In the Works: ABC's New Marlowe Is a Go

Inching their way to your television screen:

• ABC has granted pilot orders to Marlowe, a contemporary take on Raymond Chandler's hard-boiled private eye, and Pushing Daisies, a romantic drama about a man who can bring dead people back to life, just by touching them.

• NBC has ordered a pilot for Zip, a comedy about a grifter who angles to live the good life with his kids in Beverly Hills.

• Sci Fi has teamed with Sex and the City creator Darren Star and scribe Mike Werb (Face/Off) on a crime series about four convicts outfitted with technologically enhanced bodies (Pam Anderson is already in the casting office) and sent to work for a covert wing of the government, says Reuters.

• Lifetime has given a series pickup and set a summer debut for State of Mind, starring Lili Taylor as a therapist.

I like Lili Taylor. I hope the quality of the show is on par with her wonderful acting ability.

As a major noir geek, I approach the "Marlowe" series with both anticipa and trepida tion. Taking it out of period is a major risk. If they make an attempt to stay true to Chandler's character and make him a "man out of time", it could be interesting. If Marlowe turns out to be just a guy with a name, it could be dreadful. The creative team will be key. Now, if they drafted guys like Crais and Connelly, who are Chandler's true descendants, to at least give story ideas, that could rock!

Yeah, Don, I myself alost quipped that "contemporary" and "Raymond Chandler" shouldn't ever be in the same sentence. Definitely a "wait and see."

I can't picture a contemporary Marlow. He belongs in the 1940's. Bad, bad, bad idea.

Well, ABC is doing Marlow and Pushing Daisies which probably means one will be great and the other horrid per their normal pattern. NBC will have a great show in probably with Zip and they'll cancel it within a month, staying true to form. Sci Fi and Lifetime will run it full run whether it is good or not and they won't care if anyone watches.

Matt..has ABC announced any of the folks involved with MARLOWE, and if so, do they give us any hope?
