Firefly on Blu-ray Disc, Courtesy of Fox Home Ent.
Right at this moment we're nearing the end of a mini TV shows on Blu-ray "drought". Did you realize there even WAS one? Oh, yeah: the January 29th release of Damages marks the last time a TV season set came out on the high definition Blu-ray Disc format.

But if you own a Blu-ray player, then never fear! The dry spell is over in just a few weeks, when Lionsgate releases Weeds - Season 3 on June 3rd. And other titles are on the way, too, including the just-announced 3rd Season of Prison Break, arriving day-and-date with the DVD version on August 26.

There's much more, too. Among the upcoming titles are July 1st's Mad Men from Lionsgate, BBC Video's July 29th release of Robin Hood, and MGM's direct-to-video return of Stargate SG-1, titled "Continuum," on the same date. August 26th sees the first *TWO* seasons of Heroes on BD and, just a week prior to that, the first season of the Cartoon Network's Justice League comes to stores. The fourth seasons of both Grey's Anatomy and Lost have been announced for later in the year, and we're even gonna get Joss Whedon's fabulous Firefly on Blu-ray Disc before the year is over, too!

What else will we get in Blu? It's a cinch that we'll see more TV shows come to the hi-def format, including additional seasons of programs already out on Blu-ray like Smallville and Masters of Horror. We also ought to see more titles, like Heroes which had previously been available on the recently discontinued HD DVD format. The original Star Trek series and the modern version of Battlestar Galactica both come to mind.

And we know that more TV-on-BD titles are going to be produced sooner or later, right? So TV Guide wants you to weigh in right now: which shows do YOU think are deserving of the hi-def disc release? Should Chuck get the mission? Or would you prefer to see the C.S.I. shows, especially C.S.I. Miami's "candy" shots, on Blu-ray? Would you be interested in adding classic programs, such as The Twilight Zone or The Dick Van Dyke Show, to your hi-def collection? Or do more modern shows give you Big Love for Blu-ray? Maybe the format should simply be Pushing Daisies? Let us know!

Even if you don't own a Blu-ray Disc player just yet, go ahead and tell us which shows presented in the format - with ultra-crisp video and ultra-clear audio - would make you want to upgrade your equipment...assuming the price was right on the hardware, of course.

Which programs deserve the chance to get presented in your home with 1080p goodness, and why? We're very interested to hear what you think!

OK, so since we had so much fun last week with everyone’s DVD wish lists, (and where the hell is thirtysomething, anyway?!) I figured why not give ya’ll a chance to weigh in with more opinions. Obviously everyone here loves TV, so let’s keep the dialogue going folks. This week? Bitches.

And I mean that in a good way, not in the nasty rap way. Because most of my favorite shows feature a woman who gives as good as she takes, has no problem firing a boardroom full of suits with the toss of her fur stole, and never, ever leaves home without a victim in mind. How can you not love these women?!

Beverly Hills, 90210 — The Complete Fourth Season came out last month and I devoured this set like Mama Cass at the sandwich shop. Not only is it the gang’s first year in college, but it marks Brenda's move to the Dark Side (following my all-time-favorite Brenda moment ever in Season 3, when La Walsh loses it on Kelly and Dylan for their summer affair: “Look, I hate you both. Never talk to me again!”) From that point on, we knew Brenda was not long for the ol' zip code. [Thanks to Sharipep for the fact-checking!]
Buy 90210 on Amazon.com

Melrose Place — Obviously, these two go hand-in-well-manicured-hand and any look at TV’s best bad girls would be remiss without a nod to Heather Locklear’s Amanda. However, the Complete Fourth Season is really the showcase for Marcia Cross’ demented Kimberly Shaw. Hell, the first episode of the set is the "Melrose Goes Boom" extravaganza. And I have watched it over and over again, just to see Alison blown up. The season also gives us a great male meanie in Patrick Muldoon’s nasty fashion maven Richard Hart. But really, it’s all about crazy Kimberly.

Bionic Woman — Last fall’s much-heralded reboot of my beloved childhood fave was disappointing to some, but I still think it had a chance to kick-ass with the right tweaks. Sadly, we’ll never know. Still, how frakkin great was Battlestar’s Katee Sackhoff as the original model, Sarah Corvus?

24 — OK, so later this month, 20th Century Fox is dropping this nifty Special Edition version of season 1, with an intro by Kiefer and a whole bunch of killer extras (alternate ending, people!). Anyway, because this is one of those shows a lot of folks have caught up with on DVD, I will not be SpoilerGuy and give anything away, but just keep your eye on Sarah Clarke’s Nina and Penny Johnson’s Sherry Palmer. That’s all I’ma say.

Laverne & Shirley — I’m sorry, but Big Rosie Greenbaum? You can’t beat that shizz. Or is that Shotz?

Nip/Tuck — Oh Kimber. There is so much to say about this angel-faced knockout. She’s a tramp. An opportunist. A druggie. A porn star with a heart of mold. She’s awesome. Every scene Kelly Carlson pours herself into spikes with fever. You never know what’s up her sleeve (or who’s been down her pants) and she’s joyfully ruined the lives of Christian, Sean and Matt by using sex as a weapon and a way of getting what she wants. This is a character who could only exist on cable. And in my old high school.

Aiight, folks. Now it’s your turn. Give me the deets on your favorite TV beyotches and why they are so lovably hateful!

Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh likes sticking her nose where it doesn't belong, and her obsession with solving murders takes her out of the lab and onto the streets. She often butts heads with police, and she steps on toes to recover evidence and solve cases, but there's always been one case that she's been unable to solve - the murder of her mother. All 23 episodes, presented in widescreen, are available on this 5-disc set. Special features include audio commentaries with Creator Tim Kring, Producer/Director Allan Arkush and composers Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin; deleted scenes and interviews with the producers and cast members (4 separate interviews). — Gord Lacey

Two Guys and a Girl by Deborah Feingold/Fox
With this week’s long-awaited release of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles’ third and final set (which is completely excellent, by the way), I couldn’t help but mourn the shows that haven’t been so lucky. You know, the ones that have yet to make it on to the market. And since the last time I ran down the sets of my dreams, both Fastlane and Birds of Prey have been announced, so why not throw a few more titles out there to see if the DVD gods are listening.

Falcon Crest
— Come on! Dallas, Dynasty and Knots Landing are out there, why not this juicy lil’ vineyard sudser? Not only did it have one of the best theme songs, but there have been few leading bitches as regal as Jane Wyman’s Angela Channing. Plus, Lorenzo Lamas’ playboy himbo was named Lance Cumson. You can not beat that! If you want to have some real fun, YouTube the show and check out the opening-credits compilation videos. The nine-season evolution of Susan Sullivan’s hair-flip, head-turn move gives me life.
If you loved Falcon Crest, check out Dallas on Amazon.com

The Class of ’96
— At the height of 90210 mania, Fox got a little young-ensemble crazy and came up with this uber-sensitive tale of freshman at a cozy New England college. And I loved it. Tragically, it starred notorious show killer Jason Gedrick, so even with the talents of the Neve Campbell-ish Lisa Dean Ryan and Megan Ward (who is kicking ass on General Hospital as we speak), few of us were shocked when Class was dismissed after 17 episodes. Sad, sure, but not shocked.
If you loved Class of ’96, check out Beverly Hills, 90210 on Amazon.com

Wonderbug — This is for my oldest brother. A few episodes are available on the Saturday Morning with Sid & Marty Krofft set, but if I could get a complete series collection of this wack-job show about a talking dune buggy and his dirty hippy owners, life would be golden. And with Land of the Lost being turned into a Will Ferrell showpiece, the timing for a release like this couldn’t be better.
If you loved Wonderbug, check out H.R. Pufnstuf on Amazon.com

Relativity — Another uber-sensitive drama from the mid-’90s that ironically also died after 17 episodes, this one told the love story of a nice Jewish boy with awesome bone structure and a needy girl who couldn’t get rid of her ex-fiancé. How uber-sensitive? Well, it was created by Friday Night Lights’ guru Jason Katims and produced by the thirtysomething guys, so it had that mix of angst and humor so few shows can balance these days. I did ask Katims once if we would ever see this on DVD and even he was excited at the idea, so let’s keep those digits crosses, people.
If you loved Relativity, check out Once & Again on Amazon.com

Two Guys and a Girl — So much better after they ditched the “And a Pizza Place” from the title in season three, ABC’s Boston-set sitcom probably has more charm now than it did during its four-year run from 1998 to 2001. Ad I’ll give you three reasons why: a young Ryan Reynolds; a young Nathan Fillion; and the totally underrated Richard Ruccolo. Oh and Traylor Howard was cute, but really, all the good female laughs went to Suzanne Cryer as Reynold’s med-school nemesis.
If you loved Two Guys and a Girl, check out Friends on Amazon.com

TV 101
— There is so little I remember about this one, but I swear, it was good, because whenever I hear anything with the “101” suffix, I think “ohh, I miss that show.” Yet even now, when I mention it to people my age, they have no memory of CBS’s late ’80s teen-ish drama about a high-school journalism class putting together a news program. Maybe that’s because it only ran for 13 episodes, but you’d think something that starred Matt LeBlanc and Teri Polo would be able to stir up some interest, right?
If you loved TV 101, check out Degrassi: The Next Generation on Amazon.com

OK, so that’s me for this week. What shows are you dying to see make it to DVD? Come on, don’t be shy. Who knows, maybe one of your faves will get lucky. Let me know!

Long before Melissa Joan Hart stepped into the role of "Sabrina" on ABC, Sabrina was the star of her own animated series in the 70s. Read More Studios Support Digital Copy: PCs, iPods/Macs, even PSPs!
FG-DC.jpg
Family Guy Digital Copy courtesy of Fox Home Entertainment
A few months ago we took a hands-on look at Digital Copy with Family Guy - Blue Harvest. The show's Star Wars parody came to DVD with an extra disc containing a digital file version of the feature which easily copied to a Video iPod, a PC, or a PC-file compatible device (like an Archos media player). It's a handy way to get a "portable" copy of the DVD you've bought, so you don't have to buy it all over again via download to the hard drive of your laptop or a portable video device. But what else is on the way for Digital Copy?

· Fox has the biggest support for on-disc Digital Copy so far, but Family Guy was actually their second. Last November's 2-DVD version of Live Free or Die Hard was first. The Blu-ray version didn't have it, though, and it didn't support iPod copies yet either (leaving iPod users AND Macintosh users out in the cold). But this would quickly and easily transfer a nice-looking copy of the film's unrated cut to a PC or compatible device.

· Fox then expanded to include iPod/Mac support with Family Guy - Blue Harvest. With their next title, Hitman, Fox not only included a Digital Copy on a DVD-ROM disc with the Special Edition (SE) DVD release, but with the Blu-ray release, too. And earlier this month, Fox continued with two more: Juno and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. Each had a Digital Copy version included with their SE DVDs and their Blu-ray releases. Fox's next Digital Copy is going to be on the Jumper SE DVD and Blu-ray, due June 10th.

· If any studio has been supporting the idea longer than Fox, it's Warner, but in a limited fashion, getting there a different way. Warner started about a year earlier, but by requiring you to download an "e-copy" of the film. Even ickier, you could only qualify for that by purchasing the DVD at a participating retailer (Wal-mart for some titles, Target for others). Participating movies were Superman Returns, Blood Diamond, 300, Ocean's Thirteen and, earlier this year, the direct-to-video animated Justice League: The New Frontier. Customers didn't care much for this method.

· Last December, Warner switched gears and started including Digital Copy versions on selected titles. The first was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and a little over a month ago they bowed their second Digital Copy title with Will Smith's I Am Legend. No word yet on what's next. Note that these were only made available with certain DVD versions; if you bought those films on Blu-ray Disc (like myself) you didn't get the Digital Copy. And Warner only has PC file support.

· Sony debuts their first titles today that support Digital Copy, with a pair of straight-to-DVD offerings: Hero Wanted with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ray Liotta, and Dolph Lundgren's Diamond Dogs. Sony's Digital Copy doesn't support iPod/Mac, but it does support Sony's PSP videogame unit as well as PCs. Sony has big plans for more PC-&-PSP Digital Copies, with upcoming titles including May releases of the Andy Serkis thriller The Cottage and Samuel L. Jackson in Cleaner, June's release of Jason Behr in The Tattooist, and a ton of July titles: the 2-DVD SE version of Sony's recent hit Vantage Point, the Brian Austin Green thriller Impact Point, the Jesse Metcalf starrer Insanitarium and both the DVD and Blu-ray versions of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder.

· Universal recently jumped into the party with this past February's release of American Gangster. Their Digital Copy provided an unrated edit of the film, but in PC file only, and only if you purchased the "3-Disc Collector's Edition" DVD. Last week Universal announced the next two titles will be the July releases of Brendan Fraser's The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, both coming July 8th on 2-DVD SE's. Universal recently announced Blu-ray versions of The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and spin-off film The Scorpian King for July 22nd; will the Digital Copies be included with the Blu-ray Disc format releases? I hope so, but the studio hasn't given any word on that just yet!

· The most recent studio to announce Digital Copy support is Lionsgate. Their first title will be the May 27th release of the fourth Rambo film: a Digital Copy will be included with the Blu-ray as well as the 2-DVD SE. The same is true for their June 3rd debut of The Eye, starring Jessica Alba and Goran Visnjic. Like Fox, Lionsgate is supporting Video iPod and Macintosh users, along with PCs and compatible devices.

By my count that's 22 titles which support Digital Copy so far (plus Warner's 5 "e-copy" titles), either already out or on the way. As the owner of an Archos 605 WiFi media player, I have several of these loaded up right now, and plan to at least double it from the announced upcoming releases. Digital Copy is, in my experience, a great way to get the portable version of the movie! It's very quick and painless to install: I got Juno and AvP:R home, and had both loaded up within 10 minutes of breaking the plastic on the first title.

When it's that easy, it's a guaranteed consumer sell. And the best part? That you still get your own packaged media version of the film, on a disc back in your house. Hard drives crash, and portable devices get lost or stolen, and digital data can get corrupted or erased for various reasons. But with Digital Copy, you've always got your shiny optical disc waiting for you when you get home...just in case. What's not to love? — David Lambert
