John Stamos Speaks Out: "I Am Not David Hasselhoff"
John Stamos by Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage.com
June 25 and 26 were definitely not g’days for John Stamos. The ER star exhibited bizarre behavior during an Australian publicity tour late last month. Stamos spoke to TV Guide to set the record straight on what happened.
On June 25 he appeared to slur his way through an interview with an Australian newspaper. The next day, while appearing on the popular Aussie talk show Mornings with KerriAnne, he rambled through the interview and made a series of obscene remarks and gestures.
Stamos arrived in Australia on June 21, at the end of a whirlwind trip that included stops in New York and New Orleans, a vacation in Greece with his former Full House costar Bob Saget, a publicity stop in Japan, and a layover in Cairo before finally landing Down Under. “By the time I got to Australia my body was so out of whack,” Stamos tells TV Guide. He went to a Sydney strip club his first night there. “I couldn't sleep, so I went by,” he says. “I stopped to sign autographs and I had a Guinness beer.”
A few days later he was still fighting jet lag so “I took a sleeping pill at 5 in the morning, Ambien,” he says. He was so disoriented when he did the newspaper interview, he says, “I did not know what continent I was on.” Still, because he couldn’t sleep, he continued to take Ambien, leading to the disastrous appearance on Mornings with KerriAnne.
One thing the 43-year-old Stamos wants to make clear is that he was not drunk. “I was not drinking. I did not drink either morning,” he says. “I do not have an alcohol problem. I am not David Hasselhoff. This is not a pattern.”
Stamos, who admits "it was a disaster," says he’s learned his lesson from this episode. “Now I know that Ambien is an eight-hour sleeping pill so if you take it, you better get eight hours' sleep,” he says. “Do not take it at 5 in the morning. I do not take it every night, only when traveling."
He also hopes his reputation is not tarnished, especially Down Under. “I really do feel bad. I hope Australia will give me a chance to redeem myself,” he says. “I love Australia. My plan is still to retire there.” — Reporting by Mary Murphy

Ah ha! So he's not so much David Hasslehoff, he's more like Sylvester Stallone. I wonder where he obtained this "Ambien" stuff. From its website it seems to be USA/Prescription only. I don't know if it's approved for use here in Oz.

Of course I have no idea whether the Ambien story is true, but I do know from several family members who have taken Ambien at various times that the instructions are you take it as you are going to bed and never unless you are able to sleep for 8 hours as it's a sedative hypnotic. One person said that they literally had to be on their way to bed while taking it. It's pretty widely prescribed in the US as something you can take periodically for insomnia. If he took one and then didn't go to sleep, that could explain some pretty strange behavior. As for whether that's what really happened, he's the only one who knows, but I hope it's true.

I loved the burn on Hasselhoff. The man is a alcoholic pig who needs to be put down.
Whether or not the Ambien story is true, I am inclined to believe him. John Stamos does not have a long record of obscene behavior or questionable actions. If Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, or Britney Spears told the same story, I would have a very different view.

Did he just Hassle the Hoff?
Like WalkThruFire said, he's not one to be known for partying and getting drunk, so there's no reason not to believe him.

My husband takes it every night to be able to sleep, and if he doesn't go to sleep right away.... he's drunk!

What a frickin' jerk. Why can't he just apologize, not use the occasion to insult/humiliate David Hasselhoff. I lost the tiny speck of respect I had for the talentless loser, Stamos. No wonder his supermodel wife left him.

Live and learn, John. No Ambien without 8 hours sleep. No backhand dissing of down-on-their-luck actors. Lessons learned. Here's one fan who understands and forgives.

1) Ambien does do some weird stuff and affect people. My friend used to sleep walk, cook, clean her house, etc and never once remembered doing anything but sleeping. 2) John is not known for any unacceptable behavior, even while touring... 3) His EX left because her career was more important than starting a family.

sounds like Steve is a big Hass fan. Ok, first of all, how many negative stuff do you hear about David Hasselhoff? And compare that to John Stamos- this is the first bad thing I've ever heard about him. I've heard that John is one of the nicest people in Hollywood.

My mom takes Ambien for her fibromyalgia and 30 mins after she takes it she slurs her words (most of them) and gives a high/drunk appearance. I mean it's not THAT bad, but it's obvious she's taken something and if John took them and had the same effect on him as they do to my mother, then it's VERY possible to slur your words. Mightily!!!

Seems to me David Hasselhoff doesnt need any help whatsoever in with insults/humiliations. He does a good job of that on his own.

He only said that because other people were comparing him to the Hoff. So its the publics fault really.
