The management of The CW, in deciding which shows to bring from The WB and UPN, couldn't ignore the solid ratings that "7th Heaven" brought in every week. This show averaged more than 5 million viewers weekly, and that fact, coupled with ratings of more than 7 million for the then "finale" convinced The CW management that this fall's lineup needed this solid performer to launch the new network.
The show was originally announced for 13 episodes. Within the past couple of weeks, Michael Ausiello has reported that the number of episodes has been punched up to 22.
The renewal enraged many of the viewers of shows that were not brought back because they felt their shows were better.
"7th Heaven" fans are, for the most part, thrilled about the last-minute reprieve and looking forward to Season 11.

I too am confused...what's the deal? I know I watched the series finale and today I hear the season premiere is on. How come there were no reports the show was returning? Here I am away from home and no way to set my vcr.

Fran,
The season Finale got such high ratings, so they decided to resign and do another season.

You might check out Michael Ausiello's interview with Stephen Collins from the CW launch party. Stephen does a really good job of explaining what happened.
Tonight's episode was reasonably good - very low key. I hope they pick the pace up going forward.
I've posted a summary to the Fans of 7th Heaven group if anyone is interested. I didn't go a lot into detail - pretty high level. But it beats nothing if you didn't it taped!
I'm not sure why it wasn't more heavily publicized. The WB never did a good job of publicizing it, either, and it was that network's highest rated show for years.

This show has caused a lot of controversy this summer by being renewed. I'm surprised you hadn't heard about it's renewal sooner than the day of its premiere. Hopefully you'll tune in for the full season of 7th Heaven!

Just to add, when the CW decided to resurrect 7th Heaven for another season, there were some stipulations though. All cast and crew had to agree to take a big pay cut and they only ordered 13 episodes, not a full season. All the main actors agreed to the pay cut except for David Gallagher (Simon) and Mackenzie Rosman (Ruthie) and that is why they are not on the show any longer. Although I read in a post on this thread, posted September 22nd, 4 days after the 11th season premiered, that the CW has increased the order from 13 episodes to a full season of 22 episodes. I just read an article on this site yesterday, that so far the show is not doing well and has dropped significantly in the ratings. Here is the excerpt from the article regarding 7th Heaven:
The shocker this season has been how underwhelming the numbers for 7th Heaven have been. Which makes me think last season’s strong showing was in part due to the much-publicized fact that it was the final season, heightening interest in the Camden clan. Once the CW reversed the WB’s call and resurrected the show, it seems a percentage of the fan base has decided to move on. (Can’t blame them.) I’m already getting e-mails from Heaven fans complaining that this move puts the show up against another family favorite, ABC’s blockbuster Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Tough luck, Camdens. Perhaps you should have thought about retiring gracefully.

I really hope they change their mind about cancelling the show or bring the characters back in a new show centered around Kevin and Lucy. My daughter and I have watched this faithfully for all 11 years. We did give up Extreme Makeover to watch 7th Heaven. Please don't end!!!
