Patrick Dempsey Says McDreamy and Meredith May Call It Quits

Not only does it look like the writers’ strike will cap the fourth season of Grey’s Anatomy at only 11 episodes, but Patrick Dempsey says the relationship that has kept viewers on the edge of their seats for three years may have finally reached its expiration date.

"The next couple of episodes are going to be completely different with what happens with Meredith and Derek," Dempsey revealed to TV Guide exclusively while he promoted his new film, Enchanted, in L.A. on Nov. 4. "I’m looking forward to that change and that movement."

After three years Dempsey is ready for his character to move on — potentially to the new character brought in as his love interest. "I just want the characters to continue to grow and to work things out realistically," Dempsey says. "Derek and Meredith’s relationship has gone as far as it can go. I don’t think it’s going to go unless she commits to marrying him or goes into therapy and starts working on herself. We’ll have a cliff-hanger with this last show and there will be a resolve that seems to be permanent." — Reporting by Carita Rizzo

no point in watching this show again then when the strike is over. it's better just to not bother with this anymore.

You know, I don't think people are interested in Derek with Meredith. Meredith's character could possibly solider on with Derek--but Derek without Meredith, dating/marrying someone else with no chance of reconciliation? It sounds pretty lethal.

Way to go Shonda! You have literally burned down what was possibly the best show on t.v. You set up GIZZARD which is the most revolting couple on t.v. and break up Meredith and Derek? WOW..you must be proud. Let's hope you salvage enough of your credibility to make CROSSROADS 2. Britney sucks as much as you..you should have a great time together..two losers!

Actually, I look forward to seeing Derek move on. Its so emasculating to see him yearn for someone like Meredith who won't embrace him and appreciate him. I much prefer Alex and Ada. Man, they were so good together! So much chemistry.

Cheers to seeing Derek move on and have sparks with someone else.

Why the hate?

I think the break-up offers all sorts of possibilities. Think of how uncomfortable they're going to be with each other for a while. Sounds like fun to me!

Although - I can't stand Gizzie - ready for that to go away!

Finally. I am so tired of Derek waiting around for Meredith to get over her issues. Don't get me wrong I still want them to ultimately end up together I just think Derek needs to move on and stop waiting for Meredith. Hopefully seeing him move on will make her realize how much she wants a permanent relationship with him.

GOOD NEWS!
This flatlined couple is what caused me to stop watching the show. Her 'poor me' demeanor/dialog/body language and his 'mine don't stink' attitude together were the biggest negative to the show.

Patrick - you and Mer didn't keep me on the edge of anything except the kitchen sink - get over yourself; you're NOT all that.

Give HER some Prozac; give him a reality check; give the fans a break and let these two try to salvage themselves as characters so the show doesn't continue to tank. The show has definitely jumped the shark! Wake me when it's over.

They won't be the only ones who'll call it quits. I will too!!!!

I'm gradually weaning myself away from this show already. Who knows? I may not be the only one..

I find enjoyment in this show, because I haven't gotten myself all wrapped up in one couple, and it's not dependent that Meredith and Derek have to be together. I've done that with another show, and it drives you nuts when it doesn't work out; it's so much easier to watch it without getting attached.

Meredith has issues and needs to work through them, and Derek has done a real number on her, which he needs to work through, too, actually.

Stop watching, or just let it go!

The one thing I have gotten wrapped up in is my desire to see the end of George and Izzie. It's just icky, and needs to stop now. I'm hoping they realize the love they think is romantic is more brother and sister love, because that's what they've seemed more like to me -- brother and sister instead of some great romance burning under the surface since day one. If that was the case, then to me that makes the whole Denny storyline and Izzie's love for Denny a farce. The whole George and Izzie thing is what really, really ruined season 3 for me. But if they have to continue, I'll just fast forward through them and enjoy the rest of my Grey's.

Hallelujiah!

Meredith is the one person on the show that I cannot stand...she is SUCH a whiner. Hopefully Derek will move on - he's hot and deserves someone equally as exciting.

THIS SUCKS BIG TIME. I have been a devoted fan of Grey's since day 1, but I think this has really turned me off to the show. I don't know what the writers are thinking, but this is NOT what the fans want. They want the chemistry between Mer and Der to evolve into something pernament - Since this season started, I have flip-flopped back and forth - watch or not watch - well I think this solves my dilemna - no more Grey's for me and I hate that because I have grown to love the characters, but the writers are putting them into roles that truthfully SUCK. The "gizzie" relationship - yuk - now this - forget Grey's for me.
