« What About Brian
November 20, 2006: Don't Let the Gobblers Get You Down
"Your mom was a stripper?" What a fuzzy-warm opening — a budding relationship that's in the all-smiles phase. I'm excited about Adam and Heather (aka Summer) and her theory about waiting until the fifth date to get down and dirty. Jimmy thinks this is just a rebound thing, but you can see in Adam's eyes it's definitely not. Although, I wonder if his conversation with Jimmy sparked memories of Marjorie.
In the hospital maternity ward, Brian's hair is growing on me, because it's actually done nicely.... Somebody found some mousse! "Are you high?" he asks Nicole when she says working for their father might actually be a good idea. He'd happily switch and grieve for her while she works for Dad. Oh Brian... chin up, buddy. I swear one day he'll be happy.... But we really wouldn't have a show if he found it now.
Working for Dad means having boundaries. "I'm not expecting any favors, and I won't be asking for any," Brian says. And it's straight business from here on out as Dad lays down the company rules. Welcome Bridget (Krista Allen) into the mix.... Isn't it her lucky day? She comes late to work and is assigned to mentor Brian as he learns the business. Immediate attraction. Immediate trouble. I can smell it from my couch. And suddenly, she's wiping his latte-covered mustache — although, I didn't see any milk lingering on his lip — in a clichéd flirting moment. "Stand there and look cute," she says. Is that code for "I wear the pants in this relationship-to-be"? This should be good.
Deena and Dave are trying to rotate living in their own house with the kids. I just want to hug Dave. He's so genuine. He's a good dad. He's trying. "I am not a complete nimrod," he jokes with her. That one made me laugh out loud, because he's sincere but he's still got his humor tucked underneath. And, wouldn't we just all love a day like Deena's? Massage, shopping, a hike. Good for her. Mommy has a time-out... the adult kind.
Later that night...
Adam invites Heather to his work party. "You don't have to invite me just 'cause I found your cheese," she says in that endearing, nonstripper kind of way. But I think he's a little worried about Jimmy's reaction. When Heather shows up looking more elegant than ever, Summer is nowhere in sight. "I'm a chiropractor," she tells his colleagues. But after a few drinks, Adam gives her away in an embarrassing moment. He doesn't seem to care after overhearing some of the lawyers talk about him not making partner — or at least, he assumes they're talking about him.
And Deena's struggling with who she really is outside motherhood. Her mommy time-out didn't exactly free her, but only made her think more about her children and her future life.
Dave and Brian kick back with a few beers and reminisce over old video games. I still love their interactions — they have these pacts that are always filled with pride and promise. But often come with risk... when Dave suggests some new concepts for his project at work, he seems lost in the big ocean that is his new company. And Brian returns to the house Bridget tried to sell yesterday, but with a different approach — a sentimental Brian approach (that apparently works on some women). A job well done leads to an interoffice no-no and clothes being readjusted sloppily. All I kept thinking was, "Typical. Only Brian."
It's a new day....
And Deena's back to mommyhood with trays of cupcakes taking over the kitchen. Does Mrs. Fields have some competition on her hands? I feel for her — she's confused, a little lost, she needs something for herself... just like her husband.
But Dave is doing a lot worse this morning. Something's wrong, and I'm panicking at the thought of this character falling apart. Will an illness bring them closer? Will tragedy continue to haunt the troubled group? At home with Deena, he seems OK, more clearheaded. Was it anxiety?
And in another office, Bridget seems to have gained some perspective. "As far as I'm concerned, last night never happened," she tells Brian in a Grey's Anatomy-like elevator moment. But at least he's released from under her watch when Dad finds out he's really the one who sold the house. "Hopefully, you'll feel at home here," Dad says. I loved when Brian put the pens and pencils in his mug. Unpacking his bags, finally?
I haven't been that interested in Nic's story line this week, but there's something to be said for Rosanna Arquette's scene with the grieving group. Her fears pour out, her frustrations are easier said. And we get some relief with Angelo's death, seeing Nicole really smile.
My favorite conversation of the night? Dave and Brian's bonding over their love for cupcakes. Moist, "supple" cupcakes. Who else can ooo and aaah over frosting? Those two crack me up.
But what wasn't so funny to me was Adam and Heather having a shotgun wedding. What was that about? Somehow I see a clash coming.... Will Marjorie return? Talk about a last-minute twist. I would have titled this episode, "What About Some Self-control?"

Since Brian is the one that got the lady to sell her house...does he get the commission? Seems only fair, but he probably won't. Will Bridget really split the commission she gets with him? Doubt it.
What the heck was Adam thinking? ">
Good for Nic for getting over talking to strangers. Strangers are the best people to talk about stuff...especially if they know what you are talking about.

I love this show more and more every week. Nic had a great moment in the group. I like Heather but see this ending badly. Not loving the new girl but will see. I dont think anything is wrong with Dave other than this job. He only started getting worked up when he realized the next two years of his life would be dominated by that nauesating game that he is not into at all. Id be sick too. Deena continues to puzzle me. I just dont understand her. Shes so up and down.

A job well done leads to an interoffice no-no and clothes being readjusted sloppily. All I kept thinking was, "Typical. Only Brian…"
All I kept thinking was they're going to have sex in that women's house? Ewww, and not to mention totally unprofessional. I was so glad she came back home.
I can't believe Adam married Heather. She is so obviously the rebound girl and she doesn't even care. But, she isn't the typical rebound person because it wasn't just a typical break-up. The man didn't just break up with his girlfriend, he was left at the altar. He was about to get married!
I see it ending badly too, it could only lead to disaster.
To me it seemed like Dave started to get flustered when they were asking him for specific time frames. When it was just him and Brian (before they sold the game) he probably could take all the time he wanted to get it right. Now there's a deadline for every phase of the project.
The woman at Brian's job who I'm guessing is going to be his next love interest, yeah totally not feeling her either. There's just something about her.
On a personal note...
Megan, I watch some of the other shows that you write commentary for and noticed that you have been receiving a lot of flack for your style of writing these commentaries. I personally always enjoy reading your commentaries and hope all of the negative posts don't get to you.

I don't think Dave has a medical problem, I too think that he was having an anxiety attack when he was realizing how much of his life is going to be spent on this game he has no interest in. It was a little surprising that he doesn't have any interest in it since he has little girls, and it seemed like a great game for them. Life isn't all about fast racing and crashes and monsters and such. Can't stand the realtor slut. She is so unprofessional it is pitiful. Can someone please take her shopping for a blouse that fits? She is hanging out all over. I was watching to see how many buttons were going to pop off, they were straining so bad! Poor Nic. I feel so bad for her, and worry for the health of her baby since she is putting so much stress on her body. I'm glad she has found others who understand her and will help her.

Awesome show last night. Loved all of it. Adam getting married...not sure where that's going to go. From the previews that they showed, looks as though Heather is the one to say that maybe they made a mistake.
Dave and Deena, I really like these too. Well...I like Dave more then I like Deena, but I hope that these two eventually get back together.
I'm really feeling for Nicole, being pregnant and loosing your husband, her feelings and hormones must be all over the place. I'm glad that she went to that support group and it getting help from people who know exactly how she feels.
That new girl Bridget, she looks very familiar, does anyone know who she is and what she's done? I'm kind of liking her, she and Brian look hot together.
I love the addition of Brian and Nic's Father. I laughed when he and Brian said that there was going to be no special treatment and when no one put up their hands to mentor Brian, he goes....did I tell you that Brian's last name is Davis!! LOL!!!
Too bad that we have to wait two weeks for a new one!!!

Krista Allen played "Billie Reed" on Days of Our Lives. She was the first replacement for Lisa Rinna when they brought back the character on the show.

For those of you who enjoy the show, please continue to enjoy it.
I'm done watching. I don't like the direction the show has taken and I've run out of patience.
Getting married to a woman one month after being left at the altar? I cannot even comprehend that level of stupidity on by either person let alone both of them!
Someone posted earlier that the show had some major changes at the producer or writer level over the summer and it really shows.
The show started out as a whimsical look at a single guy with married friends. That registered with me since that's what I am.
The show is so different from last year that they should have changed the title to "Days of Brian's Life" or "All My Brians".

shrikantj, I can relate. The premise of Brian being the only single friend in a bunch of couples is what initially attracted me to the show as well because that's what I am. I'm the only one of my friends that doesn't have a boyfriend or acquaintance of any kind. Not even a friend with benefits (which I totally don't want, I'm just sayin').
Now, as you pointed out and someone else that posted a comment last week (I think) none of the couples are even couples anymore. Not Deena and Dave, Adam and Marjorie, or Nic and Angelo (I remember reading something last summer but now can't remember why the producers felt as though he needed to go).
I can see how this total turnaround would turn some people off from the show and sometimes I honestly think that I only continue to watch it out of habit.

I just started watching it this season, (I stumbled across it when they put that stupid Studio 60 on, instead of Medium) so I don't know what last season was like, so it doesn't matter to me that none of the couples are couples anymore. But I can understand how you wouldn't like it now since it appears to have done a 180, and gone very astray from the original show. And I hate when new writers come in, cause the characters start to act and talk differently from their original. So, without having a previous opinion, I am enjoyting this show so far! glad I stumbled across it!

Megan, please look up the meaning of the phrase "shotgun wedding" before you use it again, k? Thx.
Brian was trying to raise money to buy back the game, which would have cost $75,000. I think it's safe to assume he isn't in debt for more than that amount. He just sold a house which he thinks can go for 6 million. Is anyone familiar with how much commission real estate agents get at this level? I assume that a chunk of what agencies charge, which if I recall correctly is in the neighborhood of 6-7%, goes to the agency, and part goes to the agent. If for the sake of argument Bridget gets only a 3% commission, and if she splits it with Brian, his 1.5% of a 6 million dollar sale will be $90,000. And he doesn't want to work here, why? Am I missing something?

I really like the show, but sometimes I just can't stand Deena. I feel like everything that went wrong in her marriage was her fault. She's the one that wanted the open marriage, she's the one that went out and slept with a guy, and then she's the one that couldn't take it when Dave did the same. It is extremely difficult for me to have any sympathy for her.

I found myself saying "this is getting stupid" quite often when watching this episode. Brian and Bridget "hooking up" -- stupid. Adam and Heather getting married -- stupid. And where the heck is Marjorie? Sarah Lancaster is still in the opening credits so I'm assuming that she will be returning at some point. For two men - Brian & Adam - so in love with Marjorie, they are both moving on quite quickly. I'm hoping that her return will bring Brian back to her.
I'm liking the Deena/Dave storyline. I didn't last season with the "open marriage" theme, but as a married woman, I can empathize with these two. I'm also interested in the Nicole story. I totally hated her last season, but maybe that's because she wasn't in it as much.
At any rate, I'm glad that I tape it so I can fast forward through the Adam scenes. He needs to go.
