Wedding Called Off, Degrees Eighty-Sixed

I almost didn't use Monday's "Wedding Is Off" ratings headline out of concern that it'd better serve a cancellation announcement. But hey, I'm no cynic. Yet here we are, and Fox has indeed shut down production on David E. Kelley's The Wedding Bells after seven episodes. The show debuted strongly — then again, Supertrain would get 12 mil coming out of Idol — but saw its numbers plunge to 4.5 mil last Friday. "We've been pleased with the show creatively," Fox says in a statement. "[It] just didn't secure the ratings we'd hope for."

Speaking of underperforming freshman series airing on Fridays, ABC has yanked Six Degrees effectively immediately, replacing it with Wife Swap repeats starting April 13.

I know I am in the minority, but that is too bad. Anything that gets Michael Landes and Missy Pyle on my screen every week is not all bad.

I knew I shouldn't have gotten interested in this show.

Some of us actually watch TV on Friday nights and this was a nice little bit of fun to end the week. When will the networks learn that they won't get huge numbers on Friday and just let us have one decent show to watch once in a while?

I wouldn't call it a good show, but I liked it, and I agree, they might as well put something mediocre on Friday nights for those of us without a social life. :-D

Why am I not surprised?

You're preaching to the choir here. My wife and I get so few shows to enjoy together — she's averse to the intense likes of 24 and Prison Break, and I can't publish here the words she uses to sum up Lost — and Six Degrees had just made her list. Sigh.

I'm not surprised about the cancellation. Wasn't the episode that had the return of the "runner" supposed to be the second ep? It just seemed like it to me. Running out of order is not usually a good sign (Firefly anybody?). Plus I kept looking for Jason Katim's stamp on the show and all I got was David Kelly, and a tire one at that. But that's just me.

Mrs. Matt dislikes PB? How could she? Has she not seen Wentworth and Dominic?

Have you broken the news to her yet about Six Degrees?

Hey Matt!

Do you have the "Six Degrees" news on good authority? Just yesterday ABC put up a summary of the episode for April 20 on their press site. Pretty strange if they decide to pull it. Unless it was a VERY last-minute decision. And I have not found anything about it anywhere... not in the trades, ABC, nowhere....

If it's true, I so wish that Erika Christensen finds a new gig ASAP. I know you agree... :)

ETA: OK, forget it,Matt. Just saw it over at Variety. Must have missed because of the pretty generic headline... :)

I will really miss Six Degrees. This show really got the shaft - a six or 7 episode run then an hiatus until it was cast off to Fridays. Sounds like the networks have done it again!

Any word on NBC and Friday Night Lights? This is one show that really scares me that we will not see season 2.

What will this Friday look like? Will 6 Degrees and Wedding Bells be pulled?

At this time, I'm mainly homebound, due to a recuring medical problem. My favorite TV shows have helped me pass the time, without going too stir-crazy.

Although "The Wedding Bells" would have never been an Emmy-awarding winning show, it was cute show that I enjoyed. Instead of watching the nastiness that "Bridezillas" offers, this show was able to showcase the good, the bad and the bizzare activities that go on behind the scenes when people are getting married.

I will truly miss this show.

:( This is upsetting.

My mother and I liked watching The Wedding Bells together, which is odd, since we hardly ever enjoy the same show.

I hope David E. Kelly has plans for a new show soon. That's a man I can trust with dialogue.
