May 9, 2007: "And Then There Were Three..."

Thanks to a little bit of magic known as the TV webcast, and a tall guy going by "JK", I was able to watch Idol in L.A. at the N.Y. time, while the show was being taped live back in L.A. (Crazy, I know!) So, I’ve got the goods for you tonight earlier rather than later. See, I’ve got a gig to get to, so on with the show.

After sitting through an hour of just about nothing — seriously, we’re winding down here and there’s only so much filler a girl can take — here’s all you really need to know. (Besides, if you watched the show, you really don’t want me to recap all that. And if you didn’t watch the show, you’ll thank me for not having to live through every stretched-out moment.)

Barry Gibb sang live; his voice was as falsetto-y as ever. Pink sang, though not live, and she was pretty good. She’s grown on me since I saw her last year at the TV Guide Emmy party. She pretty much brought the house down there, and I had only really known one of her songs — that party song, something about getting it started. And well, it wasn’t all that and a bag of chips, as the kids say. But I really liked this performance.

LaKisha looked miserable from the get-go, though in her defense, she really tried to sound perky in her interactions with Ryan. Blake wasn’t sure if he should just go with the flow and be happy, or crawl down into his beatboxing soul and hide his head. Melinda and Jordin looked pretty darn confident, as well they should.

The medley of Bee Gees songs was almost bearable until they got to “Islands in the Stream,” a song I never thought I’d have to hear again. Images of Kenny and Dolly twangin’ it were conjured, and not in a good way, and I really like Dolly Parton. I can wholeheartedly admit that the kids did sound really good singing together — just wished they had chosen better songs.

Audience participants included the lovely Jessica Alba, her costars from Fantastic Four, Bill Maher and Simon's girlfriend, Terri Seymour. What? Rewind. Now there’s a face I never thought I’d see in that crowd — Bill's not Terri's!

Let’s get on with it, drumroll, please….

Ryan sent Jordin to the safety of the chairs very quickly, then lingered over another 15 minutes of show before announcing that Doolittle was safe, and even Blake was safe. By my uncanny sense of deduction, that left us with only LaKisha to finally nod our heads to. She sang “Stayin’ Alive” as her final Idol outro, and she sang it just as well as the night before. She will be staying alive in the music business, because with a voice that big and powerful, any record company would be proud to have her.

I look forward to these last two weeks when we really get down to the nitty-gritty. Blake has a lot of supporters out there, and Jordin is pegged to win, but Melinda has been rock-solid for most of the competition. Even her bad days were better than most.

Hope you enjoyed my spiffy shortened version of Idol. When the results are in, what else is there, really? Have a great week. Now, I’ve got to go get my “rock” on.

The contestants actually sounded pretty good singing together tonight. Probably because there are so few left, and the songs were from a group, not a solo. I wonder if they pick the songs for the medley after the contestants choose their songs, because some of the songs from the medley would have served the contestants better than what they actually sang. I also was surprised that Barry sang a song that one of the four sang the night before. Doesn't he have like a bagillion other songs he could have sang? I kept hoping they'd send out Sanjaya to sing I Started A Joke, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.
I did notice, however, that little Miss Alba wasn't around when Lakiki sang her swan song. The other three FF were there. And how miffed were those other guys to be called by their character names yet Jessica was given respect by being addressed as herself, and then given the mic to ramble on and on? I bet that will make for fun on the set if there is another sequel. Anyway, Lakiki's time was up, and it will be very interesting to see who goes next week. Will it be Melinda and Jordin, Melinda and Blake, or Jordin and Blake in the finals? Will the theme be one they choose and one the judges choose? Is that this week? It'll be interesting. ~ÐL

This Top Three is crazy... in a good way, I think. I honestly don't know who I want to win!

Bill Maher being there was a shock. This seems like a show he would mock. That was unsettling. Ryan can be funny when he's being sarcastic. He was full on mode again tonight. I loved his snarky comment after the final 4 commercial. That just cracked me up for some reason.

Pink sounded good. Barry Gibb was decent. I frankly didn't like the group sing. I think the microphones weren't working at first or my TV was on the fritz.

Lakisha going home wasn't a shock. I don't think I've been shocked for a while now. I do look forward to Blake going home next week. I think I want him to go home more for the defensive fans of his than his actual singing. Jordin is going to sail into the finale with no problems. I do worry about Melinda. Melinda just has to step up her game next week and let Blake hang himself with his arrangements and beatboxing.

For some reason my computer wouldn't let me watch the show (claimed the audio wasn't hooked up or something like that) so I worked on the computer while listening to the tv in the bg. I would have loved to see Bill Maher in the audience. I think I remember him talking about the show on Politicially Incorrect, but he doesn't seem like the type to watch.

I didnt know that Barry wrote "Islands in the Stream", I would of never of thought that. I wanted someone or him to sing "How deep is your love?" That is one of my favorite songs. And it will be the song that I will have at my wedding. Back to Barry, I thought he didnt sound all that great tonight. Or was that just me.

Did anybody notice in the commerical that nobody was driving? Jordin and Kiki were in the back seat, Melinda was in the passanger seat while she was stearing the wheel. And Blake was running to get into the backseat. I had to rewind that twice to see that. Unless the commercial was supposed to take place in London.

Anyway, for next weeks episode they sing 3 songs. And if my memory serves me correct Clive Davis will be the guest judge. All 3 judges will pick a song for a contestant, and Clive will pick a song for the contestants to sing as well. Blake better listen to Randy and not beat box in every song next week. If he knows whats good for him. If he does do that....Im going to scream my head off.

I'll be right there screaming with you! We know he's unique by now, but c'mon, we don't need to be reminded of it in every song!! When he just sings, he sounds really good and he should go with that! I really love Jordin though and I really hope she breezes into the finale like someone said! I like Melinda too because she has been consistently good, but I can see me buying a CD by Jordin before I would Melinda. Either way though, I think any, if not all, of the top 4 will be getting some kind of deals. They are all great and diverse.

Pink was awful. Simply awful. It was the song not her voice. Dreadful.

Gibb was awful. Simply awful. It was his voice not the song. Dreadful.

Well, it was obvious from the get-go who would get the heave-ho.

Wish I didn't Sookie through so much. I missed Bill Maher.

I'm happy that Blake will be back next week, but if it's true they are singing 3 songs each, yeah...Blake ought to keep the BB under wraps a little. Maybe BB one song and do the other two without.
Melinda and Jordan....That's the burning question...will they both be in the finale? I would normally think they should be, but as the show has progressed from week to week, I think I can see some of the contrivance the producers have wrangled. In the early weeks, I was certain the last top five contestants would all be women. But, in the last few years (not always, but I think the last three certainly), the last two contestants are always a man and a woman, which makes me think Blake WILL be one of the top two. Truthfully, as much as I like Blake, and he is one whose music I will buy, I think that Melinda and Jordan ought to be the top two contestants. I mean, we know he will have a record deal; so it won't really be a loss if he doesn't take the top prize. However, with the top three as good as they are, and I think all of them are GREAT, I will still be very happy to see Blake in the top two, should that be the scenario.
Hmm...rambling just a bit here. Guess the reality with me is, I like all three contestants, and I won't be hurt if any of them win the top prize.

I was happy to see LaKisha go. My favorites are Blake and Jordin. I really really think next week something is going to happen and Melinda is going to go. I personally find her boring and the same each week (she has a great voice)...but I alway "TiVo" through her!!!!

What I noticed on the previous American Idols is that when someone gets kicked off, all their voters go to someone sorta the same. Since since Chris got voted off, his voters may be now voting for Blake or even Jordin, so they are getting more votes than before. There could be a possibility that now since LaKisha is gone, her loyal voters may be now voting for Jordin thinking Melinda is too safe...and look...Melinda COULD be gone!

And...I always like to think "who's CD would I buy and want to jam in my car?" I would NEVER buy a Melinda CD...it would be worse than a Taylor Hicks CD...or worse- a Rueben Studdard CD...now Chris Daughtry...that is some fine car jamming!

The Ford commerical reminded me of "Hard Days Night". No, I am not that old, but I have this movie on VHS (I know, I should go and buy it on DVD.) So, maybe that what the commerical was trying to convey when no one was driving. The finals are not always a male and female. Kelly and Justin was; Carrie and Bo was, Taylor and Kat was, but Ruben and Clay and Fanastia and Diana were not. I see, Melinda and Jordin in the finals. I like Blake, but I feel Melinda and Jordin are the better singers. And remember, you don't have to win, American Idol, to get a record deal. Look at Chris, who finished fourth last year, you rock Chris!

I watch with the close captioning on (a habit I got into after dating someone who is deaf) and I laughed b/c the cc could only make out out one or two phrases of Pink's song - why was she mumbling -ENUNCIATE, please. Again, a shame when th AI's can outsing their established guests and mentors. I will exclude Barry Gibb from this, though. He may not be a soloist, but you can't deny his songwriting.
