« Today's News: Our Take
The View's Hasselbeck Sticks Up for... a Clinton?!
The View's Elisabeth Hasselbeck by Steve Fenn/ABC
Elisabeth Hasselbeck, known for her sometimes-conservative stances on issues, on Wednesday surprised her View cohosts by revealing not only her support for Chelsea Clinton, but her "voicemail relationship" with the ex-president's daughter.
Hasselbeck's news came as the group discussed a clip in which Chelsea, on the campaign trail for a certain White House hopeful, responded to a reporter's query as to whether she thought Mom's credibility was damaged because of the Lewinsky scandal. Chelsea responded, "Wow. You're the first person actually that's ever asked me that question... in the maybe 70 college campuses I've now been to. And I do not think that's any of your business."
At first, Hasselbeck opined, "It's a great question." But she then added, "I certainly have not agreed with Senator Clinton on her policies... but seeing [Chelsea] handle that, I felt for her." Liz then shared how she left a vociemail for Chelsea, explaining to the View audience, "I wanted her to know from my mouth directly that I respect how she handled that with not just wit but dignity."
As Joy Behar gushed, "That's so beautiful!" and Barbara Walters appeared clearly surprised, it was Whoopi Goldberg — Hasselbeck's occasional sparring partner — who walked across the stage to give her a hug.
"We can disagree about a lot of things," Whoopi said, "but when it comes to being a stand-up person, you're one of the stand-up people. I adore you and I think you calling Chelsea was a class act."
Did Hasselbeck surprise you, too? Did Goldberg? Do you agree with their views on Chelsea's response? — Anna Dimond

Hi, achy.
Wow. What happened to the good old days when a View item guaranteed comments out the yin-yang?
For the record, this makes me think more of Hasselbeck.
Not a lot more, but more.
And I commend Chelsea for her skillful handling of an inappropriate question. That had to be tough.
Especially since she answered as she ran from a helicopter, dodging sniper fire.

I was short on sleep -- I might have misspoke in my earlier post.
That happens.
It proves I'm human.

I think people have stopped watching because it's routine now. There's no reason to watch. I wonder how it's doing in the ratings.

Why are so many people acting so surprised? Because Elisabeth, who has primarily conservative viewpoints, was kind to Chelsea? Im enjoying the irony that so many supposedly "open-minded" people have such a narrow, preconceived opinion of Elisabeth.

I don't know! I don't recall hearing any ratings reports for The View in while. Oh, Ma-aaaaaaatt....

I guess because they're used to conservatives saying things like "Did you know there is a White House dog?" while displaying a photo of Chelsea (Rush Limbaugh, 1993) and ""Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno" (John McCain, 1998).
I guess it does surprise some of us now when a conservative is able to break away from the herd and be a human being.

Congratulations to Elizabeth, a class act as usual.
Why do people think that just because you have a conservative viewpoint that you aren't kind and compassionate? I am a conservative and a Registered Nurse ( a profession of which compassion is a hallmark). I have been surprised at the large number of conservative people in this profession, actually.
Anyway, it is interesting that the posted link to the Limbaugh ill-advised comment didn't mention the few skits that Saturday Night Live had done regarding Chelsea's appearance?
Bottom line is that people on either side of "the aisle" are good, caring, compassionate people. And folks on either side "of the aisle" can be asses.
We are all human, folks. Painting either side with broad strokes is just unreasonable.

I guess maybe some people aren't interested because this is much less hostility on the The View now. People can have political differences and still get along. I too think Whoopi is a breath of fresh air still not as good as my favorite Meredith but much better the Rosie & Star.

Even funnier...Lizzie thinks her opinion rates enough that Chelsea will care what a wannabe ex-reality star thinks. Get over yourself, Elizabeth...

I too still like the View and I was skeptical at first with Whoopi coming on board, but it's actually pretty good with her on there. I rarely watched with Rosie b/c she was annoying and got on my nerves. She was so one-sided and I stopped watching regularly after Meredith left, but Whoopi is really good and she's funny and a breath of fresh air. Actually, the show is the best it's been since Meredith. As for Elisabeth, she is a class act. Yes, she has her opinions, but in my opinion, she is still a great mom and a great person. This just shows what a big heart she has.

I'm of mixed opinion on the question Chelsea was asked and how she responded to it - the question was about her mother's credibility, not her mother's personal feelings. And her credibility is certainly our business, since she's asking to be our president. All Chelsea had to do was shut the person down with a, "No" instead of throwing a hissy fit (because I DO believe the correct answer is, no, Bill's affair did not affect Hillary's credibility). As a member of Hillary's campaign, she has to realize that questions about Bill's affair are going to come up somewhere, somehow. And she needed a far classier way to handle it.

I think Elisabeth is a stand-up person. She has different opinions than some of the others on the show. However, I honestly believe that she has a valid reason for her beliefs and they are not extreme. (especially compared to most Americans who are much more moderate and may have some liberal views and some conservative views, but differ on how the best results would be achieved)
