Stephen Colbert Loses Presidential Bid

Stephen Colbert’s presidential campaign appears to be over. The South Carolina Democratic Party decided against allowing the Comedy Central’s faux political pundit to be on the ballot for the state’s presidential primary in late January.

Colbert paid the $2,500 fee to enter the race as a Democrat (he chose not to run on the Republican line because the party required a $35,000 fee), but party officials had the right to reject him if they determined his candidacy wasn’t viable. Colbert has said he doesn't want to be president — he only wanted to run for president in South Carolina, his native state.

Even though Colbert showed up in some presidential polls, it now looks like the gag has run its course. —Reporting by Stephen Battaglio

BOOOOOO!!!!!!! Colbert's presidential run had the makings of one of the greatest satires in entertainment history. I enjoyed every second of it and will enjoy some zesty nacho Cheese Doritos in mourning.

Does the Democratic Party think this move will stop South Carolina's favorite son from winning the race for president? This move just shows how scared they are of Stephen Colbert's bid for President. Name on the ballot or no, the Democratic and Republican parties are going to discover there is a candidate to be reckoned with: Stephen T. Colbert.

Obviously the SC Democratic party has zero sense of humor.

He can still be a write-in candidate. I for one will be writing him in come November 2008.

zinger314: Yeah right, like the Republican party would have ever let Colbert run! Ha, you kid yourself.

I think the SC Democratic Party was only worried about the embarrassment of having Colbert finish ahead of Kucinich, Gravel, Richardson, Dodd & Biden. What would it have said about their candidacies if Colbert earned more votes?
