NBC to Drop Fred Thompson in Reruns

NBC announced that it plans to stop scheduling Law & Order episodes that include Fred Thompson in his role as District Attorney Arthur Branch as of Sept. 1. The network doesn't want to run afoul of the government provision that requires broadcasters to treat legally qualified political candidates equally when it comes to selling or giving away airtime.

Thompson is expected to soon become an official candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. Further Law & Order airings with Thompson could put NBC on the hook to provide equal time to other candidates. The equal time requirement does not apply to programming on national cable networks. However, if and when Thompson becomes an official candidate, NBC will decide whether to voluntarily pull his episodes from cable outlets as well.

Thompson appeared in 115 episodes of Law & Order. — Reporting by Stephen Battaglio

They'll have to go all the way back to episodes featuring Diane Wiest if they wanna do reruns. That's OK with me since a lot of those eppys also had the delicious Angie Harmon (slurp).

interesting. I'm with you, Ranger99, but at least it will save us from watching that "equal air time".

A collection is being taken up to help Elisabeth Rohm with her upcoming rent payments.

I agree it's a ridiculous rule but if it spares me from having to see the Fred Thompson-Elizabeth Rohm reruns I'm fine with it. Too bad it doesn't apply to the TNT reruns as well.

Just wondering. When Arnold ran for Governor of CA, did the networks stop running his movies?

It's a twisted interpretation of "equal time". How many Republican primary voters are going to see Arthur Branch doing his 4 or 5 lines and think, "Yeah, I love that guy's thinking on farm subsidies, student loans, health care, energy independence, and trade policy. Gotta vote for him. This fictional DA will know what to do about Iraq."

Yes - he has gotten a bit of grief lately for what people call his "trophy wife".
