Nicole Richie Pleads Guilty to DUI

Nicole Richie, 25, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence this morning and was sentenced to serve 96 hours in jail.

Richie was credited for six hours of time served for her post arrest jail
stint, meaning she’ll actually serve 90 hours, says Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's office.

Richie was fined $2,048 and ordered to undertake 21 days of an alcohol education course. She must complete her 90 hours by September 28.

The Simple Life star was arrested December 11 after police say she drove the wrong way on a California highway. Robison also says Richie was given three years probation and “was admonished
by the judge that she must stay clean and cannot be arrested for any other offense. If she violates probation in any way, she’ll face more jail, and that will be up to a year.” This was Richie’s second DUI conviction.

It has not been determined whether she will serve her sentence in the Los Angeles County or City jail. “We expect she won’t go to county, she’ll go to
some city facility,” says Robison. But that could only happen if there's space. City jail, which inmates pay for themselves, is considered less severe than the county facility. “If you can afford it,” most people, confirms Robison, “will opt for a city jail,” even though “she will have to serve her full time because they don’t have the overcrowding issue that County does.” Overcrowding often allows for an early release.

Richie, who is rumored to be pregnant, entered the Glendale, Calif. courthouse holding the arm of her boyfriend, musician Joel Madden. Executives at E! Entertainment, which produces The Simple Life, would not comment on the sentencing, but did tell TV Guide that "no decisions have been made" regarding the series' renewal. —Reporting by N.F. I've never really thought much of Nicole, however I really think she's handling this whole thing so much more low key, and for that I have to give credit where credit is due. Paris, take notes.

It appears that Nichole is a Paris Hilton wannabe. She seems to want to look like Paris, act like Paris; be Paris! Between the two of them though, Nichole is the one I enjoy the most on their "dumb blond" (I forgot the name) tv show. Nichole is less shallow, and more funny!

I actually think a four day sentence is trifling. But it will certainly enforce her sobriety during that time. It saddened me to see Paris surrounded by people who insisted she was being wronged. The biggest problem with our legal system is that people are not given lighter sentences when they own up and are humbled and show signs of having grown somehow once having owned up to what they have done. I don't know what good the time served does when they spend the entire time in denial about the reality of the situation.

Paris Hilton was driving on a suspended license and received a more severe punishment than Nicole Richie's second DUI conviction.

And I thought I was mad when Paris had to serve a meager 23 days in jail ...

A 90-hour incarceration is monkey crap. Heck, I am a pansy and even I could serve 90 hours in prison.

This is pathetic. The justice system is all screwed up.

Oh what money and popularity will do for a personality. You still have to go quite a way to beat O.J.

Paris Hilton was driving on a suspended license and received a more severe punishment than Nicole Richie's second DUI conviction.

Let's get the facts straight. Paris Hilton was caught driving on a suspended license - not once but twice! The first time she got nothing. Nada. A warning. She also failed to enroll in a court ordered alcohol education program in violation of her probation.

If Paris hadn't demonstrated such obvious contempt for the court system, she could have walked away with a less severe penalty than Nicole. Let's not compare apples and oranges.

None of this dismisses the severity of Nicole's actions, but it does demonstrate what a little humility can do.

Cariche, your idol isn't going to jail because of haters, but because she committed a crime and got lucky she didn't kill someone. All the celebrities who seem to think its hip to get behind the wheel when they've been drinking have been similarly lucky.

Hopefully, she'll lay off the sauce when she gets out because alcohol is more damaging to an unborn baby than a week in jail is.

I'm guessing your a teen who thinks celebrity and pregnancy mean giving someone who commits a crime a free pass. Here's hoping you're never on the wrong end of a celebrity drunk drive and learn the hard way what their irresponsible and selfish behavior can do to someone who gets on the wrong end of a drunk driving accident.
