« The Bachelor: Officer and a Gentleman

April 2, 2007: The Unveiling

Tonight we finally got to meet the new Bachelor, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Andy Baldwin, M.D. By far, he's the bachelor with the most impressive history to date, and he's certainly easy on the eyes. Aside from being a doctor, he's also a world-class triathlete and when he says he can't wait to be married and have kids, it really does seem genuine. So what can we expect to see this season? Judging from the promos, we know he'll pop the question to one lucky lady, but we can also expect a lot of drama along the way. As we witnessed tonight, the claws are already coming out and we still have a long way to go. So let's get started....

As a participant in the second season of The Bachelor (yes, it's true — I wouldn't make this up), let me start off by saying that what you don't see in this first episode is all of the chaos that goes on behind the scenes. In the days prior to meeting the Bachelor, the women are caught up in a whirlwind of activities. Interviews, photo shoots and drug tests are all part of the preparation process, and in some seasons of the show, the women weren't allowed to cross paths with one another until the first night. It's both exciting and exhausting. So when we finally see these 25 women on the night they meet the Bachelor, they've already been through an obstacle course. Which in part is probably why emotions are already at such extremes.

But enough about that.... Let's take a look at this season's participants. One thing I noticed right away is that there are a large number of women from the South. In fact, I counted six women from Texas alone, and if my math is right, Andy kept all of them! One of those women, Amber, also made it to my list of candidates who will probably make it far in this process. Amber is the fourth-grade teacher who bonded with Andy over talk of children. But it was Stephanie T. from South Carolina, who managed to claim the first rose of the night, much to the dismay of the other women, especially Lindsay. Yes, remember Lindsay? She was quick to get catty over Stephianie's rose, but her exit from the show was even quicker, when she realized she was not going to get one of her own. Judging from her words, Lindsay was pretty angry, but I think her tears proved she was more hurt than she wanted to admit.

Among the other women ousted tonight was Linda, who I sensed was on her way out the second she suggested that she doesn't always make a good impression on people, and Blakeney, who attempted to impress the Bachelor with a rap song. I guess he just wasn't that into her, or rap music.

Other keepers included Peyton, who, like Andy, was also celebrating her birthday tonight. There was also Nicole and Tiffany W., who were the masterminds behind the tequila cake this evening. As aesthetically undesirable as that cake turned out to be, Andy didn't seem to mind and I happen to think that Tiffany W. may be the last one standing this season. However, she'll still have to face the competition with the other remaining women, who include Stephanie W., Bevin, Kate, Alexis, Danielle I., Tessa, Susan, Amanda, Erin and Tina.

Erin, I'm curious, were you one of the final two women on Bachelor 2. Your name rings a bell. It's nice to have inside information. I always wondered whether the women met each other prior to getting in the limo.

I also think that Tiffany W. will make it far. My other two favorites are Bevin and Tessa. As for Lindsay, she acted really immature. I think she only tried out for the Bachelor just so she could get on T.V. But she was entertaining to watch.

Andy does seem genuine, unlike other Bachelor's and it will be interesting to see who ends up being his soulmate.

SPOILER ALERT

I also think it's interesting to watch the show knowing that Andy has gone on the record saying he's in love, he proposed on the final show, and his family loves her.

Poor Lindsay!!! I knew Lindsay would not be picked from the time she got out of the limo. She acted too 'street' plus her actions in the house during the party (laughing at the girl that fell, jumping up to fight and just talking loud and unclassy) let us know she would not be too be picked. After all, in addition to being a man he is a doctor and officer in the Navy. His wife (or girlfriend for that matter) will need to be able to interact appropriately with his peers and his superiors. If she had NOT been so loud and 'street' she may have been kept for one or two rounds as the 'token' Black girl but not the way she acted. And 'yes' I am Black so I am not being racist towards her.

Talk about drama. I have to agree with Metooch. Lindsay was to much of a "ghetto drama queen". I knew she wouldn't get picked, athough it would have been nice for her to stick around a bit to add more drama. What was that about at the end. She went off talking about the bachelor having a square head and that his teeth looked fake. But at the same token she was crying because she wasn't picked talking about that she's prettier than some of the girls. If you don't have a nice personality, that alone makes you "ugly". Anyway, I have to say that I'm rooting for Amber. I really like her. And Erin, were you on the bachelor with Aaron Buerge. I am a big fan of the bachelor series so I was just wondering which bachelor you were in. And for those of you that do follow the bachelor series, it was just announced a few weeks ago that Trista and Ryan are expecting their first child this summer.

What is with the girls wearing flat sandals with their gowns? Am I the only one to find it weird that more than one girl tried this?

Andy was in the audience of DWTS and Tom Bergeron asked him if it were true that he gets engaged at the end and he said yes.

Now, as to whether he'll stay engaged and actually marry the woman is another question.

I found this on IMDB regarding Erin: "The Bachelor" (2002) TV Series .... Herself (eliminated round 2) (unknown episodes)

Who was The Bachelor when you were on the show?

Amber was my favorite as well.

I can't imagine that Lindsay was the only one they could find to be the token black woman on the show. She was just downright embarrasing to me. I wonder why they cast her.

The 2nd season bachelor was Aaron. He seemed like a jerk anyway.

Did anyone else noticed that bug-eyed girl Linda/attorney? She reminded me of the "runaway bride."

I think he made some decent choices. Thank God the producers let him get rid of Lindsey. I thought they would have kept her a little longer for the drama.

Thanks. Yes, Erin is better off not having gone further with Aaron.

I noticed too that some of the girls were wearing flats. I even laughed and told my husband that she was wearing flip flops with an evening gown. I couldn't figure that out!

I think that he did make some great choices, girls that he clicked with and had decent conversations with. I'm so glad that Lindsay is gone, she acted like a spoiled brat. I thought for sure that CBS was going to make Andy keep her around for drama. I guess we'll find out soon enough who our token drama queen will be. Every Bachelor has one.

Looks like a good season!!

i saw the flipflops too. i wonder how short the bachelor is??? because most of the flipflop girls were at eye level with him. if they had worn heels, they would have towered over him.

I think the drama is going to come from the one that had on the too short dress. What was that!!!!!!!!????????? If I am correct it said she owned a boutique!!!

I am always amazed at shows like The Bachelor how these women (and men on their shows) will make a fool of themselves to try to impress the person doing the selecting.

Well at least in order to watch The Bachelor we don't have to 'vote'.

Flip flops are unacceptable. What happened? Did they get out there and find out the bachelor is 5'8" and they had no dress flats?

He is stationed in Hawaii. You can read his bio at http://abc.go.com/primetime/bachelor/index?pn=bio&g=9723&name=andybaldwin. He sounds fantastic!
