Play Ball! Or Better Yet, Pure Boru!
Red Sox Nation extends its borders from the AL East to the Far East as the World Series champions (96-66 in 2007) stop in Japan for a two-game set with the Oakland As (76-86) to officially open the 2008 regular season (Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday, March 26, 6 am/ET, replayed at 2 pm/ET, ESPN2).
Expect the boisterous Tokyo Dome crowds (that previously welcomed the Cubs and Mets in 2000 and Yankees and Devil Rays in 2004) to be in full roar for every homuran hit by slugger David Ortiz or sutoraiku thrown by ex-Japanese League star Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tuesday’s scheduled starter for Boston against Oakland’s Joe Blanton. Fellow second-year Sox pitcher Hideki Okajima is another local favorite available out of the bullpen for manager Terry Francona. Gary Thorne and Steve Phillips call the action. —Roger Leister
