hear her explanation any more than he could. Part him, part Brian? That's got to be hard to hear. And yet, he leaves with graceful departing words: "I hope you find what you're looking for. I really do."
I had an inkling the voicemail Adam left the night he opened the wedding gifts was for Brian. I also had a feeling the champagne Dave received was from Deena. But maybe that's the predictability and fun-loving drama we enjoy so much from these lighter shows (unlike some of the other mind-boggling story lines out there, i.e. Jericho and Lost). While Adam and Brian's bar brawl turns into an arrest, Dave and Deena are finally screaming it out elsewhere. "I'm done," she says.
And somehow we get relief — in a jail cell, with bloody faces, Adam and Brian laugh about the whole thing. I applaud Matthew Davis for the most real performance tonight. I liked every expression, reaction and line he spit out.
As for everyone else, I'm a little more interested now that story lines are turning and new possibilities are on the horizon… Hey, at least Brian shaved a little, right? Maybe we're on the path to a haircut sometime soon.

Totally disagree with you on this being a fun loving drama. It was last year, but this year- not so much. Plus, it looks like Angelo is gone. Wow, pregnant widow - woo hoo, loads of fun in that.
I enjoyed the funny in this show last year which the writers apparently lost over the summer. My favorite scene from last year was Brian in the big dinosaur costume yelling at his friends about him having his own life and being an adult.

This show makes me so angry. That last scene in the cell? I find it very hard to believe that two weeks is all that is needed for Adam to get over being left at the altar. After all, it WAS all Brian's fault. First, for being such a wuss and letting Adam get on with Marjorie initially and then for trying to get between them, right before the wedding.
Also, yes, why oh why are they getting rid of Angelo? He was my favorite character on this show last season.

I liked this ep..not my fav but not bad. I dont kno who Angelo is but its a shame that they're not puttin him in the show this season.
I think it mite not be too bad for Deena and Dave to spend sum time apart...so Deena can see what she has w/ him. I fault her for most of their issues.
Hey I like Brian unshaven and w/ the long hair haha. I dont want him to cut the hair but he can shave every now and then.

This show has been annoying me all season. Yet, my wife and I continue to watch it. It like the characters to a point... that point being that just about everyone is a jack@ss. Can someone just once not cheat on someone? Dave would be my favorite by a long shot if he wasn't cheating on his wife. And bring back Angelo, one couple has to work out.
I hope Marjorie actually goes to Minniapolis. She is the most annoying of all.. though Brian may be a close second.

This show is borderline-annoying for me, too, yet I keep watching. I really do hope Marjorie's off the show, at least for a while, since it opens up the possibility for new storylines. Also, I continue to be bugged by them making her a doctor! Maybe could buy that if this was a daytime soap, but it's ridiculous on this show. Her work never even enters into the story, so why not make her something more believeable, like a PR person or a model? OK, there, I won't bring it up again.
Angelo - eh; don't care if he comes back or not. Brian's hair - leave it long! Used to hate Adam, am now starting to warm up to him.

Don't get me wrong, love this show, but I think it would've made more sense if the show started when Brian and Adam first met Marjorie on New Year's Eve. That way we would be more invested once we got to this point where at now. Also, the name What About Brian doesn't really fit anymore since it was supposed to be about these couples and their one single friend. Now everyone is single or split.

I do wonder what the plans are for the character Marjorie, and I do agree that without her there more storylines are open.
I do miss the humor from last year, but I remember a story about there being a new show runner this year, so that explains a lot. I remember it was his decison to get rid of Angelo (who I disliked anyway).

I actually thought this week's show brought back some of the humor. The scene at the office with the "12-year-old" internet host had me cracking up.
Is Marjorie off the show? If so, I guess this opens up new storyline possibilities and doesn't drag the love triangle into the ground. Although, Sarah Lancaster is great to look at.

Just a quick thought..back later to share more:
Hey, at least Brian shaved a little, right? Maybe we're on the path to a haircut sometime soon.
We've seen Barry Watson with shorter hair (after his battle with Hodgkins Disease a few years back), and it's not nearly as attractive on him. Maybe fans would have to get used to it, but I prefer the longer hair. He can keep shaving though, that is definitely preferred!

Just a random thought -- J.J. has now used Amanda Foreman in three series - Felicity, Alias and now What About Brian.
