Episode Recap: "Tiny Machines"

Let’s take stock of where we stand going into the season (series?) finale: Tom, Meghan and Diana are no longer pretending that Tom is really Tom, and in order to save him, Diana may have killed him. Kyle distrusts Cassie more than ever now that pretty much everyone she’s told him to trust has betrayed him. Shawn and Danny’s mother could be dying, and Collier is possibly Marked. Think they could have packed any more in?

The Baldwin/Farrell clan really can’t catch any breaks, can they? On the upside, Shawn, Kyle and Danny are now all Promicin-positive with few ill effects. On the downside, it looks like Mrs. Farrell may be dying from the shot and Tom is lying in the back room of a home-goods store with two bullets in him courtesy of Diana. Isabelle needs to extract herself from that extended family posthaste.

On the whole, the episode really was one of those good-news/bad-news kinds of nights. We got Curtis Peck back (good), then Tom killed him (bad). We can kill off the nanites that apparently hold Tom’s marked personality with high doses of radiation (good), but the process will probably kill the host (bad). Collier won’t be hell-bent on killing off those who can’t process Promicin, but he’ll probably be hell-bent on killing those who can. You see where I’m going with this.

And what was going on with Collier at the end there? I thought the Marked could just inject the nanites with the shot — I wasn’t aware radical surgery involving tubes and gauze was involved. For the first time, we saw Collier looking genuinely scared at the prospect of becoming one of the Marked and using his powers for something he considers evil. I wonder whether this personality will actually take, though, considering his powers.

It was hard not to feel for Isabelle, whose heart was quite obviously not into the whole betraying yet another Baldwin/Farrell boyfriend (especially the one that she actually loves). She has her powers back, but this time she seems to have a moral compass, and knows that helping the Marked abduct Jordan was wrong; at the same time, with all of her powers, she could probably have just run away and managed to avoid detection. But maybe I’m just being overly judgmental, because Tom did tell her that she only had 24 hours to accomplish her task, which could have meant that he had some way to kill her otherwise.

If you’re interested in a few teasers (that aren’t particularly spoilery) about the finale, check out what producer Ira Steven Behr shared with TV Guide. In any case, I’ll see you all back here next week to discuss what could quite possibly be the end of the series.

IIRC, when Faux-Tom gave Isabelle her abilities back, he also told her there was a self-destruct, for lack of a better term, in her if she ever went against them. I think that's why she followed through with her orders.

I can't add much as I agree with most all of what you said. I would just add that now the head-lady who is also marked, if they do the extraction with Tom, and this works, will they do the same to her?

Dianaa nd Meghan you fools! ou should have tasered Tom the second he walked into that hotel room! "Let's talk to the dangerous guy while he gets close enough to hit me." And how did Diana's dart gun turn into a 9mm during the chase? She could have tranqed him instead of putting two bullets in his gut.

I loved how Tess recruited "volunteers" in Promise City - using Jordan's mutant corps against him.

Also nice how they're being consistent -Maia's diary has no recorded visions for the first time ever. I'm sure glad there is another episode next week - this would have been one massive cliff to keep hanging on until USA decides to start the next season.

I think Collier is the first promicin positive person to be marked, I'm thinking that's the reason for the procedure.

Could this really be the series finale?? I had no idea. This has definitely been the strongest season since the first, and I can't wait to see where it all leads.

I probably missed some clues along the way but was Collier's description of the future the most detailed account we've had since the season started?? It wasn't much but it really peaked my interest.

No, this wasn't the finale - there is an episode next week, but USA hasn't committed to another season yet. Maybe if they don't pick it up SciFi can put it on in place of that dreadful Flash Gordon.

One iither note on the review: Mrs Farrell isn't "dying from the shot" - she's dying from Danny's "ability". He's the Anti-Shawn.

While I agree it's probably Dany's ability killing his mother, he's not the "Anti-Shawn". Shawn has the ability to drain life as well.

Just a question regarding Jordan's procedure ... didn't Tom Baldwin also have surgery when he was in the psychiatric ward? I don't think they actually showed it, but they did show them "knocking him out" with some chemical. So maybe it's a procedure rather than just a shot. Besides, it does leave a scar/mole behind the ear.

On another note, you just knew Danny's power was not going to be good.

I would be sad if this is the series finale.

I just have to say that I take back my agreement with the assessment last week about Cassie possibly being on the side of the mark. Based off the latest episode, Cassie seems to me like she's just bent on whatever gives Kyle the most power/control, thereby giving her the most power/control since Kyle continues to do whatever she tells him to.

I know after that preview for next week's final they made it seem like it was a series finale. The executive producer said though since there's been no word yet on a series renewal, that he'll deliver an hour "that could end the series or leave us with great stories for the future." So, it may seem like a series finale for the show . I hope USA renews it....what else can they play on Sunday nights? I really wish they weren't doing the typhoid Mary thing again. It just reminds us that some abilities are helpful and some aren't. Too bad there is no way to determine if your ability will be harmful to others or not.

I agree, I think that's it as well.

He's the Anti-Shawn.

But I don't think that's exactly right. I think his ability is that he kills, how I'm not sure (touch? proimity?), anyone who would die if they were to take the shot. Basically I think his ability does the same thing the Promicin test would tell you only with his ability if you fail you die.

Stop reading if you don't watch previews. Based on the previews for next week I think they will attempt to use Shawn's ability to save Tom after curing him.

I didn't realize how much of a sci-fi geek I was until they started talking about tiny machines flowing through his blood stream - and the first thing I thought was "oh they must use Nanite technlogy." Urgh!! I've got to get a life.

But I LOVE this show!! and hope that it is not the series finale as my summers will be ruined. As Brooklyn Kat said What else are they gonna put on Sunday nights that is better than this? The show might have a better chance if it came on more often then every summer. But then again, I can't fault it because it never has repeats like all the other year long shows do.

If ya'll will remember, the fake Tom has been threatening her father - telling her that his life in prison will be harder or he could be killed if she doesn't do the Marked's bidding. I agree that this time, she really does have a moral compass and I would like her turning on the Marked and not suffering any consequences - just an idle threat from the fake Tom.

And I sure have enjoyed this series. I really hope it will be back next year.

If the next episode IS the series finale, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - fans of the show - let's all work to get it resurrected on Sci-Fi!

It would be a definite improvement on those stupid made-for-TV movies like "Megasnake" that they have been doing lately, and it would help make up for the loss of "Stargate SG1"!
