View the Possibilities: The Next Rosie
Rosie O'Donnell by Stephen Lovekin/WireImage.com
After this year's dramatic turn on The View, with Rosie O'Donnell leading the discussions and picking fights with certain real-estate moguls, she's opting out of next year's contract. I think it's a wise decision. Although Rosie helped View ratings, got the audience stirred up and made the top of video lists and news items, I wasn't settling into her presence on the ABC morning program as well as I have with Meredith Vieira's new gig at Today. So, who would be a better choice for The View? Who would really complement the other ladies and still argue with Elisabeth Hasselbeck? Who could nestle into the comfort (and sometimes uncomfortable) zone of Hot Topics and later avoid public announcements from Barbara Walters trying to smooth over any rumors?
Let us ponder the possibilities....
Paula Abdul is definitely not an option. Ellen DeGeneres would be hilarious mixed with Joy Behar, but we'll let her keep her own show, which commands a funny, friendly and entertaining vibe all in one.
More seriously, though, how about NBC's Campbell Brown? A fan of hers for a while now, I don't think she's utilized enough on Today and could bring a dignity and warmth to the View table. Or skewing toward a younger audience, there's Vanessa Minnillo, who just announced she will not be returning to MTV's TRL after her contract is up. Can she weigh in on worldly issues after being sucked into the Hollywood bubble for so long? Things could get interesting the next time Jessica Simpson drops by to promote a movie (although let's hope she puts out an album instead).
Shout out some ideas below. Is there anyone you think would best fit the mold and breathe new life into the spotlight position Rosie's leaving behind?

How about Shannon Doherty? She is controversial, and when she co-hosted recently, she was very open and opinionated. Rosie even said she was glad Shannon was there so she didn't have to make all the remarks people would not like.

I would like to see Queen Latifah fill the empty chair. I think she is strong and very dynamic. She would bring an entirely different point of view to the show.

Rosie's leaving? THANK GOD!!! I had stopped watching when her big mouth got in the way of actual entertainment. I really couldn't care less about her kids and the problems she sees with virtually all media and celebrities. If she really wants a nicer America, she can SHUT UP!

I couldn't watch The View before Rosie got there. I tried and found it to be nonsensical blathering about unimportant subjects. Even when I disagreed with Rosie, and I did, I found her intelligence and passionate belief in what she said refreshing. I am sick to death of spin doctors and the politically correct hogwash. I will watch the show if they get someone good on there - but if it goes back to what it was - I'm a goner again.
I might like Janeane Garafolo. I can't think of another woman and a man would be wrong - IMO.

You mean Joy Behar, not Bauer.
It was nice that The View had been talking about more serious topics, like it did when it first went on the air 10 years ago, but I found that Rosie and the other co-hosts often got their facts wrong or confused and in the middle of something important their attention would get diverted by something inane and they would run with it. And while The View is clearly not meant as a public affairs show, it would be really nice if they didn't add to the general noise by getting information wrong.
Who should take Rosie's place depends on what ABC and Barbara Walters want The View to be. Do they want it to continue to be this mix of topical controversial discussion and fluff, do they want to go back to discussing nothing as they did during the couple of years prior to Rosie, or are they going to look this as an opportunity to reinvent the show again? Trying to get someone who will be Rosie next year is clearly a mistake because there is no such person. So ABC will have to be careful to get someone who a voice of her own, is intelligent and articulate, and who will be able to moderate the show. Given how much Rosie has improved the ratings, I think they are going to stumble and try to get someone too much like her. That will fail.

I think Whoppie Goldberg would make a good cohost. She is funny, intelligent and opiononated. She has doen well as a guest cohost and as guest. I think she could stir things up.

(Loved and didn't expect the Campbell Brown thing and they should probably go with that but...) I'm actually a fan of Megan Mullally. She probably isn't everyone's cup of tea but I found some of her interviews on her own departed show to be cute and fun. She and Bradley Whitford were a riot.
I don't think they'll go with Vanessa. Nobody cares about her opinion on anything, she's certainly not funny enough to make up for that, and she's not the right age. Heaven help us if she got the job.
Whoopi was a fun suggestion by nyjoey77. She's older in years but still cool and young in spirit, doesn't look her age, is liberal but realistic. Funny. She brings back the minority element but not like 'hey we're looking for a minority.' She's a top notch personality. She probably has a lot to do though, not sure if she'd have time but I'd say toss up with Whoopi, Campbell, then Megan.

Yeah, let's hope she puts out nothing! Her singing sounds like a whining baby and a cat in pain. Everytime I heard her sing, I just wanted to puncture my eardrums.
I'm going to miss Vanessa. But at least Damien is still around.
