Regardless of what type of event the Oscars will be this year, one of the biggest annual parties for the kudosfest has been canceled in the face of the ongoing writers' strike. Vanity Fair, which typically hosts famous festivities, announced Tuesday that they're pulling the plug on this year's soiree.

VF spokesperson Beth Kseniak said that, although the WGA strike may end before the Oscars,"that doesn’t necessarily mean things are going to return to normal immediately." She added, "It’s been a bad couple of months for a lot of different people and it didn’t seem like the appropriate time to throw a big party."

Next year, perhaps, the mag will carry the torch once again. VF released a statement, saying: "We want to congratulate all of this year's nominees and we look forward to hosting our 15th Oscar party next year." — Anna Dimond

This is very strange. If there is indeed a deal imminent this weekend, why would VF cancel their party? By the time Oscar weekend rolls around, the strike will be a distant memory and VF will seem to be way out of the loop, wouldn't it? I wonder if they have any reason to believe the strike will not be settled by Oscar time, despite this week's rose-colored reports.

Maybe VF knows something that we don't. I have a feeling the strike won't be over any time soon.

Does anyone really care about oscar parties anyway?

Well all the waiters, waitresses, chefs, food suppliers, linen, cleanup people and various other service workers care. Along with the Limo drivers, couriers, and others who sell to the various parties.

I think Sandra Bernhard put it best back in the mid-80s when she referred to the magazine (on Late Night with David Letterman) as Vanity UNFair!
