The Hills

by Robyn Ross
Read Episode Recap: The Next Move is Yours
Well folks, another season of The Hills has come to an end. But don’t fret, because as TV Guide reported last week, and as Lauren announced before the finale began, The Hills is indeed returning for another season. The episode began with Audrina looking for some new digs. Justin Bobby was there to help and was certainly convincing of how great it would be for her to have her own place. But was she planning to fill Lauren in on the fact that she’d soon be moving out?

Speaking of moving, it appears that Spencer has moved into Heidi’s apartment, though she wasn’t quite aware of this. Stephanie drops by and when he tells her she never came home, she decides to let him know that Heidi is working in Vegas, and by the way, may not return. This of course leads to Spencer’s decision to go after her in Vegas. In the LV it looks like Brent’s company is going to take over the Sahara, which is definitely in need of a revamp. Brent wants Heidi to research clubs in Europe so that they can transform the hotel to feel like Saint Tropez. Heidi is excited to be a part of the building team. Heidi in a hard-hat and heels pops into my mind, which makes me giggle.

Over at People’s Revolution, we finally see Whitney again. The producers really need to cut down on Speidi drama and instead show more of the fabulous Whitney. Anyway, she asks Lauren about the house and Audrina. Lauren tells her about the drift in their relationship and Whitney nails it on the head by saying that Lo and Lauren’s sisterly relationship probably makes her feel left out. Lauren wonders if she and Audrina were to not live together, would they have anything in common anymore?

Back in Vegas, Stephanie calls Heidi to find out where she is so that Spencer can go sneak up on her. Stephanie really needs to pick a side because she’s constantly switching up her loyalties and it’s starting to make her look real bad. So there’s Heidi, enjoying drinks with her co-workers, when suddenly Spencer shows up. She looks stunned. The have a word and Spencer gets more and more pathetic as the conversation goes on, practically begging her to come home. Heidi seems to want none of it. She goes back to the dinner table and apologizes to Brent who tells her this is her only shot and that she has some decisions to make. This one seems obvious Heidi.

The next morning, Brent and Sam are about to leave and Heidi is nowhere to be found. B squared wants to give her the benefit of the doubt but Sam has the final say in these plans. They take off and we then see Heidi coming down the escalator with Spencer. Looks like she’s decided to go back to him. This situation of choosing the boy over the career looks awfully familiar and didn’t work out so well last time. (Lauren choosing Jason in Season 1).

Back in LA, Lauren finally goes to talk to Audrina. She tells her that it’s weird she’s never around and Audrina says she feels like its none of her business going into the main house. Audrina tries to explain that she’s been doing things on her own lately and is a private person to which Lauren responds that she doesn’t have to tell her everything but she never tells her anything. Lauren is visibly upset when Audrina lays it on the line and says that Lo and Lauren’s friendship is standing between theirs. It seems to end awkwardly with Lauren walking away.

Meanwhile, the season comes to an end with Spencer and Heidi returning together to their abode. So what did you think of the finale, can you believe Heidi took Spencer back? Will Lauren and Audrina patch things up? Guess we have to wait until the next season to find out!

Things in The Hills are changing. Heidi is heading to Vegas while Lauren and Audrina are drifting apart. We finally see Heidi at work again and she decides it’s time to prove herself to Brent. She tells him she knows they’re expanding all over and offers to travel and even relocate in order to involve herself more in Bolthouse Productions. Just like that, Brent says that they’re working on building up clubs in Vegas and that she should join the team. Heidi, who thinks the project is brilliant, claims she’s totally up for the challenge.

Over at the new house, Lauren and Lo are laying out. As they’re wondering where Audrina is, she suddenly pops up and tells them she’s heading to the studio with Chiara to see some band I’ve never heard of. She invites the girls but Lo does not seem interested. Lauren suggests they do dinner after to celebrate their “roommate-ness” but at the Alkaline Trio recording session, Lauren and Lo actually show up but leave 5 minutes later to go to dinner without her.

Stephanie stops by Heidi’s, where the apartment has been totally revamped. Heidi tells her she’s going to be traveling with Brent and Sam to Vegas to work as a project manager. Stephanie cannot believe she’s actually leaving and is especially upset at the thought that now, she may never get Spencer to leave.

Meanwhile, Lauren and Lo got a puppy! Her name is Chloe and they saved her from a shelter. I have to admit that she’s adorable (and I have a soft spot for rescues) but can these girls really care for an animal? And speaking of, what ever happened to Heidi’s Chihuahua from season 1? Anyway, even Audrina gushes over the pup but Lo makes a point to say that Chloe is going to have 2 mommies (with no mention of a third). Just another reminder that Lo and Lauren are not including Audrina in their lives.

Stephanie is fed up with Spencer and wants him out. Haven’t we heard this before? Apparently this time she’s for real because he actually leaves. He says he cannot wait to go which makes me wonder, why is he there if his sister makes him so miserable? He continues to act like a 12 yr old and tells Stephanie to get out of his face.

Brent, Heidi and Sam get on their private plane to Vegas. When Sam asks why Heidi couldn’t travel before and Brent tells him that it’s because she had a boyfriend that Heidi mentions is now out of the picture. I guess Spencer isn’t aware of this fact because he leaves Stephanie’s and shows up at Heidi’s apartment who of course is not there. I have to say he just looked sad and pathetic.

Next week is the finale and though Heidi is still in Vegas she soon gets a visitor. Audrina looks for a new place and tells Lauren that Lo is pushing them apart. What will the next season be if Heidi and Spencer are split and Lauren and Audrina are no longer friends? Maybe it will be time for MTV, and all of us viewers, to move on.

Read Episode Recap: A Date With The Past
Well either things happen very fast in The Hills, or MTV just skips weeks at a time. The episode began with Lauren, Lo and Audrina looking at a house to move into. I know I should just except it for what it is but I can’t help but think, how did they go from “let’s all move in together” to “look at this house I found” to “let’s throw a housewarming party at our new house we’ve already moved into?” Audrina is already shafted to the “guesthouse” which is a sure sign that things may not be peachy keen for long.

At Caffe Primo, Lo and Lauren discuss the housewarming party they’re going to have and Lauren brushes over the tidbit that Steven Colletti is going to be making an appearance. Lauren says it’s not a thing but Lo says it’s always a thing and Lauren sorta wants it to be a thing and by the third mention of this “thing,” I’m lost.

Audrina mentions to her new roomies that Justin Bobby is going to be swinging by the party but when Lauren and Lo barely press her on the subject she seems offended. Stephen Colletti comes up again (apparently he can only be addressed now by his full name) and Lo again mentions their "thing." Audrina seems a bit put off when Lo says that they’ve been talking as if Audrina should know this already. I sense some major tension with this new living situation.

On her way to the party, Stephanie stops by Heidi’s to tell her where she’s going. She seems to be surprised with the reaction she gets but we all knew Heidi would not be happy. She doesn’t understand why Steph has to be friends with Lauren and Stephanie doesn’t understand why Heidi can’t get over it. But she gives in and decides not to go and instead stay in with Heidi. She looks seriously bummed though.

Finally the party gets started. Brody comes with a gift and his girlfriend Cora. Mr. Colletti shows up and its just likes old times back in Laguna. Then JB comes sporting a new clean, short-haired look. Definitely an upgrade. Audrina already spills to him about how Lauren questioned him coming. Audrina and Lauren seem to be growing farther and farther apart.

The next night, Stephen picks up Lauren for their date/dinner and she is decked out considering it may just be a friendly meal. They head to Il Cielo, a very romantic spot where all Lauren and Stephen seem to talk about is how everyone wants them to be together and why can’t they just hang out without it meaning anything? We know that at least Lauren is hoping it does mean something. Do you think Stephen feels the same? After dinner, he drops her off, where Lo is waiting to hear the scoop. Lauren wisely says that hanging out with Stephen makes her feel like she’s in high school and she’s not in high school anymore. Does she really mean that or is she protecting herself from getting hurt?

Next week looks pretty jam-packed with goodies. A new puppy, Audrina dissing Lauren and Lo, Heidi moving to Vegas and Stephanie kicking Spencer out. Can’t wait!

Read Episode Recap: A New Roommate
The theme of this week’s episode was venting. Whitney made a quick appearance as Lauren calmly vented to her about Audrina and Heidi becoming friends again. When Lauren tells Lo and Audrina she got an A in computer class it leads to a conversation about Stephanie which again leads to Heidi. It’s a never ending circle. Heidi is over at Stephanie’s getting ready for her 2nd attempt at a girls night out. When Stephanie mentions that Lauren will probably be there it actually gives Heidi a glimmer of hope that perhaps now that she and Spencer are splitsville, Lauren will suddenly forgive her for all the things that happened in the past. Such is not the case. At Goa, where apparently all the cool kids go on Thursday nights, everyone is there. Audrina, Lo and Lauren are chilling at one table while Heidi and Stephanie are at another. Even Justin Bobby makes an appearance! As soon as Lauren steps away, Heidi runs over to tell Audrina that JB is in the house. When Lauren and Lo return, Lauren is none to pleased that Stephanie has not only brought Heidi when clearly she knew Lauren would be there, but that she brought her over to their table. Luckily Justin Bobby walks over and steals the spotlight for a few minutes. Did anyone notice the little sparkle in Audrina’s eye? Clearly she’s not over him. Lauren suddenly exclaims that she needs to leave immediately as she isn’t able to get over sitting at the same table as her nemesis.

The next day, Lo and Lauren are talking about moving in together. Lauren is just so over her Hollywood Hills apartment (which side-note, she doesn’t really live in the Hills) and is ready to get a house with all her girls. Audrina isn’t a part of this conversation because she’s too busy taking back hanging with Justin Bobby. But hey, at least Justin has moved on from the hood over his head to an even less appealing hat covering his head. He actually seems a bit livelier and as usual was not at a loss for giving deep meaningful insight.

The next morning while Audrina is telling Lauren she feels like she has one of her good friends back, Heidi is attempting to vent to Spencer that Lauren was cold towards her at Goa. Spencer doesn’t care in the least and actually makes a point when he asks her, “Did you really think you would move back in together and everything would be honkey dorey?” The rest of that conversation didn’t go over too well. For a couple who is apparently now shopping around a reality show on their upcoming nuptials, they do not act like they like each other.

So while the episode seemed to mostly deal with the usual drama, one notable thing that happened is that Lo, Lauren and Audrina decided they were all going to move in together, only what’s supposed to be a happy moment just seems awkward. Could this be a sign to the future?

Read Episode Recap: Girls Night Out
I’m a bit disappointed to say this but either I’m growing old of the same drama constantly re-surfacing, or this season of The Hills is just more boring than usual. Does anyone else agree? Well, onto my recap. Heidi visits Audrina at work wanting to gain her friendship back. She asks her to join in on a girls night out and Audrina hesitantly shakes her head yes. On the other side of town, Whitney is slammed at People’s Revolution and so she summons Lauren for help. Whitney re-introduces her to Kelly Cutrone who immediately asks Lauren to jump in and get to work. Lauren is sporting a super-cute short hairdo by the way. Kelly cuts to the chase and tells them how slow they are and re-iterates the all black rule. Lauren realizes this rules applies to her which means she’ll get to work the shows. She’s glowing with excitement.

Girls night out quickly turns into Spencer crashing the party only he ignores Heidi and her friends and proceeds to take shots with other girls. This infuriates Heidi who then freaks out on Spencer before leaving the club. The next morning, Lauren asks Audrina where she was the night before. Audrina tells her, mentions Heidi was there having a girls night, but strategically does not mention she was a part of said girls night. Audrina jumps into the Spencer/Heidi blow-out to which Lauren warns her that if either of them be-friend her, it’s only to get back at Lauren’s friendship with Stephanie. This time I don’t agree with her. I think Heidi is genuinely lonely and misses her old friend.

At the fashion show, Kelly tells Lauren and Whitney to act as sheep-herding dogs. Backstage is stressful but Whitney and Lauren pull it off as usual. Kelly says, “OMG,” and commends them on a job well done. And apparently Lauren was such a great help that it warranted a job offer. Kelly mentions that there’s going to be some changes in the office and then barks orders to a senior member of her staff, and not to the lowest person on the totem poll, which would now be Lauren. It seems like her new job is going to lead to someone else losing theirs.

Do you think Lauren earned a spot at People’s Revolution? Is Spencer and Heidi’s relationship vacation going to be permanent? Will next week’s return of Justin Bobby stir things up?

"When Spencer finds out…"

It’s Lauren’s birthday and as predicted, this came with nothing but drama. Lo and Lauren start the party a little early. Lauren mentions that while Brody and Frankie can’t come, all her girls, which now includes Stephanie, will be there.

Stephanie is about fed up with Spencer for taking over her apartment and even bringing his ugly fish tank in. When Spencer asks when the maid is coming, Stephanie replies, “You’re looking at her.” I loved this line. I also enjoyed how Stephanie brought up a good point about Spencer not looking for a job. Has he ever had one during the course of this show?

So of course Bolthouse is handling the entry into S. Bar, where Lauren is having her birthday. And Kimberly, Heidi’s closest friend, is manning the door when Stephanie arrives. Lauren tells her how awesome she thinks it is that she came, but Audrina and Lo are whispering about how weird it is. Heidi finds out the next day that her future sister-in-law attended her arch-nemesis’ party. She immediately calls Spencer who’s also mad, and proceeds to call his sister “junior Brody.” Speaking of Brody, that day he has a lunch date with Lauren at Toast, but nothing really interesting transpires. It’s just another opportunity for Lauren to be warned about Stephanie’s intentions.

At their apartment, Spencer makes Stephanie cry. He tells her she’s crazy and is only upset because she knows what she did. Stephanie tells Lauren about this during class and advises her that he’s probably just sensitive after losing Brody as a friend. She’s also quick to tell her that she didn’t do anything wrong. Stephanie still feels the need though to come clean to Heidi. She explains that they have fashion in common to which Heidi responds, all girls have fashion in common. This probably wasn’t the best reason for Stephanie to give Heidi as to why she and Lauren click so well. Stephanie then alludes to the fact that Heidi and Spencer wronged Lauren in the past, and almost “goes there.” Heidi simply warns her that the friendship will eventually go sour just like hers did. In some weird way, I actually liked Stephanie in this episode. I have no idea why she’s complicating things by befriending Lauren but I like how she stands up for herself to Spencer and Heidi. Do you agree?

"Just Be Careful…"

Lauren and Whitney are at Lulu’s, my favorite breakfast spot. Boy am I’m craving their delicious breakfast tacos. But anyway, Whitney is telling Lauren about her new job and you can sense that Lauren is a bit jealous that she hasn’t moved on from interning at Teen Vogue. We get a glimpse of People’s Revolution and learn that it’s LA Fashion Week, which means complete devotion to work. After a tense few minutes during a staff meeting, Whitney once again steps up and offers a great idea for celebrity outreach. It seems sort of obvious though, which makes me question how real the moment was.

Apparently Stephanie and Heidi have resolved their issues because they’re headed to Vice for girls’ night. And what do you know, Audrina is there. Heidi says hi to her and even though it’s super awkward, she tells Audrina that if she ever wants to talk or hang out, she’s there. Heidi either wants Audrina back as a friend to piss off Lauren or because she genuinely misses her but regardless comes up with a way to make peace. Heidi decides to grab the stuff she left at the old apartment so that she has a reason to talk to Audrina. She accomplishes her mission and reminds Audrina to give her a call if she ever wants to hang. Lauren learns about this possible friendship rekindled when Stephanie mentions in class that Audrina and Heidi are now cool. I’ve never seen one girl constantly flip sides more than Stephanie. Of course Lauren asks Audrina if she talked to Heidi and goes on to warn her, similarly to how everyone has warned Lauren about Stephanie. The cycle clearly never ends.

Next week, Lauren takes Whitney up on her offer to help out at work which seems to lead to a job offer. Will she take it and leave Teen Vogue too?

"Back to LA"
Lauren returns to Los Angeles with a new outlook on life. France opened up her eyes to other cultures and other men, especially who aren’t named Brody. Whitney also returned ready to make a big change, to leave Teen Vogue and pursue her passion for styling. Her maturity shines as she asks Lisa Love for her blessing to explore new job opportunities. In one of those rare, caring moments, Lisa assures her that recommendations will be made in her favor.

Heidi finally returns to Bolthouse. She tells Kimberly she wants Spencer to move out, yet not see other people. Spencer on the other hand, is mad he has to move out and considers the opposite. His sister Stephanie, who he’s moving in with, wonders what it will be like when Heidi comes over to hang with her. Way to be a loving and supportive sister concerned for your brother’s feelings. I guess all Pratts are alike.

Whitney has her interview at People’s Revolution with Kelly Cutrone. Kelly seems like a Lisa Love on speed. She cuts to the chase and offers her a job. Between Lisa’s recommendation and the way Whitney has portrayed herself through the seasons, I’m not surprised this job offer came so easily. The one catch of the position is that Kelly informs her she’ll have to give up her life, but look on the bright side, she also says she’ll gain a whole new one. It should be interesting to see how Whitney’s new career role pans out throughout this season.

A very single Lauren and Audrina hit up their hangout, Le Deux, and it’s about 5 minutes before Frankie and Brody show up. She won’t give him a hug but instead asks him where his girlfriend is. Brody asks Lauren where her boyfriend is, and says “I have friends in Paris.” C’mon Brody, I think your “friends” are the producers and cameramen who told you about Lauren’s trip. Lauren’s clearly bitter and still not over him. The next day Lauren and Lo are out to lunch and it’s obvious she’s feeling down. Lo’s honesty about the situation will hopefully make Lauren realize that the conversation is always the same, and in the end she never feels good enough.

Spencer and Whitney are both moving out and seemingly moving on with their lives. Spencer gets his stuff from the apartment and it certainly feels like a breakup and not just “giving Heidi her space.” Whitney leaves Teen Vogue after reminiscing over the good and bad times her and Lauren have had there. With Spencer out of the apartment, will his relationship with Heidi improve or only worsen? Will Whitney be able to handle a new job and will Lauren survive Teen Vogue without her?

"An Unexpected Friend"
Lauren will never be able to escape the Pratts. In what I guess is her first class of the semester, she hears Stephanie’s name called, and realizes they’re going to be sitting only a few seats away from each other for an entire semester. Based on the previews, we know this will spice things up when they become, gasp, friends.

Whitney is already jet-setting to New York for fashion week. She doesn’t learn much about her new position, except that she must wear black and that she’ll be working until 2 or 3 in the morning. Her first task is to help style designer Sass & Bide as they prepare for their fashion show. During the fittings, Whitney doesn’t keep her opinions to herself and instead of being shot down, her ideas go over well. She’s giddy over her new job. The next day Whitney is thrown into the mix to help backstage during the Sass & Bide show. She excels under the pressure and proves herself to Kelly. Already she is rewarded when she learns that upon her return to LA, her role at People’s Revolution will be expanded.

On the 2nd day of computer class, Stephanie apologizes to Lauren for the way she screamed at her during their last major encounter. Is She-Spencer being genuine or do you think she just wants more screen time? I think it’s the latter. Stephanie helps Heidi paint her apartment and manages to slip in that she told Lauren she was sorry. Heidi immediately puts on her sourpuss face. Over at Lola’s, Audrina and Lo tell Lauren they don’t trust Stephanie but Lauren is pretty much defending her. I think we can all see that this is headed towards an actual Pratt/Conrad friendship.

Stephanie complains to Spencer that she’s sick of choosing sides. She’s also quick to say he’s a loser and not worthy of the gorgeous Heidi. I think you just chose your side there. And Spencer says he can’t trust her. Here’s a great family dynamic for you, and why are they even living together then? Stephanie and Lauren have lunch the next day and Stephanie continues to bash her bro. I don’t get this girl and I hope Lauren doesn’t give in to her fake attempts at being nice.

Next week is Lauren’s birthday, which can only mean drama.

Read Episode Recap: "Paris Changes Everything"
Last time we left The Hills, many things were left hanging in the balance. Would Lauren return from Paris with Brody waiting for her? Would Spencer and Heidi make it through another rough patch? Would Lauren and Heidi ever make up? Welcome to the start of a new season where hopefully all those questions will eventually be answered.

Lauren and Whitney arrive in Paris with their driver for the week waiting. He hands them their itinerary and the work begins. They must pick up shoes for the debutantes and then pick up their ball gowns. Too excited to wait, they go get their gorgeous dresses and by the time they get to the next stop, the store is closed. Already we can see this trip to Paris is not going to be a smooth one.

Back in the US Heidi has returned home to Colorado, trying to figure out if her relationship with Spencer is worth repairing. In LA, Spencer is a mess and his sister makes him realize he has no choice but to go after her. He arrives in Crested Butte to be greeted by her father. I loved his reaction to Spencer showing up. “What the heck…(silence)…are you doing here?” It was a bit of an awkward conversation that ended with Spencer waiting inside for Heidi’s return.

In Paris, Lauren and Whitney are put to work. Lauren makes her second mistake and answers her cell phone. Helloo, this is your chance to prove yourself, don’t answer your phone in front of your boss. Audrina is on the other end with not so great news. Brody has a girlfriend. Lauren is in shock but Whitney quickly suggests that they too can find boyfriends in 2 days. So they go and meet up with a band that Lauren has met before. Not before long, she and Matthias lock eyes and we know Lauren has a new crush. The next evening the boys invite Lauren and Whitney out but Lauren has nothing to wear. She ponders wearing her ball gown and then convinces herself she can hem it without making a hole. Third night, third mistake.

Dinner in Colorado looks awful. Heidi makes a toast to her parents for loving and supporting her, looks at Spencer, and says, “And that’s about it.” Okay I know things didn’t end well between the two, but when did Heidi get so nasty? She wants nothing to do with Spencer and for the first time, EVER, I sort of feel bad for the guy. Heidi basically tells him to leave.

The girls are out in Paris and Lauren is torn between two guys. It’s 2 am and time to leave. As Lauren and Whitney are walking outside, Matthias runs up to Lauren and says, “You are leaving me without kissing bye-bye?” Maybe that was supposed to be romantic but it just made me laugh. She gives him the double kiss and goes on her way. The next morning she takes out the seam she put in the dress when she realizes there is a huge, cannot be missed, stain on her dress. Did she honestly think wearing it on the town, it would come back home perfectly? She freaks out and has Whitney call up the manager of Alberta Ferretti. It doesn’t seem promising but when she hangs up Whitney tells Lauren if they can get there in 15 minutes he’ll have a dress for her. What would a Lauren/Teen Vogue event be without a crisis barely averted? She grabs the dress and they make their way to the Crillon Ball. When it’s all over, Kimball sends Lauren on an errand and takes the opportunity to question Whitney’s intention at the magazine. She tells him that she sees herself dealing with fashion more directly rather than being behind the scenes and he certainly agrees. This is our first hint that Whitney’s journey at Teen Vogue may be coming to an end soon. Meanwhile, Lauren gets a call from Matthias who wants to take her around Paris for her last night. He takes her on his Vespa and they ride off into the sunset in the City of Lights. They return the next morning and she tells him to call her when he’s in LA. Something tells me this isn’t the last that we’ll see of Matthias.

It’s back to reality for Lauren and Whitney who return from Paris. It’s also back to LA for Spencer who must leave Heidi to figure things out. This is one fight that doesn’t seem like it can be mended.

So was the premiere all you hoped it to be? And how good does this upcoming season look? Stephen and Lauren re-igniting flames, Heidi and Audrina repairing their friendship and Lauren and she-Spencer in the same class. Cannot wait!!
