Harvey Keitel Out of Running for Criminal Minds Lead
Harvey, we hardly knew ya. Just hours after word broke that Harvey Keitel was thisclose to signing a contract with Criminal Minds for the spot left vacant by the disappearing Mandy Patinkin, sources say the deal is no longer on the table. This makes Keitel the latest big name to be stricken from the show’s most-wanted list. Others include Geena Davis, Michael Keaton and Bob Hoskins. Despite the suspense surrounding the search, we hear the show is still chugging along fine without the replacement. The first three episodes are already in the can (with Patinkin’s absence being dealt with in the season-opener). This means that whoever the new character is, he/she (and we suspect it’s a he) won’t be appearing until later in the season. — Reporting by Jonathan Small

I hope all of you Harvey bashers are happy!
Now can we contact David James Elliot already and sign him please!

Why hasn't anyone thought of or mentioned William Devane to replace Mandy Patinkin...I think he would be a perfect replacement and addition to the show.

How about Ally Walker or Michael T. Weiss? I really miss the Profiler and Pretender. Plus both coming with profile acting experience.

Andre Braugher<---great choice!!
Lets see who else. Craig T Nelson? I've always liked him. Michael Madsen?

Craig T. Nelson has played cops before, he may not be anxious to do that again same thing with Braugher. Ally Walker does nothing but scrunch her face up when she's trying to be serious although I did like Profiler. Michael T. Weiss wouldn't be bad but like David James Elliott that's too close to Thomas Gibson. Someone older definitely. I like Madsen too but he always comes off as kind of gruff; more like he'd punch your lights out first and then talk to you. I like the idea of Lance Henriksen or Michael Moriarty or even Megan Gallagher. Of course, since they seem to be doing okay w/o a guru type they could just leave the cast as is.

William Devane would be an excellent choice! He's the perfect blend of older eye-candy (if he's as good looking as I remember from that Mel Gibson movie with Maria Bello) and I think he has the right amount of snarkiness.

There was a late season 2 episode that got shelved because of V Tech I belive. Patinkin would be in that. I think it's the season premiere now. If they shoot a new scene to insert in there that expalins an upcoming abscense that would make sense.

No, the show with the episode that got shelved (reminiscent of V Tech) was Bones, not Criminal Minds.
Good Grief, why can't they find someone? Do they even really need someone? Thomas Gibson is awesome, he can surely lead the show better than any candidate mentioned so far.

I read that earlier on the blog it was exclusively released to. He would have been good but oh well.

I think part of explaining Gideon's absence was set up by last season's finale. Wasn't the Paget Brewster character being asked by a superior to get soem dirt on Gideon? Maybe the show's producers already knew something.
One possibility is to have Thomas Gibson get a promotion to Gideon's position. Then have someone take his place - even giving a person on the team a promotion. Even thought she is new, the Paget Brewster character seems to be the best qualified person to do that. Both those moves would create new team dynamics and new storylines.
Whether they replace Gideon specifically or give Thomas Gibson a promotion, I do believe they need one more person in the ensemble.

The producers are aiming too high for the replacement. Why don't they go after someone who doesn't have a job.
