Matthew Fox Stands up to Columbia Seniors

Matthew Fox had the last word when it came to protests from Columbia college seniors over the decision to have the Lost star speak at this year's Class Day. "Some of you might be thinking, 'We got this guy, and Harvard got Bill Gates,'" Fox, an alum of the school, said at the pre-commencement event May 16. "Well there's an important distinction between myself and Mr. Gates: I actually graduated college."

Fox — who earned a B.A. in economics from Columbia in 1989 — played wide receiver in a football game his senior year that broke Columbia's record-setting, 44-game losing streak.

Not everyone was disappointed to see Fox, sporting a light blue graduation gown, as he addressed a crowd of 1,060 graduates and their familes. During his speech, some Lost fans shouted out, "Go Jack!"

Fox didn't slip any Lost season finale scoop into his speech, but he did leave the graduates with a few words of wisdom. "Live for your own passion, not the aspirations or expectations others have for you... as of tomorrow, you are the authors of your own life.' — Reporting by Erin S. Medley

Bravo, Matthew. I'd have you speak at my commencement, anyday.

OK, you're disappointed you got President Bush as your speaker. He, at least, could spell "speech" correctly. (Or use the spell-check button.)

As for Matthew Fox. Good for him! I'd take a commencement speech by him any day, too.

Liz985: Interesting that one misplaced letter invalidates my thought and somehow renders me unintelligent. (As a side note, I wouldn't be so quick to assume that the Prez could spell "speech," considering his penchant for making up words.)

He was Governor Bush at the time, and the speech wasn't very good. I would take a Matthew Fox speech anyday.

I think Matthew Fox was a good choice, at my college graduation they got Goldie Hawn, she was fun and hilarious!

Sorry, but you left yourself wide open for that comment. And with your second posting, you affirmed what I thought your first posting was alluding to, i.e. that George Bush isn't an intelligent man and deserves dismissive comments such as yours. The fact that you had a glaring mispelling in your original post was just very ironic and humorous.

Well, if we are comparing graduation speakers, I win - I got Bob Barker! Didn't give out any cars, though, just dumb diplomas :) And he rocked the day by suggesting that all the guys find a woman who is smarter than they are, because that makes life so much better.

Liz985: Seriously. Not. Worth. It.

But isn't it good to know that even people with glaring spelling errors love Matthew Fox! His fan base is wide and multitudinous.

Liz985: I'm amused that you misspelled "misspelling" - sorry, couldn't resist.

I think I would have enjoyed his whole speech.

Anyway, what were the Columbia students upset about?? Fox is one the biggest tv stars right now, and making his way into movies, and not to mention GRADUATED college, from THAT college and seems to have made history with their football team. I can't believe how ungrateful some people are.
