As the Wrench Turns

Sometimes you really enjoy something despite all your attempts to not like it. One of those things for me is Car Talk on NPR. It's dumb, it's silly and I'm not even sure Tom and Ray Magliozzi know what the heck they're talking about. And I love it.

And, for reasons I'm still not sure of, they've managed to take their odd, small piece of radio goofiness and transported it to TV. Click & Clack's As the Wrench Turns is a screwball (or in their case, screwdriver) cartoon that's surreal, silly and funny.

In two episodes I've caught, they managed to cause a blackout on the Eastern seaboard AND create a pasta- powered car that causes a near war with Italy, all while getting in digs at their fellow NPR/PBS stablemates.

Again, it's silly, but it so good natured and so bizarre (Jim Lehrer of PBS's The News Hour and Carl Kasell of NPR voiced cameos) that you want to well, go along for the nutty ride.

Like the bumblebee, this shouldn't fly but somehow it does.

The episode about running a car on pasta is not so far fetched. Its called Gasification. There doing it at The Shipyard/Powerlabs in Berkeley. Any burnable material can be heated enough to create combustible gas that can be burned in an engine. Here is a link to such a gasification unit. Too bad the idea and the device was not shown in the episode. Some real education on alternate fuels could have been taught. A road rally of such vehicles called, "Escape from Berkeley" is planed on Oct. 10-13, 2008. Check it out.

Thanks for the commments, everybody! Sorry I forgot to mention that it was on PBS. I frankly wasn't expecting to like the show as much as I did and had to tell someone and well, this is the place for that :)

Botsmaker, I did not know about the pasta fueled cars. Frankly this cartoon wasn't the place for a serious discussion of anything.

It's really more like Rocky & Bullwinkle (those guys are built like them, now that I think about it) in that there's plenty of slapstick, but social/political commentary woven in.

Hi David! Sorry, I'm a couple days late! It is good to "see" you around here and I hope the job is going well.

I've heard the Car Talk guys a few times, and I read about their new show, but I haven't seen it yet. I'll admit that I know nothing about cars, but the guys are funny so I'll have to check out the show sometime.
