Episode 5 Recap

After spending all that money to send 14 contestants, three trainers, a host and who even knows how many crew members all the way to Jamaica, you would think they would spend more than just half an hour showing the trip. I would have liked to see more temptations faced on vacation, but it was great to see how many options there are to work out outside of the gym, from yoga on the beach to water aerobics in the pool. And nice work to all of you who predicted a vacation would be the huge twist we've been promised for the last few weeks!

This may sound kind of mean, but I couldn't help but giggle each time Phil and Ryan fell off their rafts into the water during the challenge. I guess it's not that mean since their own teammates were laughing, too. On top of it, the Black Team dominated by just cruising on by them one by one and ultimately won the challenge.

Sadly, winning the challenge didn't help the Black Team enough and they lost the weigh-in for the very first time this season. I know the Red and Blue teams were happy to be safe for another week and that the Black Team finally got a taste of the horrible process of eliminating a teammate. Jillian's face said it all. Poor girl isn't used to losing, but it had to happen soon or later. It's really interesting to see how one week someone can only lose one pound and come back the following week with an 11-pound loss. Just goes to show everyone out there that the body works in mysterious ways and not to give up.

It's been five weeks since the show started and I'm already seeing such a difference in these contestants, especially in their faces. I actually feel like I know them all personally and am so proud to see how their hard work has been paying off.

And what kind of reality competition show would this be without a little side dish of drama? I was a little surprised to see how quickly they were able to turn against each other after coming together to win the challenge. But ultimately it came down to the biggest threat and Jim was sent home with four out of six votes. Of course, it was a bit emotional for Bill to lose his brother, especially after Allison brought up the fact that it was the twins' birthday the next day and that they've spent every birthday together since sharing a womb. But Jim did look amazing back home, after losing a total of 123 pounds since starting the show.

On a final note, I just have to say: I still miss Jerry.

This group is doing great. Keep up the good work. There are going to be some men and women who are going to have to remove some skin surgically. But, they are doing great and keep it up!!!

It was another good episode. While I think they should have kept Jim, I can't blame them for separating the twins. I thought it was a bit unfair to have two people from the same family -- but different households -- competing on the show.

Jim should be commended for losing more than 120 pounds. He did a great job!

The black team is probably going to lose next week. The women on that team are not doing a good job in losing weight, exception is Hollie for this week. If the black team loses again, it would be time for Bill to go. I think the other man on the black team doesn't like the twins much.

Well strategy wise, it was the best move for the women and the other guy. The twins, Bill & Jim, are the strongest on that team and fierce competitors. They are always putting up big numbers in the weigh-ins, so strategy involved here, it makes sense they would want them gone first. The women aren't losing as much, but they do out number the men now thanks to this vote off and they're hoping a woman wins this year, although out of the 3 women, I'm not sure who I would want to win on that team. I'm just not too impressed yet with them, maybe they'll grow on me.

I love all the trainers though. They are unique in their own ways. Bob used to be my fave, but now, I think it's a 3-way tie! LOL Thought it was hilarious when the black team tried on some of their old clothes and Jillian was about to tear up and someone was like oh, wow, she's going to cry and she's like no, I'm not, shut up! LOL She is funny!

As for the red team and blue team, if they go back up for elimination anytime soon, I look for either Phil on the red team or Neil on the blue team to go. That strategy wise is how I would do it. Phil is definitely one who competes well and he would be tough to beat. He runs fast and he can put up big numbers as well. I really like him and hope he sticks around for a while, but if the red team goes with strategy, I'm thinking that would be the best move.

So Phil is my fave right now on the red team and for the mean and I guess it's a tie between like 4 of the women for who I would want (Kae, Nicole, Julie, or Isabeau). I just can relate to Julie because I have the same thing she does (PCOS - polycystic ovarian syndrome) and anyone who has ever had this can relate that it's easy to gain the weight (even with watching every little thing you do) and harder to take it off. Thank goodness she increased her pounds off this week though. I was really excited for her.

As soon as I saw in the first ep that the Black Team had the twins, I said to myself: "Must be split up!" They'd be the immovable alliance. Yes, I thought it was a mistake to have the twins on the same team, but that's the way the initial picks went.

Interesting that next season's Biggest Loser is/was advertising for duos to audition: twins, marrieds, etc. I hope that they'll all be split up. The competition should be much keener that way.

Love this show! Especially love the "where are they now" segments. Wish the show were edited tighter without the endless repetition... and the endless dramatic music. (Is there a problem with making it a 60 minute show instead of 90 or 120?) Wish that they'd go more into the psychology of being overweight and how to get over that, as well as what exactly (and for how long) the people on the show do in the gym... and what they do when they go home. They should team up with the original Extreme Makeover on ABC to show what one of the contestants has to do to get rid of that extra skin.

BL has a great website, too. A class act all around, unlike that awful Fat March, which seemed to want to need at least one ambulance emergency in each episode just for shock effect -- heaven help them should they actually care about the people involved.

I cannot believe that Kim had no problem with her people drinking in Jamaica. They are morbidly obese people who have no self control and she gives them the OK to drink empty calories - BTW your body turns alcohol into sugar. I have lost all respect for her.

Phil annoys me - he always has that smirk on his face and the self-righteous attitude. I hope he is the next Red Team member to go.

I think it is safe to say that the Red Team water weighted last week......

The Black Team could be in trouble next week. Not sure it is good strategy to vote off one of the biggest losers this early when the women aren't losing much weight at all. But they are still my faves so GO BLACK TEAM!

I miss Jerry too and I hope he ends up being the biggest loser at home.

Carol- I am with you. Why don't they go back to the 60 minute format the show used to have? I also agree with another poster that a lot of these contestants are going to need skin removal surgery. Is it just me or are the women a lot heavier this season?

Also, just wanted to say thanks for blogging this show!

i've never cared much for kim, could be the editing but she's just so forgettable, but i really enjoyed the fact that her players absolutely kicked jillian's players' butts during weigh-in. i'm not a jillian fan, that harsh, drill seargent type of trainer has never been for me, but i just thought it was great that having a drink or two probably HELPED the red team! i believe that having a bit of fun, relaxing a bit, getting out of the game a teeny bit was what helped them. i think it made them work even harder in the workouts, etc. the black team was all about work, work, work hard, "We're not on vacation", hey, jillian, lighten up! for me anyway, the yoga of bob's and the slight leniency of kim is more beneficial to the losers and is giving them REAL LIFE experience and skills. the black team isnt gonna have jillian screaming at them all day every day, so they arent being prepared as well for the temptations they will face every hour when they get home. and they WONT keep up those hard workouts either. they'll lose the weight and end up working out closer to how bob and kim train.

i still havent found a favorite, they're all doing really well and i think that's great, but now that jerry's gone i dont find anyone else to be very interesting or a stand out.

i would also like to see what those guys look like after their skin surgery; i guess that's the downside to losing so much so quickly.

i'm loving the show this season, not really the players though. i like that allison was at the table with them sharing her own struggles. yes she didnt have 100 pounds to lose like they do, but her struggles are just as challenging. no doubt she faced the same rudeness and prejudices that the losers have faced. and being in the TV industry, i would guess that she heard MORE nasty remarks more often than the average fat person. i LOVE carolyn, but allison is a much better fit for this show.

kimba, I agree with everything you just said. (And trust me, that's really a rare thing for me to say. ;) )

Jillian annoys the bejeebers out of me. When somebody is that much of a drill sergeant with me about ANYthing, the mule in me kicks in and I stop listening. Please treat me like a grownup. It's not your failure if I screw up, it's mine. I can take responsibility for my own actions, thank you. :)

COSMO123, although Jillian is right about what alcohol consumption does to increase weight, you have to realize that after BL these people have to go back to the real world. They have to learn to make healthy choices on their own, but it's unrealistic that they are going to give up all vices completely. They just have to learn to eat/drink in moderation. Understandably, one would be tempted to drink while on vacation, which they did, in moderation. Apparently Kim's strategy (be merry tonight, for tomorrow you'll work your butts off) paid off whereas Jillian's did not.

Of course these people have to be pushed to eat right and work out, but if they're blocked completely from some of the fun stuff they're only going to return to overeating.

taesma, the mule in me kicks in with her too. jeepers woman, try some yoga or valium.

i like your point about her taking their failure on as her own, it aint about you honey.

I agree with ygstarr -- that's why Kim's philosophy worked so well. She made the workouts fun and different for the team, not the norm of Jillian just crawling through the sand and doing the same old thing they were used to. These people are going to get bored if they keep doing the same thing -- that's why some people quit exercise programs because they become routine and boring. So by doing the water aerobics, etc., Kim at least made it more enjoyable and fun for her team and it was something different. That's why Amy had such a success.

As for the alcohol thing, I agree too. Even in the BL book, it talks about you can still consume alcohol, but know the limits, in moderation, and know which drinks have the less calories if you are on a set calorie diet and be sure to add it in the calories consumed that day. Yes, it seems like a big waste of calories when you're dieting, but to each his/her own I guess.

As for the person who said about the recaps thing too, that annoys me! It comes back from break and we see a huge repeat of what just happened before the commercial. The recaps are too long too. I guess good if you missed something, but annoying if you've been watching or taped the show to watch.

I am missing Jerry too. He was the one I was mainly rooting for since the beginning when he won the race the first day! I hated to see him gone so soon, but I knew he'd be viewed as competition, so he'd be gone. I do like some of the others, but I don't think anyone stands out in my mind as much as Erik did last season and Jerry in this one, so not picking a complete fave until a little further along.

I understand what cosmo123 is saying. Because the Red Team was exempted from elimination last week, they filled up with water so they would show less of a weight loss that week and the real weight loss would go towards next weeks' numbers.

I agree with Jillian - this is a competition and Kim risked her players going home (although they would have the water loss advantage).

But then again, I'm a huge Jillian fan. It would take someone like that to drill the info into my head. Bob can be tough too (sometimes).

The product placement cracks me up. I was half expecting to see Bob look directly into the camera..."I love these Nabisco 100 calorie snack packs. I eat 3 a day to stay strong and fit."
