Nicole Richie Serves 82 Mins. of 96-Hour Jail Sentence

A "very cooperative" Nicole Richie has done her time — all 82 minutes of it. Kerri Webb of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department tells TV Guide, "We want to be sure" to emphasize how "cooperative" Richie was, offering the statement: "Today, August 27, 2007 ,at 3:15 pm, Ms. Nicole Camille Richie reported to the Century Region Detention Facility to surrender herself following her July 27, 2007, sentencing to serve 96 hours in the Los Angeles County Jail."
Richie was then promptly released at 4:37 pm.
The Simple Life star and expectant mother was accompanied by her attorney, Shawn Chapman Holly and her boyfriend (and babydaddy) Joel Madden.
Richie received her second DUI conviction for her December 11, 2006, arrest, when she was found driving the wrong way on a freeway, and under the influence of drugs. Richie had to complete her jail service by September 28. She was also fined more than $2,000 and ordered to attend 21 days of alcohol education. — Reporting by N.F. Mendoza

WHY do they even bother?! If she's not even going to be in long enough for the papers to be processed, it's just a joke.

OMG! What a horrible ordeal for her. 72 minutes? How did she make it?!?
I'll bet Paris is pissed. So am I, for that matter--because she's a "celebrity", she gets away with driving under the influence and serves less time in jail than it takes to watch a movie.
Apparently Matt re-did the math to discover that it was 82 minutes. *So* much worse.

I do agree that "celebrities" do seem to get away with a lot, however, if you know anything about the criminal law system this truly happens ALL OF THE TIME.

But was it necessary? That was a complete waste of time.

Whether or not it happens all the time, and regardless who it happens to, it's a waste of my tax dollars!

Happens all the time? Hah! I have a friend who is serving 10 YEARS probation for a DUI. I have another who got probation for her first one, and served over a year for her second one, so don't give me "happens all the time". The California courts SHOULD be handing out stiff penalties and teaching these rich do-nothings that they can't buy their way out of everything - oh, wait, obviously they can.

I'm sure that really taught her a lesson and every other celebrity out there as well. What happened to making examples out of these people who think they are above the law? Just shows others that they are above the law and what a good example to show our kids who we try to teach things to and explain that there are consequences. Not much you can say when they see that someone like her is getting a little over an hour and one site reports didn't even get to a jail cell.

You think that's bad. Lindsay Lohan did a lot worse and she's apparently only getting a day in jail and it probably won't even be a whole day, either.
This whole thing kind of gives you new respect for Paris Hilton who actually did hard time compared to these two. But Hilton only got hard time after public outrage at her easy treatment forced the law to give it to her.

It's really sad to see how spoiled, rich, overgrown children can continue to make a mockery of what serves as a system of justice to the rest of our society. How exactly does 72 minutes of "cooperation" count as 96 hours of jail time?

Wow. Only 82 minutes. AND she did her time in the future! She is special...

I'm sure she has learned her lesson by NOT doing her sentence. Right after the baby is born, I'm sure she'll go out and get hammered and drive her car down the highway the wrong way again. Why not, she doesn't have to suffer ANY consequences. Ah, to be rich and not have a care in the world!
What the heck! Michael Vick can torture and kill animals and still be able to play football in the future. Why aren't Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson marching down the street demanding that he be fired like they did over Don Imus and his words. Seems to me that murdering animals is a worse crime then saying ugly words. You know.....sticks and stones folks, sticks and stones!

You can't really use anecdotal evidence to disprove statistics. Especially when DUI laws and sentencing schemes vary by state. This article took out any mention of the fact that this was a typical result for similar sentences, as was being reported elsewhere. DUIs are rarely treated harshly, that's just a sad fact that needs to be addressed by the legislatures who make the laws and sentencing guidelines.
