Whoopi! Hurrah! Yay! The View (Ratings) Still Good

Didn't see this one comin'. Whoopi Goldberg's first week on The View tied Rosie O'Donnell's with a 1.2 rating (which had previously been the best that the chatfest had ever gotten for a premiere week). Moreover, says the Hollywood Reporter, the show was up 42 percent from the week before and up 12 percent in the key women aged 18-49 demo.

Sherri Shepherd's brought some eyeballs to The View as well. Her debut Monday averaged 3.9 million viewers, a tasty increase from last season's second-week average of 3.1 million.

Matt is en route to the Emmys in Los Angeles. Friday's Take was written by Ben Katner.

There going to make it after all. All we need is for Barb to throw her hat up in the air.

Just jokeing I love the View I miss Rosie, but still love it.

What this tells me is that Rosie brought a lot of eyes to the show, and people realized that the 'hot topics' really were a "hot" thing to watch, and now people are interested in hearing what everyone has to say, no matter who it is.

I wasn't thrilled about Whoopi joining the show, but I have to admit I'm not unloving her. She's doing well as host and moderator so far.

Of course, anyone who has followed my rants and raves over time KNOW I love Sherri (a wink to a certain special someone), and how much did everyone love her eat-and-drinkfest with Martha Stewart on Thursday!!! I was on the floor (no wait, that was Sherri)!:^O

As someone who has watched The View since day one (and even though I love Rosie, too), this news is gratifying.

I agree TVGord but I still miss Meredith she was favorite host.

Agree COMPLETELY, Joey!!! Meredith, Joy, Lisa and Barbara are The View CLASSIC for me! (I give Elisabeth what the kids call "mad props" for hanging in there, though!) ;)

I didn't mind Debbie at the time (no coincidence that I was dating an airhead at the time...kidding...completely kidding, if that-certain-someone sees this, because she was scary...and she will know who she is!) [oh God, why can't I shut up!!!]

Star was the only one who wore out her welcome with me. (She's scary, too, but to quote Eminem, I Just Don't Give A ****!!!)

I'm just waiting for all the Rosie Lovers/Elisabeth Haters who said the show was going to absolutely tank with Rosie gone to claim Rosie is responsible for the ratings boost.

To me, the show change when Meredith left, but I have heard some really good things about this mix and I can't wait to actually watch the shows I've recorded (all hail TiVo!)

Ms. Goldberg's support of the monster Michael Vick and her generalization of the south being dog torturers is disgusting, how is this being rewarded with viewership ?

But I guess there are many people that support animal abuse

Go figure

I do enjoy Whoopi on The View. She brings life back into what had become a pretty dull show since Rosie left. I was sometimes offended and often didn't agree with a lot of things Rosie said, but the show was never dull. However, I really dislike Sherri Shepherd. I don't see where where she brings anything of value to the show. I have endured Elisabeth, but she AND Sherry are just too much. Each day this week I watched less of the show. Today I only watched long enough to see Michael Douglas. It was fun while it lasted.

I like Whoopi on The View. She brings her viewpoint with humor and intelligence. There's no abrasiveness as with Rosie. Sherri Sheppard is a great addition too.

I have to weigh in on Whoopi and the Michael Vick thing. She wasn't condoning what he did, merely stating a fact that he comes from an area where dog fighting events take place. She actually said that she does not believe in it and loves animals. Unfortunately, people have honed in on that one sentence in her commentary and have judged her unfairly. Taking things out of context is what some reporters like to do. It makes sensational news. Too bad it gets so much press.

connie, your opinion is outdated and wildly ill-informed. Read mommcl's contribution for a more accurate View of what Whoopi was really saying that day (you need to watch THE SHOW instead of the unbalanced news reports of what happened that day).

yourothermother, I'm not trying to change your mind about Elisabeth and Sherri, but don't you think it's important to have their View on the show, if they are truly going to be a balanced show? I would hate the show if it only featured people with whom I agree. If your political leanings are truly worthy, surely they can stand up to opposing Views.

Incidentally, on Thursday they had Whoopi and Joy on the stage-left side of the table and Sherri and Elisabeth on stage-right. I hope they don't do that again, because that makes it seem too much like Crossfire (and nobody needs to relive THOSE days!) ;)

This is great news. I didn't enjoy Rosie's stay at all. She clearly has issues that should be dealt with. I'm glad her awful set changes are gone too.

I'm thrilled to see this, because while I did not always watch "The View" in its original heyday, despite the fact that I have a huge amount of love and respect for Meredith Vieira, and last year I tuned more regularly, mainly to see what Rosie was going to do next (I'll admit it, the drama was interesting!), I've got to say this year on "The View" is a huge improvement over last. I have loved Whoopi Goldberg ever since I saw her in the "Sister Act" movies and was thrilled to find out she was the new moderator. She is doing a fantastic job. She fits in with the other ladies on the panel, rather than trying to take over like Rosie did, which got old after a while.

I've watched every day so far this season, and I think they're having really honest, valid discussion. They disagree (but hey, that's America, and I love it!) on some things and agree on others, but they RESPECT each other and listen to what the others at the table are saying. Like for example, the other day they were talking about incorrect perceptions that people might have regarding Mormons and the whole polygamy thing, and they were asking whether or not this might pose a problem for Romney if he was in the White House, i.e. a "mystery woman" coming in the back door, and Elisabeth brought up the point that we have seen examples in the past of this sort of thing (i.e. presidents having affairs) and brought up Monica. Whoopi very strongly disagreed with bringing up the name "Monica" but Elisabeth defended her case, and Joy acknowledged that she was right (and Joy and Elisabeth go head to head quite a bit) and so did Whoopi. I kept thinking, if Rosie had been there, she would have just plowed over Elisabeth in a loud obnoxious way instead of really listening and discussing.

So I have been LOVING the Hot Topics so far this season. Whoopi is an able moderator and the addition of Sherri has also raised the bar because I agree, TV Gord, she is HILARIOUS. She's not afraid to speak her mind (did you see the seatbelt discussion the other day, when she talked about how she it would raise her boobs up to chin level? LOL) and yet she's always so funny.

And yes, TV Gord, I was DYING during her eat-and-drink fest with Martha yesterday. Absolutely hilarious!

So here's to more great, honest, fair discussions from people with different opinions this year on "The View!"

I am enjoying The View. Whoopi is great!
Sherri is so funny! Sometimes I just watch the hot topics. If they have someone I like on I watch that.As for Elisabeth, I still can not stand her.At least I like the other women. If not for Whoopi I would not be watching.
