SAG Awards: Live Recap, Backstage and News Blog

10:47: Julie Christie, the queen of class and style, enters the room and captivates the crowd. 10:48: Then the gushing begins. On the subject of why Christie took the role for which she won her SAG award, it was all about her director, Sarah Polley: "[Polley's] a remarkable young woman and I love her.... She's very levelheaded, quite mad, very funny, a wonderful laugh to be with." And there's more: "Terribly witty, terribly intelligent, quick as a flash... everything." 10:49: Christie's even so classy that she's above the tinseltown fray. "I don't even know what 'Hollywood' means," she says. "It's a street somewhere, isn't it?" 10:52: But she does know what SAG is all about. "Without a union," Christie says, "we wouldn't have anyone to fight our injustices." As soon as Christie leaves, the rest of us are packing up not to mention hoping that the pesky "injustices" being fought this year might be old news this time next year. 10:17: Daniel Day-Lewis steps in, and immediately faces questions about why he mentioned Heath Ledger. "[He's] all I've been thinking about for the past few days," Lewis says. "I never met him.... But I'm absolutely certain he'd have done many wonderful things." Carrying the same gravitas off screen as he does on, he continues, "I think we should leave him alone, and leave his family alone. But that's not going to happen, we should just stop encouraging people to have greater and greater interest in raking over every detail, which is none of our business, anyway." 10:20: Even though he is an actor's actor not to mention super-into his union Lewis still gushes about his fellow thesps who are kicking it with him at the awards show. "It makes you feel sheepish when you're in the company of such fine actors," he says. "It's been a mighty year." But as for film criticism? Not so sheepish: "We're all force-fed so much information about films now.... I'd prefer if films could just speak for themselves.... It seems self-defeating to keep talking about it." 10:22: And what of the theme of oil in There Will Be Blood? Was it a surprise that an issue that was so central early in the century is still significant now? In a word, "No" and then he vanished. Now that is gravitas. Heath Ledger, whose life was tragically cut short this past week under yet-to-be-determined circumstances, not only was remembered in a montage of late actors at Sunday night's Screen Actors Guild Awards, but he was also acknowledged by the estimable Daniel Day-Lewis. Accepting the award for best actor in a film ( There Will Be Blood) and reflecting on his ongoing discovery as a performer, Day-Lewis said, "There are many actors in this room tonight
who have given me that sense of regeneration, and Heath Ledger gave it to me. In Monster's Ball, that character he created seemed to be almost like an unformed being retreating from himself, his father, his life
and yet we wanted to follow him. It was unique." Likewise, Day-Lewis called Ledger's work in Brokeback Mountain "unique" and "perfect," and at the culmination of his applauded, emotional speech, he said, "I'd like to dedicate this to Heath Ledger." It was a moving and special moment within an efficient if not slightly cold kudoscast. Matt MitovichFor more on Day-Lewis and Ledger, read Anna's backstage report. 9:49: Ah, Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, a couple I didn't ever want to see again, on or off screen. Apparently there's a movie studio that disagrees with me on that one. 9:51: Daniel Day-Lewis wins for Best Actor in a Leading Role. And he looks about 150 years younger than his character in There Will Be Blood. That's how good he is. His waiter tuxedo, not so much. 9:53: Lewis dedicates his award to Heath Ledger. 9:55: Forest Whitaker says "chanteuse." It's like Rolling Stone writers are penning this stuff. Man, I should have made this a drinking game. 9:56: Julie Christie takes it home for Female Actor in a Leading Role. Angelina's still got Brad. Blanchett makes revenge plans. 9:58: Christie reminds us that labor unions are awesome. I'm actually surprised that the level of union glorification tonight has been so low. 10:00: Tom Cruise is holding the envelope for Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture. Obviously the cats over at Best Week Ever who've been mocking him all month haven't hampered his drive. 10:01: No Country for Old Men wins. Honestly, I don't think anyone deserved it more. 10:02: Josh Brolin accepts the award for the cast and slips "cornucopia" into his speech. There's my cue to take a drink. Of Dr. Pepper. 10:02:30: Brolin: "Especially this year... the studio system is backfiring... and it's exciting for us actors." Scandal! 10:03: "The Coen brothers are freaky little people." Brolin is my beacon of, erm, smartitude. 10:04: Show's over, kids. Hope you enjoyed watching as much as I did ogling. — Sandra KoflerTVGuide.com's Screen Actors Guild Awards coverage: Winners and nominees Photo galleries Videos Cheers & Jeers on The Sopranos wins

9:19: In response to a left-fielder about whether Angelina Jolie is pregnant, Angela Kinsey (who really is with child) took the mic, saying, "As it turns out, I am pregnant... and Brad is great!" Several journos started calling out "Adopt me!" 9:24: When asked when they got their SAG cards, some have been winging it. Jenna Fischer explained that she was only SAG "eligible" when she started putting it on her rιsumι.... But soon she got a real-life bill for more money than she had (it was $1,200 big ones at the time). The movie she was working on at the time, though, went into extra production days during which she earned exactly $1,200, and thus... she became official. B.J. Novak, on the other hand, claimed he got it through charitable donation to L.A.'s local NPR affiliate, KCRW. "I donated 25 dollars," he said, " and weeks later, I got my card." 9:28: Tina Fey gushed about Steve Carell, but what does he think of her? "She's one of the funniest women on television," he said. He quickly added, "Present company excepted." 9:30: And finally, just as he was stepping off the stage, Carell answered a question about Ricky Gervais. "I saw Ricky in the men's room [earlier]," he said, "and I swear to god, he leaned over the urinal, and said, 'I knew it!'" After that type of intimacy, would he want to be on Extras? "Whatever he does next I will follow," Carell said, and stepped away. 9:35: Blair Underwood has been doing back-from-commercial intros all evening long. They're kind of like SAG PSAs, aren't they? 9:37: Viggo Mortensen obviously raided the Eastern Promises wardrobe. 9:38: They're only reading the nominees for Female Actor in a Supporting Role, and Tilda Swinton is already crying. Maybe she and Ricky Lizalde from this season's Project Runway would have a few things to talk about. 9:39: Ruby Dee with the win and a standing ovation. Even in Elton John-circa-"Crocodile Rock" glasses, she's still badass. 9:40: I feel the producers giving her the dirty eye for waxing lengthy. 9:42: Cate Blanchett doesn't look too thrilled that she didn't win. Chillax, lady, you could still win for Best Female Actor tonight. — Sandra KoflerTVGuide.com's Screen Actors Guild Awards coverage: Winners and nominees Photo galleries Videos Cheers & Jeers on The Sopranos wins

9:11: Tina Fey arrives, looking radiant. After some congrats, questions soon turn to how 30 Rock has been affected by the strike. According to Fey, the show's more vulnerable than others because it's been on the air less time. "We are the kind of show that could be affected by the strike.... We hope it's over soon. 9:13: As for stars Tina is excited to see, she said, "I walked behind Ellen Burstyn.... And I'd like to try to go back in the party and meet [Catherine Keener]. 9:14: And if she weren't acting? "I would have been a schoolteacher," she said, adding that she would have bored her captive audience. 9:16: Fey did find one upside to the strike, however, noting that for her, being a working mom is "hard in the same way it is for all working parents; it's painful.... The one blessing of the strike has been that I'm home with my kid." One thing she won't be doing while she's at home, though, is letting the kids toy with her new SAG trophy. "It's a baby-crusher," she said. Anna DimondTVGuide.com's Screen Actors Guild Awards coverage: Winners and nominees Photo galleries Videos Cheers & Jeers on The Sopranos wins

9:18: Kevin Kline wins Male Actor in a TV-movie or Miniseries. Phew, the anticipation is over. Too bad he's not around to pick up his trophy. 9:19: Helloooo, Ryan Gosling. 9:20: Mickey Rooney tells the audience they're beautiful, and he means it sincerely. "I think the world of all of you." We heart you too, Mr. R. 9:23: Queen Latifah wins Female Actor in a TV-movie or Mini, but isn't around either. She and Kline are obviously in cahoots. 9:25: In memoriam. Not a dry eye in my cubicle. 9:30: Looks like they were even able to include Heath Ledger. Very nice, montage editors, very nice. — Sandra KoflerTVGuide.com's Screen Actors Guild Awards coverage: Winners and nominees Photo galleries Videos Cheers & Jeers on The Sopranos wins

8:55: SAG president Alan Rosenberg speaks. Why does he look like a gangster from The Untouchables? They're called stylists, dude. 8:56: Denis Leary presents Charles Durning with his Lifetime Achievement Award. Durning appears to be internally critiquing Leary's delivery. 9:00: I like how they got Don LaFontaine, aka that-movie-trailer-voiceover-guy, to narrate the montage. Any second now I'm expecting "In a world... where there is no writers' strike... " 9:02: I was expecting camera pans of the audience's reactions just about now. But no, just a nice tribute. The SAGs are too classy for the likes of me. 9:05: Burt Reynolds has chosen to go with the Vincent Price 'stache tonight. 9:06: Reynolds wants to take a bite out of Durning's cheek? They already made that movie, Burt, and they used Anthony Hopkins. 9:07: Speaking of Vincent Price mustaches, Tommy Lee Jones is on that boat, too. Quick, fashion mags, pounce! 9:08: Does anyone else think that rock of a Lifetime Achievement Award looks like it was stolen from Easter Island? 9:09: "Thanks to you all, I am living my dream." Thanks, Durning. I need a tissue. Sandra KoflerTVGuide.com's Screen Actors Guild Awards coverage: Winners and nominees Photo galleries Videos Cheers & Jeers on The Sopranos wins

8:48: And backstage is back! Lights are on, TVs are on, and the mics are actually working again. Just in time to welcome the show's winners. 8:50 With the entire Sopranos cast onstage together, the jokes start flying, as do the insults; another journo is jokingly called an SOB, another is unjokingly told they asked a "stupid question" following a reference to Heath Ledger (no, I'm not naming names). On a more poignant note, however, several cast members call these awards "bittersweet," and explain that, as actors, they've been wearing their hearts on their sleeves throughout the series. 8:52 Aida Turturro lightens it up again, though, saying that the cast's "hotel won't be standing" by the time they're done celebrating their collective trifecta of wins. 8:38: Tina Fey scores Female Actor in a Comedy Series. "I want to thank everyone in the Screen Actors Guild for considering me an actor at all." What a year for Fey with all these awards! And she just keeps getting funnier. 8:39: Is it wrong that even the clips for Best Actor in a Comedy Series make me laugh? Really, I just want them all to win. Let's round up all the nominees and group-hug. 8:41: Alec Baldwin for Male Actor in a Comedy Series. If he was there tonight, I bet he'd do the running man onstage. Maybe instead he's calling his daughter and telling her sweet, happy things. 8:42: Ruby Dee looks beautiful, I could never wear that color. And she and Kathleen Turner should arm-wrestle over who has the more sultry voice. 8:44: Michael C. Hall seems to be laying off the bronzer. I'm glad that's one of those addictions actors can easily let go of. 8:46: The Office wins Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series for the second year in a row. That makes me want to go put all my coworkers' staplers in Jell-O to celebrate. 8:48: Were all the winners brainwashed to actually keep their speeches short and sweet this year? Because whatever they did, it's working. Sandra Kofler TVGuide.com's Screen Actors Guild Awards coverage: Winners and nominees Photo galleries Videos Cheers & Jeers on The Sopranos wins

8:23: Now that The Sopranos has won just about everything, reporters nearby are all giving knowing nods a lot of bets have just been won. So now we're just waiting for the second most famous fictional Italian family of all time to arrive. 8:27: We were just getting excited for the next award when all the TVs went dark and the power went out. SAG officials with worried looks and headsets are striding by, while a few journos roll in with full plates from craft services during this intermission, of sorts. 8:31: The TVs are still dark. I'm just wondering, if people win awards without the journos watching, do they still win? 8:37: Cheering erupts from the main auditorium, the media room is abuzz with chatter, and men in suits have arrived on the scene to hook us up again with the show! 8:20: Vanessa Williams looks like that lady in TLC's "Life Lessons" commercials in that yellow and black getup. You know, "Hey, where'd you park your DeLorian?" 8:21: Who wants to bet The Sopranos wins for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series? 8:23: La, la, la, gotta get yourself a gun, la, la, la. I'm psychic: It's true. 8:26: Emile Hirsch is looking a little bit Johnny Depp tonight. 8:27: Marion Cotillard best-dressed of the night. Gold star. I want that dress and I want to wear it to a ball. And not stain it. 8:29: Call it, friend-o: Javier Bardem wins for best supporting actor! OK, I'll sit down now. And what a heartfelt speech. I'm just happy that I'm no longer afraid of him after seeing him throw down in No Country for Old Men. Actually, I want to kiss his face. Too far? 8:00: All right, show time! I'm glad the main event's about to start, because I was just watching the TV Guide Network's red-carpet pre-show and really needed something to distract me from Lisa Rinna's massive cleave. 8:02: Sally Field, Doug Savant, Ellen Burstyn, Sandra Oh and a bunch of other actors recall memories of their acting roots, all ending with "I'm an actor." It's a lot better than "I'm not just the president, I'm also a client." Touching. 8:04: Kyle MacLachlan makes an American Express-card crack. Wow, that only took four minutes. 8:05: Tina Fey and Steve Carell look snappy. 8:07: James Gandolfini wins for Male Actor in a Drama Series. A man of few words, bra-vo. 8:08: John Travolta and Nikki Blonsky introduce the Hairspray montage. I don't think it was much of a stretch to make Travolta look like Tracy Turnblad's mom. 8:10: Debra Messing and Zac Efron present Leading Actress in a Drama Series. Deb's having some trouble reading the teleprompter. Ayy. 8:12: Edie Falco wins. How about we just give The Sopranos everything and call it a night?
