big valley tv show

i know that this is probably an impossible question to answer, but, does anyone know what happened to eugene barkley on the show ?? ( his character, not the actor) he was only in it the first season or so, but i dont remember how they wrote him off.

The actor who played him Charles Briles was drafted I believe that he was just away at school.
