New View Cohost Whoopi Goldberg on Star and Rosie: "We're Friends"

Whoopi Goldberg was all smiles backstage at The View, several moments after the not-so-surprise announcement that she’s the ABC chat show’s long-awaited new moderator. The comedian tells TV Guide she “felt safe” in the warm embrace of her new colleagues.

She’s equally accepted by ex-Viewers. Goldberg revealed that the day before her formal announcement, Star Jones Reynolds, who left the show after a bit of nastiness, sent her flowers. “We’re friends,” says Goldberg. “She was really excited and she said, ‘You should do this, this is you. Go for it.’”

Though Goldberg hadn’t yet heard from Rosie O’Donnell, the new host said she’s been reading O’Donnell’s blog “and the great stuff she’s written about me. What’s better than that? Nobody’s angry, nobody’s nasty, nobody’s unhappy.”

Now that Goldberg’s filled the fourth seat, how about the fifth? View executive producer Bill Geddie says they’re definitely still looking for someone and they’re talking to several people, including Kathy Griffin and presumptive favorite Sherri Shepherd. So what’s up with Shepherd? We hear she’s still on top of the list, but there’s some money issues keeping them from sealing the deal. — Reporting by Ileane Rudolph

Whoopi, good choice.

That is too bad to hear that "money issues" are delaying the finalization of Sherri Shepard as a permanent panelist. It sounds like she is holding out for more money than the show/ABC want to give her. I love her and really hope they seal a deal with her, but she needs to get real and realize she is not that big a name to be holding out.

As for Whoopi, I was a little resistent with the initial idea of her being the moderator. But after watching her today, you can see that the other girls like her and that she will be a calm voice among all of the screaming on the show. I'm looking forward to seeing what she she brings to "The View".

Good luck, Whoopi! And I hope to hear an announcement soon that Sherri will be onboard soon as well!

My choice would've been Sherri, but hopefully, she could be the fifth.

I used to love Whoopi, but her act is kind of tired. She's the type of comedian who still says the same old stuff she said 20 years ago. I hope she works of sprucing up her "routine" by the fall.

Another concern I have is that three of the cohosts are now over 50. There's a huge gap in there (31-51) which is unrepresented. The whole point of The View was to have a diversity of backgrounds, culture and age. 30s and 40s are a tough demographic to be ignoring, considering how conscious of that networks are.

I like Sherri and think that she would do great. I have to say that I LOVE Kathy Griffin and she would really shake the show up. Too bad they couldn't take both of them. If Kathy was on, I would definitely watch. Otherwise, I don't think that I will start watching more than occasionally.

Actually, Sweeetpea, you may be onto something...

Barbara is usually off two days a week, so why not have Sherri and Kathy each on once a week. I think it would be great if they could find a way to keep them both around. I enjoy them both, too. They are both hilarious (but in different ways), and neither are afraid to speak their minds.

I somehow don't think Whoopi on "The View" is going to work. Maybe I just don't find her as funny as the rest of the world seems to think she is (I've never actually laughed at anything she has ever said or done). And there is probably just too much ego there for her to accept being one person among five, as was the case with Rosie. Will Whoopi really be happy sharing the stage with so many others?
I think the initial warm fuzzines everyone is feeling right now will not last very long.

I have nothing against Whoopi, really. But as someone mentioned somewhere else on this site, we've gone from having a 2 journalists (Viera and Ling) and a lawyer (before Star went wacko, she was actually a good voice), a comedian and Barbara. Now we're at 2 or three comedians, a former Survivor (what other credentials does Hasselback have??) and Barbara.

That's sad.

As far as Sherri's monehy issues, since she'll have to relocate to NYC, I can see where she'd want the best deal possible, since she'd have to fly to LA for auditions/jobs, unless she's planning on suspending the rest of her career.

Please God no Kathy Griffin as the fifth seat on The View. There is nothing funny or entertaining about her. She is a classic attention seeker and the couple of times I have seen her co-host it is all about her, she cannot bear to give up the spot light, take things seriously or ask an intelligent question. She may be a very funny stand up comedienne but she is not co-host material. Besides they now have 2 stand up comedienne on the panel I think they need someone from a different background.

I'm glad she feels safe. She acted cowed in one of the few shows I've seen since Rosie left. Elisabeth was dominating the conversation (during that show)with that obnoxious little voice of hers and Barbara talked about Paris H. and her (B's) star on the walk of fame--for the five-millioneth time.

Whoopi is a good choice, quite an improvement over that obnoxious O'Donnell. Now I will watch "The View" again,I refused to when that fat, bitch was on there, she is the most irritating person on the planet.

I DON'T CARE FOR KATHY HOWEVER.........I DON'T THINK THAT IT IS A VERY GOOD SIGN THAT SHERRIE IS ALREADY HAVING $ PROBLEMS SIGNING.........WHERE THERE IS SMOKE THERE USUALLY IS FIRE..........

I am very happy to hear that Whoopie is coming aboard. Whoopie will add some flavor to the show. I hope Sherry decides to join the other ladies because she will only add to the others.

Who cares? I'm so over all these ladies and their melodrama. Barbara Walters has lost her credibilaty and her integrity with this show after a lifetime of news worthy interviews, she blows her golden years with this catty show. All in the name of ratings and moolah.
