The View to Unveil New Cohost on Sept. 10

It may have been Whoopi Goldberg's first day as the new View moderator, but the show's powers-that-be, Barbara Walters and fellow executive producer Bill Geddie, were already thinking ahead this morning.

Walters tells TV Guide that the long-vacant fifth seat will be filled "very soon," definitely before Elisabeth Hasselbeck's maternity leave starts in early November. Though they won't disclose the identity of their top choice, they did reveal that the new host will be a woman who has guest-hosted in the past. "It is someone you will know; we're not trying out any more," Geddie says. "Nobody need send me tapes. This is it, it's happening soon."

So let's welcome Sherri… or Kathy… or… who knows?! We’ll keep you posted. —Reporting by Ileane Rudolph

UPDATE: Barbara Walters subsequently announced on Wednesday's show that the new panelist — still unnamed — would start Monday, Sept. 10.

Either both Sherri or Kathy will be great addition, though we don't need another christian in the mix.

Saying that, I think Barbara is scared of Kathy.

We don't need another Christian? Why? This is supposed to be a show about all different views.. not 4 vs 1. I'd personally like to see a Conservative added.. but someone who is intelligent and funny, and won't be overpowered by the other personalities on the show.

I think the View really needs to think about calling it a day. It is no longer relevant or even interesting really. They used to do real meaningful news pieces that were very relevant and important to women. Now they are more like televised gossip rags with little relevance, integrity or meaning. Time to move on Barbara your time, energy and talent are much better spent else where.

Oh and either choice - Sherri or Kathy would be wrong I think. That would make too many stand up comics and not enough serious people that women can relate to.

I hope it's not Sherri. I used to think she was funny, but ever since she started guest hosting, I really began to dislike her.

If they do choose her, I won't watch.

Not that I'm watching now....

I have been searching for over an hour to find a site to respond to what Whoopie said on "The View" today. As a native of the South, I am appalled by Whoopie's characterization of dog fighting being part of the culture of the South. My family's heritage goes deep in this part of the country, and I've never known anyone who engages in this horrible activity. I also take issue with her saying that Vick is from the deep South, something I suspect all of Virginia would contest. "The View" was never "must see" TV for me, but now forget about it!

I don't care who the new temporary co-host is. After Whoopi I won't be watching again. I'm from the South and contrary to her stereotype, we don't as a group think dogfighting is ok. Honestly I like her and thought she would be a great addition. Now I can't look at her without thinking she's a moron.

I've lived in the "real" deep South my entire life, and I have to agree with those of you who took exception to Ms. Goldberg's ignorant comments about dogfighting in the South. I'm sure it goes on, but it's not part of some Southern tradition. Most Southern men I know believe "dog is man's best friend."

I was tempted to write a complaint to The View, but I'm afraid they will see it as a sign of interest in the show. And I don't want to do anything that might encourage Whoopi to open her big mouth again.

I'm not from the South but I knew immediately after Whoopi's statement she had completely over-generalized. Whether or not a great deal of dogfights happen in the "deep" South or Vick grew up believing it was okay, the fact remains dogfighting isn't a geographically isolated phenomenon. I wish Whoopi could have at least stressed that with her comment. I don't think its worth boycotting the show but to each his own I guess.

I think Sherri would be good. I loved her on Raymond and Less Than Perfect.

So is Whoopi saying it's okay because it's what he knows? She needs to stop giving him permission to mess up.

Plus, it's obvious he isn't really sorry, only sorry he got caught.

As I posted (I think on one of Ausiello's blogs) several weeks ago, Sherri Shepherd sent out an email to her fans that she has been chosen as the fifth co-host. I was wondering why no one picked up on that. ?<img border=">

Another conservative is exactly what that show needs. I didn't think it could get worse than Rosie...but all they did is replace her with something worse. What's worse than an ultra liberal lesbian loudmouth? An ultra liberal lesbian loudmouth who's black. I mean come on, is she honestly DEFENDING dogfighting? It's culturally acceptable???? Some people in the south are brought up to believe that blacks should be hung from the nearest tree...does that mean we should excuse murder in those cases? Get real Whoopi!!! NEXT!
