« The Black Donnellys
April 2, 2007: The Only Sure Thing
It doesn’t surprise me that no one here ever has any money: There are never customers in the diner or the bar. Sean thinks a jukebox will help Jimmy’s business. Maybe the Donnellys should have more wakes at their bar. Enough people die every week to keep them in business.
Every time Jimmy (Thomas Guiry)comes on the screen I want to shout, “You’re killin’ me, Smalls!” The guy looks for trouble. He’s always lying, cheating and stealing. And he always gets away with it. Even if he has to throw a man out of a window to do it.
I was surprised at how fatherly Jimmy was with Sean. He really doesn’t want Sean to get caught up in the new family business of bookkeeping and killing sprees. Perhaps Jimmy is actually being a responsible older brother or he just feels guilty that Sean already got a nasty taste of the other end of the fist. Either way, I hope Sean stays out of trouble. He obviously doesn’t want to go back to school, but that may be the best thing for him. By the way, how old is he? I’m beginning to think he is not old enough to hang out in bars, but in their neighborhood no one cares. If he’s been out of high school for a year and a half he is most likely 20 years old. Close enough.
Jenny went head-to-head with Dokie (who’s been ax-free lately). I was happy to see her stand up for her father and the diner, but why does she always look so dull? Sure, she lives in a beat-down neighborhood, but she doesn’t have to look so homely all the time. She wears gray and black in every scene, with her arms folded and her eyes popping out. She’s a pretty girl and I know she’s the victim in most of the story lines, but she seems so boring. I don’t see the attraction Tommy has for her.
I liked the flashback with Kevin. It gave us a clear understanding of how his gambling obession began. However, I don’t know too many kids who go to the tracks alone and bet on horses. I thought that he picked the horse for his dad to bet on. Instead, it showed him at the tracks alone and then walking into his home to hear that his father had been killed. And in a previous flashback we saw that Mr. Donnelly was with Jimmy when he died. So why was a kid like Kevin gambling on his own? Furthermore, I knew Tommy was going to go with the first horse Kevin wanted. I was shocked that Tommy even made the bet, but he becomes desperate with all things Jenny. I’m glad he trusted Kevin’s first instinct.
Speaking of bets, I should have called Whitey and told him about my Kate Ferrell/Tommy prediction. The woman gave Tommy $13,000! I wish I had that kind of money lying around my house. Then she gave him a more than friendly, awkward kiss. I knew it. I’m awesome. Pay up! Now, who wants to bet me that Kate and Tommy get closer within the next two episodes? Any takers?

Casey - I have to disagree about Jenny. She still is hot, and broken which is the allure for Tommy. He longs to fix things! I found it very interesting that once he found out that the horse race money had been soiled with the blood of the guy that got pushed out the window, Tommy couldn't give it to Jenny. He wouldn't be able to look her in the eye and give it to her.
Tommy may get with Kate but it will be because of guilt not attraction. He will feel guilty because he shot her husband, stole from her, then borrowed money. Now that is a list!
I thought this was a very good episode and am looking forward to Daokey and Tommy squaring off soon!

Just read the bad news that the Donnelly's are going off the air.....what a mistake by NBC - this is a really good show and they just never gave it the chance...which is so typical. The last episode is scheduled to air in the middle of April but they aren't even going to show all of them...they'll just leave us hanging.
You suck, NBC!!

I'm still not getting the whole guilt thing. Tommy is big pimping. He borrowed money from one woman (whom he has to know has a little crush on him) to give to another woman (whom he has a crush on). What a player.
Think Tommy would've given Jenny the money he won fair and square at the off-track betting parlor had he known the guy had already been thrown out a window?

I too just read about the untimely end of TBD. How disappointing. I really enjoyed this show while it lasted. I wish NBC would put the last eps online so we could see what happened.

The episodes are getting better and better. NBC needs to give this show more time. I read it's being replaced with the silly reality show "Wedding Crashers" and may be sent to Friday nights. I sent an email to NBC via their viewer feedback on their website letting them know I'm a fan of the show and that television needs shows like TBD with well written plot-lines and a great cast. I truly feel that viewers of television in general need to start giving the networks our feedback or we'll keep ending up with shows like Wedding Crasher, Search for Pussycat Dolls and more game shows every night.

Bummer about the cancellation. I agree it's just been getting better.
Man, Jimmy drives me absolutely nuts! I want to smack him upside the head constantly. I'm glad they are giving him a bit of a heart with Sean.
I kept wondering if they were going to rob the jukebox lady like they did the paint guy. I mean they have no money, but they're going to get a fancy jukebox. Pretty soon people will lock the doors when they see the brothers coming.
Poor Kevin really has a problem. I like how they showed the flashback of why he thinks he's so lucky. That was a nice look at how something like this can get started. 'Cuz me, I'm thinkin' how can he think he's lucky when he never wins. It really was a great look at that addiction. I knew Tommy would go with his first instinct.
I also loved how Tommy told Kevin he should start believing that he is a good liar.

I'll miss the funny lines that sneak by you on this show. One of my favorites:
Tommy: I think you're going to do what I say Guy: Why is that? Tommy: Your daughter over there has a crush on Kevin Guy: So? Tommy: If you don't give us some scotch, he's going to date her. *Kevin gives mischevious smile*

I KNEW Jimmy Donnelly looked familiar. "The Sand Lot" is one of my favorite movies!
