Ex-Major League Baseball pitcher and ESPN analyst Rick Sutcliffe has been diagnosed with colon cancer. ESPN just released the following statement:

"A routine test during a physical revealed that Sutcliffe has a treatable and curable form of colon cancer. He will undergo chemotherapy and surgery over the next few months and he is hoping to make a healthy comeback later this year.

'I deeply appreciate the support of the ESPN family and my family and friends around the country,' said Rick Sutcliffe."

Sutcliffe retired from baseball in 1994 and joined ESPN in 1999. He was a three-time MLB All-Star and won the Cy Young Award (given to baseball's top pitcher) in 1984.

I had encountered Mr. Sutcliffe a few times back when he played for the Chicago Cubs. He was not quite a regular at the bar I worked at back then but he was there a few times. No matter what, he was always a friendly, cordial and a complete gentleman. Many of today's athletes could take lessons from him.

I hope for a speedy recovery for one of Sport's true legends and a down to earth good human being.

Heres to you, Rick.
