Ghost Whisperer Blog

by exec producers Kim Moses and Ian Sander
Read Avatar World
Hi Everyone,

We spent this week shooting our third episode of the new season – where we’re taking Ghost Whisperer to Avatar World! This is going to be an especially cool show, as Melinda will spend part of it trapped in a virtual video game world. We’re shooting two full days in front of a green screen, so that we can create an intricate 3-D space in post production. This should keep Armen Kevorkian and Art Codron, our visual effects whizzes, pretty busy for a while.

We’re also getting ready to hit the costumed media extravaganza that is San Diego Comic Con. Ghost Whisperer has a panel on Sunday that will feature Ian and Kim, along with the gorgeous Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jamie Kennedy and exec-producer PK Simonds. If you’re at the convention, stop by and ask all your burning Spirit World questions. We can’t wait to see you!

Tonight, THE CRADLE WILL ROCK/Ep. 216 is airing. In this tension-filled episode, Melinda survives the gunpoint robbery of a jewelry store only to find herself trapped with a spirit who she met at the scene of the crime.

This show stars Shawn Christian (Days of Our Lives) and Brian J. White (Moonlight). It was written by Jed Seidel, and was directed by one of our cinematographers, Jim Chressanthis.

Music-wise, we feature the songs “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall (Virgin Records) and “Boston” by Augustana (Epic Records).

Thanks for watching, and check back next week for more Comic Con details!

Read Jamie Kennedy on GW
Last week we promised we would reveal the new addition to the Ghost Whisperer cast for Season 4 — it's Jamie Kennedy coming in to play Eli, a maverick character who Melinda encounters in the season premiere. And yeah, Jamie’s got interesting things going on in the spirit world this season.

You know Jamie from some of this other work in addition to his fabulously funny stand-up: The Jamie Kennedy Experiment — who does funny and a multitude of characters better than Jamie on that show, huh? Did you see him in Three Kings? If not, check it out. And of course, he's in the Scream movies — you can expect lots of inside references on that series.

There will also be lots of online action (and interaction) with Jamie this summer. We’re banking his outtakes (which are hilarious) and some of his on-camera bits — can’t wait to share with you. Would love to hear about some of your favorite Jamie Kennedy moments. You’ll be able to post your thoughts on our official Ghost Whisperer website at CBS.com very soon. We’ll let you know about the new capabilities of the site next Friday.

As for last Friday’s Ghost Whisperer, we are aired one of our faves — "Cat’s Claw" (Episode 211). (Speaking of favorites, we love Love in the red dress in the jungle in this episode — and heard from lots of fans about that when they saw it.

In this episode, Melinda encounters a mud-covered ghost who transports her into an eery dangerous jungle, where she begins to unravel the mystery of one of Professor Payne’s (Jay Mohr) colleagues. Also appearing in this episode is Reed Diamond (Journeyman) and Julie Ann Emery (The Riches).

For music, we feature “Before I Met You” by Miranda Lee Richards (Nettwerk Music Group) and CBS Records artist Senor Happy with their song “Love If You’re Real.” We love Senor Happy’s sound and have used them in a number of Ghost Whisperer episodes as well as our TV Guide award-winning webisodes: Ghost Whisperer: The Other Side. Check it out at CBS.com if you haven’t seen it!

And if you haven’t checked out Melinda Gordon/Love the Ghost Whisperer speed-painting, go to our YouTube page — it’s really cool. Wired Magazine thinks so — they did a piece on it.

Thanks for watching, as always, and check in with us next week — can’t wait to bring you up to date on all the behind-the-scenes spirit action on Ghost Whisperer.

Read Starting up Season 4
We've received many, many e-mails from fans wanting to know how the fire at Universal on Sunday has affected GHOST WHISPERER for Season 4. We're very grateful for the outreach and amazed at how caring our fans and the press are. From the bottom of our hearts, we and the writers and the cast and the crew thank all of you. GHOST WHISPERER is a well-oiled machine so it takes more than a fire to knock us off track. Please know we are very grateful for the brave firemen and security officers who tended to the fire because they were able to save so very much of the Universal Lot -- including many of GHOST WHISPERER'S sets. Fortunately this did not occur during production hours.

We will be moving some of our shooting off the lot until we are able to rebuild (which will happen quickly) and some of the fun will be when all of you watch the first couple of episodes. We're issuing a challenge to you -- when you see the first episode of Season 4, can you guess what those new locations are?

We're having lots of fun bringing in a new character to the show -- his name is Eli (new creation by PK Simonds and his fabulous writing team) -- and by next Friday we will be able to reveal the actor is who will be playing Eli. We're stoked and we think you're gonna love him.

The other thing that's very cool about starting Season 4 is that we're launching into a new level of mythology in the spirit world and we'll be revealing all this to all of you as we move forward. As always, we'll scour the internet for feedback on what you're thinking, how you're feeling about the new developments of GHOST WHISPERER and we'll be sharing it with our partners.

While GHOST WHISPERER is writing, shooting and editing new episodes and creating new internet activities, CBS is airing some of our favorite episodes from previous seasons. Tonight, THE NIGHT WE MET/Ep. 209 is being broadcast.

You might remember this episode from Season 2, as we flash back to when Melinda and Jim first fell in love, while she also helps a spirit accused of arson. If you want to read more about Melinda’s personal past, check out Melinda’s Diary at http://fansofgw.com/melindasdiary.

As for special guests, we had Tim Kang (Rambo) and Beverly Todd (The Bucket List) both appear in this episode. Musically speaking, we also feature “Somersault” by Decoder Ring (No Records/Bella Union) and the song "Since You've Been Around" by Rosie Thomas (Singalong Records).

Thanks to you all and have a great week!

Read Universal Studios Fire
In regards to the unfortunate fire that took place this weekend on the Universal back lot, we would like to thank those emergency responders who so bravely and effectively handled the situation. Despite damage to some of the exterior Ghost Whisperer sets, we plan to begin production for Season 4 on time, so that the show can premiere as scheduled this fall. Everyone at Ghost Whisperer thanks you for your concern and support.

Written and directed by the show's wonderful creator John Gray, we wanted to end this season with a bang- tying up some loose ends that have been with us since the beginning of the series. Melinda's family clearly has a more complicated history than she had ever expected... and by the end of the show, she's got a whole new mystery to solve.

What'd you think?
Read GW Stranglehold
Hey GW fans!

Tonight's episode #317 “Stranglehold” focuses on the spirit world and possession. This episode was really fun to do -- because we start branching into a new area of the mythology of Ghost Whisperer. The episode begins the unveiling of the phenomena of displaced spirits and possession. Eric Laneuville (who was nominated for an Emmy last season for directing an episode of LOST) directed this episode. Eric really did a great job.

P.K. Simonds (Executive Producer) and Laurie McCarthy (Co-Executive Producer) wrote it together. Tess Harper, who played Tommy Lee Jones' wife in this year's Academy Award Winning No Country For Old Men, is the guest star who plays the mom. She did a terrific job, don't you think?

Also in this episode we see the return of Weeds star Martin Donovan, returning as Tom Gordon, as well as Ignacio Serricchio (General Hospital) who plays Melinda’s brother, Gabriel.
As for music- we feature a great song by Liz Stahler called “Someone You Love” (UnHolYHigHwaY Music). We also feature an independent artist called The Brightwings, with their song “All I Need.”
We've just updated the Ghost Whisperer widget -- so check it out immediately if you haven’t yet at http://www.fansofgw.com/widget. Join us for the season finale of Ghost Whisperer, next Friday, May 16th at 8PM on CBS to get the final piece of the Ghost Whisperer puzzle. You will truly be surprised at what Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) discovers during her journey in the spirit world.

Have a great week and be sure to check in next Friday night!

Read From the World of the Sexiest Star....
Alright — before we get started, have you seen the cover of the May 5 TV Guide? Jennifer Love Hewitt is featured as the 'Sexiest Woman on TV.' She wins hands down, we can tell you. And did you see today's issue of People? Love is featured as one of the 100 Most Beautiful People. Having worked with her for 3 1/2 years — we say she is the most beautiful person inside and out. Truly!

It's the end of the week and you know what that means — another installment of Ghost Whisperer. "Deadbeat Dads" had unique comedy flair to it. The script was beautifully written by our newest addition to the Ghost Whisperer writing staff — Mark Perry. Mark joins us from the writing staff of Brothers & Sisters. He's worked with P.K. Simonds who jumped aboard the Ghost Whisperer train at the beginning of Season 3 (as you all are very well aware!). Mark and P.K. worked together on Party of Five (Jennifer Love Hewitt's old stomping ground).

Mark's script made us laugh during production — nothing better than funny ghost antics. But the story turns serious and emotional — we were so moved by the storytelling and the acting and we hope you were too when you watched the episode tonight.

While we were shooting this episode, Jay Mohr spent quite a bit of time reminding all of us that he sleeps with his Ghost Whisperer co-star! That being his real-life wife, Nikki Cox (Las Vegas) who guest stars as Professor Payne's ex-girlfriend in this episode. This episode gives you a chance to explore the personal side of the Professor and answers the mystery that was set-up last season in Episode 220 when Payne's wife revealed herself to Melinda.

In this episode, Melinda helps Payne juggle an old flame (Cox), her 10-year-old son (Nathan Gamble of Babel) and the jealous ghost of Payne's deceased wife (the very talented Rachel Shelley of The L Word). Rachel has been with us several times during episodic production and we're lucky to have her because she's talented, lovely and beautiful.

There is another surprise in this episode — the conclusion of Ghost Whisperer's award-winning web series, THE OTHER SIDE II. Zach — the ghost featured in the web series, finally connects with Melinda Gordon and ... Uh-we're not telling you what happens. If you can, watch the THE OTHER SIDE I and THE OTHER SIDE II before you watch this episode to find out what really happens, you'll really get it.

In this episode we feature a powerful song by pop-sensation Sia: "Day Too Soon" (Hear Music). We hope you love it as much was we do in this show.

We're attaching the links for PROFESSOR PAYNE'S BRAIN – an interactive flash game that we created to get you ready for this episode - and HOUSE OF PAYNE – a unique online video featuring who else but PROFESSOR PAYNE.

And it's not too late to get the outfit worn by Melinda in last week's episode! Go to CBS.auction.seenon.com or check out our widget at FansOfGW.com and place your bid in the first ever Ghost Whisperer Auction, before it ends on Monday!

Have a great weekend and check-in with us next week.

Read Don't Turn Out The Lights...
Hey GW Fans-

Tonight’s episode 315 “Horror Show” was a fun one to put together. In this episode Melinda investigates a local college student who experiences hauntings- straight out of the movies. It’s a show like we’ve never had and Ian had a great time directing it.

When coming up with the storyline for this episode, the writers and post-production departments alike watched dozens and dozens of scary movies for inspiration. By the end of it, I think we all became masters of scare! If you watched it tonight you’ll have noticed that it pays homage to many classic horror films like Psycho, The Exorcist, The Grudge, Chucky, The Blair Witch Project and I Know What You Did Last Summer (starring Jennifer Love Hewitt!) among others.

Speaking of Love, she was a real trooper while shooting this episode. I mentioned in another blog that she had to run around on set for several hours chasing our ghost, and hurt her ankle! Thankfully she’s almost completely better, and working as hard as ever.

Our other stars in this episode include Jonathan Murphy (October Road) and Leah Pipes (Life Is Wild). And in the world of music, you’ll hear the great song “Capsize” by Spencer Tracy (Embryo Records).

If you haven’t heard yet, you also have the chance to own some of the pieces that Love wears on the show! Go to http://www.cbs.auction.seenon.com and check out the first ever Ghost Whisperer Auction. My favorite piece is the black belt from an Australian designer Willow- the design is incredibly intricate and beautiful. If you get a second also be sure to take a look at the widget we created at http://www.fansofgw.com/widget. When you click on “Ghost Whisperer Videos” make sure you watch our newest online creation, the Spirit Origami- a wonderful piece done by the talented Nori Shirasu. You can also watch the video on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc42gRK-TWk.

After you watch the show and the Spirit Origami video- get the chatter going with other GW fans on http://heynielsen.com to discuss! We hope you will passionately chime in on what you think works on the show and what you want to see more of. Your opinion is very important to us!

Alright, that’s it for now but make sure you tune in to next week’s all-new episode— which brings some surprises for Professor Payne (Jay Mohr) and Melinda Gordon (Love)!

Until then…

Read GW SLAM
Hello,

Tonight's episode is an encore of “SLAM.” Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) investigates a high school haunting, which involves Delia's (Camryn Manheim) son Ned. This was the show which introduced our new 'Ned' Christoph Sanders who is our new resident teen heart-throb. Because of the terrific response we had to him when he came onto the show we've picked him up to be a regular on the show for next year. Lucky him...and lucky us! We also brought back Omid Abtahi (Sleeper Cell) as Grandview's blogger, Justin Yates, who is trying to find out anything (dirt or otherwise) on Melinda. Incidentally, the writer named Justin after one of the guys we have working in our Digital Media Department, Justin Fisher.

The show also features the hit song "Apologize" by One Republic (Mosley/Interscope). Also be sure to check out a little behind the scenes action at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfWm7-y5hJU.

Well I (Ian) just finished directing next week's original episode "Horror Show" which is undoubtedly the scariest episode we've ever done. The guest star is teenager Leah Pipes (Life is Wild; Clubhouse) and she is amazing. The show pays homage to horror films including Psycho, The Grudge, Blair Witch, Carrie, The Exorcist, Chucky, Puppet Master, The Amityville Horror, I Know What You Did Last Summer (Starring JLH), Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween. It's the coolest and most fun show I've ever directed. That show will also be the first of 4 originals in a row leading to the season finale.

John Gray (creator of “Ghost Whisperer”) just came into town. He's writing and will direct the season finale, which will be broadcast on May 16th and promises to be another great season ender!

Have a terrific week and be safe.

Read Ghost Whisperer Upside Down
So this week, as you saw by Friday’s episode, the Ghost Whisperer world was turned upside down by mischievous spirits. And not just on TV -- online the Ghost Whisperer world has been flipped. If you've got any thoughts on it, let us know ASAP! Go to http://myspace.com/ghostwhisperer as an example.

Friday's episode "The Gravesitter" was about a string of vandalism that leads Melinda to the town blogger, Justin, who knows her secret. John Gray connected this character Justin, played by Omid Abtahi (Sleeper Cell) with Justin Fisher, our real-life Ghost Whisperer internet guy who's hard at work each week helping us launch interesting assets for our fans to mash-up in between each broadcast of Ghost Whisperer.

The music at the end of this episode is “The Moment I Said It” by Imogen Heap (Sony/ BMG) -- love that song! Other songs include “Ridiculous” by independent artist Candy Butchers and “Head vs. Heart” by Brighton, MA (Loose Tooth Records).

The GW writers and the director (Fred Toye) did a brilliant job on this episode -- the scope of the show -- shooting on the ocean, the boat sinking action (which took place in a tank at Universal--we talked about this in an earlier blog when we were actually shooting the scenes) -- was a real challenge to shoot. But the Ghost crew moved through it with such passion it was like they were possessed (hint!) And then, as you saw, we sliced right through the earth on the Universal Lot to get to the Underground world (below Grandview) to follow Justin.

The other thing that we think worked beautifully (in addition to the acting, of course) is when Justin steps off the curb and reveals the Underworld through the pavement of the street. That took a great deal of planning and execution from Art and Armen in our Visual FX department. Then, of course, Tony Miller, our editor had to meld all of these worlds together in the editing room on a very, very fast schedule. We've accelerated everything since the strike was settled to get these episode on the air as fast as possible,
because we've heard from many of the GW fans who are ready for new original episodes. Done! But just in the nick of time -- finished the episode just the night before it aired! Whew. Next!

We're working with CBS on an online auction of an outfit that Melinda wears in the April 25th episode. We'll get word out to you because the outfit is really gorgeous and Love looks beautiful in it and you'll be able to see the clip of the scene in which she wears it so beautifully while she's acting so brilliantly.

We've created a new Ghost Whisperer widget (thanks, Adi, man!) that we'll continue to refresh with new material and we hope that you'll be our Ghost Whisperer friend by putting it in your web world. We’ll be getting that to you ASAP.

And, finally, the Saturn give-away is coming quickly so make sure you check out the Haunted Highway, The Other Side webisodes and all the other fun things on our Ghost Whisperer: The Other Side II site. Go to http://cbs.com/ghost to register to win.

ANNNNNNNND... GHOST WHISPERER IS BACK ON THE AIR. Hope you tuned in to see “Home But Not Alone.” Melinda helps Ned's new girlfriend find peace after a death in her family. Once again, we feature red-hot rising star Christoph Sanders as Ned -- Delia's son. He does a great job stepping in to the role. And what a cute guy, huh? Camryn and Christoph share lots of great moments with tension and humor. We think this combo is a winner. Hope you agree.

The other fresh faces are Carly Schroeder (Lizzie McGuire), Hallee Hirsh (ER and JAG) and the adorable 12 year old Slade Pearce (October Road). Please know that there will be a lot more youth oriented scares coming down the pike in the next couple of episodes.

At the end of this episode, perhaps you recognized the fabulous voice of Gavin Rossdale (lead singer of Bush-- and husband to Gwen Stefani) in his new hit solo “Forever May You Run” (Interscope Records.) We really love this song and feel it's perfect for the end of the episode. Also featured is British sensation Duffy with her song “Mercy” (A & M Records) and independent artist Satin Missiles with “New Days Dawning.”

Would love to hear from you about how you feel about the music in the show. We are really trying to reach out to artists that we believe will excite the Ghost Whisperer fan base.

The other thing we're hoping you'll check out is the GHOST WHISPERER CLAYMATION VIDEO that we released online this week that teases the re-launch of Ghost Whisperer. Artist Miles Kalbach worked from his home in PA to create clay images that he shot frame-by-frame to make a simple lump of clay transform over and over again from one type of ghost to another. The claymation was inspired by the discovery of the underworld and spirit posession in the third season of Ghost Whisperer. And in case you're wondering the song is by CBS Records artist Senor Happy. If you don't check it out by going to http://youtube.com/cbsghostwhisperer, you're really missing out some something very special.

We've got a very unusual journey coming to you on next Friday night's episode -- the world of Ghost Whisperer literally gets turned upside down. If you're trolling online next week, you may discover that the spirit world has been very mischievious -- they're flipping things online. Every time we post something, it gets turned on its head. Give it a try and see if they can affect your online world. If so, tell us about it. Let us know what you discover and what you think is going on. Maybe you even have a solution or two on how to stop it.

Thanks for checking in this week and we look forward to connecting with you next week.

Kim and Ian

P.s. Have you gone onto the Ghost Whisperer Haunted Highway online site (that hosts Ghost Whisperer: The Other Side) to register to win the GM Saturn Astra that was featured on the webseries and is crossing over into the Ghost Whisperer Episode on May 2? If not, jump on over to the website http://cbs.com/ghost so you can register. We’ve worked with the Saturn and it’s way cool.

Hello, Ghost Whisperer fans! A little mid-week announcement....

Read Ghost Whisperer: From Shooting to Studio Delivery
GHOST WHISPERER is not on tonight. But starting next Friday, April 4th, we are re-launching the show with an all-new set of episodes. And because we’re so excited about going back on the air, we’ve got a few online surprises for you. Check in next Tuesday, and we’ll share the goodies.

Ian is directing on the back lot of Universal. One of the sets they used was a warehouse that was both part of the back lot and also an amazing creation of wood, metal and scaffolding by the Production Designer Mayling Cheng. Yesterday they shot a fantastic action sequence where Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) chases a ghost through a warehouse. It disappears and reappears and disappears again eventually revealing itself with a frightening surprise. Love was a great sport about running around all day long, and she even ran an hour on the treadmill early in the morning, just to loosen up. Be sure to watch Episode 315 when it airs on April 25th to check out our action star, Buffy the Ghost Whisperer!

After we shoot, of course, the film has to be edited, and the network has to sign off on it. We call that “locking the picture.” Then we spot the film with our composer—Mark Snow and his team of music mavens- as well as our sound experts at Smart Sound. We talk about the type of music needed for each scene and what sound effects are required to make the film come alive. Then we bring in the actors on a big stage where they “loop” their lines—replacing lines that got muddled during production or lines that need to be added to the picture because of a certain thing that needs to be clarified.

Then Juanita Diana Feeney our Post Producer works on the mix stage with our sound mix team—they spin thousands of dials and levers to achieve the perfect pitch for each element that we’ve dropped into the show. While all this is going on, we have the film running in a parallel track to finish it. That’s when the visual fx team works to create all those ghostly going-ons that you see during each episode: ghosts popping on and off the screen and moving things and blowing Melinda around. Then we marry the film to the sound track and play it back on a giant screen with spectacular speakers and make notes on what’s working and what’s not working.

Everyone involved will adjust to the notes that are given in this session and while that’s going on, we’re working with our online team to create cool compatible internet experiences that you can interact with before, during or after the broadcast of each episode. And everyone is working together as a team to get word out about the next upcoming episode. And that’s kind of how it works from shooting to delivering GHOST WHISPERER to CBS. Next time, we’ll talk about how we get an episode ready to shoot. I don’t know if this is interesting in any way, but thought we would explain what it’s like in GHOST WHISPERER production world.

Tune in to next Friday’s all-new episode on April 4th! Until then, let the spirits keep you dancing…

Read They say All Ghosts Lead to Grandview...
Hey everyone! Welcome back. Hope you all had a great week and you've just finished watching last night's GHOST WHISPERER episode -- "All Ghosts Lead To Grandview.” In this episode Melinda encounters a little girl who might have the same gift she does. It was an interesting journey that John Gray, PK Simonds and the GHOST WHISPERER writing staff decided to explore in Season 3. This story gave Melinda a chance to look inward to when she was a child.

Mary Ann Winkowski -- GHOST WHISPERER'S real life ghost buster -- has been enormously helpful by way of sharing with Jennifer Love Hewitt what it was like to be a young girl growing up with such an extraordinary gift. If you're interested in checking out more of what Mary Ann has to say, check out her website at http://www.maryannghostbuster.com/.

In last night's episode, Ignacio Serricchio (from “General Hospital)” returned as Melinda's brother Gabriel. Two other guest stars were Makenzie Vega and Anne Ramsey (“Mad About You” and “Six Feet Under”).

One of our favorite songs this season is Tegan and Sara's “Burn Your Life Down” (Vapor/Sire/Superclose Records). We intend to use more of Tegan and Sara's music in the future. The other two songs that you heard were “Burning the Lives” by Shadows Fall (Atlantic Records) and “I Will Be Waiting” by Kelly Sweet (Razor and Tie Records).

This week, we shot a scene for an upcoming episode -- a boat accident. We used the water tank on the Universal lot -- this tank has lots of history including some of the great water scenes in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE with Tom Cruise. For the GHOST WHISPERER scene, it had to take place at night so -- you guessed it -- the cast and crew shot through the night, racing against the clock to wrap before the sun came up. Mission accomplished!

We heard from an interesting guy, Scott Beveridge from THE OBSERVER-REPORTER, who by coincidence grew up in the small town next to Kim's -- he's got a blog-- http://scottbeveridge.blogspot.com that has been tracking GHOST WHISPERER recently for more clues about the underworld that exists under Grandview. Stand by Scott, there's more to come.

A little update on David Conrad -- Melinda's husband. David has been working in the Pittsburgh area to bring art back to the environment. He was able to get a gigantic flower painted on the side of a steel mill in honor of Andy Warhol -- in the area where Mr. Warhol grew up. And David's trying to get famous athletes to pose for a billboard that would be posted in the towns that they grew up in to honor the citizens of the town. We say, you go David, urban renewal -- any way you cut it -- is a great initiative.

Jennifer Love Hewitt was on the set yesterday -- shooting scenes for Episode 314. She asked us to give you her best and says she can't wait until April 4th -- the relaunch of GHOST WHISPERER Season 3. There will be a series of all-new original episodes being broadcast on CBS on Fridays at 8:00pm.

These episodes will be accompanied by some very cool interactive online events that we hope will give you some GHOST WHISPERER fun in between the broadcast of the new episodes.

Hey...have you been TWITTERED lately by GHOST WHISPERER?

Hope you'll check in with us next week for more ghost goodies.
