Veronica Mars Boss in Talks to Pen 90210 Spin-off

Donna Martin's son graduates? OK, maybe we aren't quite there yet but the CW is developing a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210 — and no less than Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is in talks to bring it to life.

Details about the premise and whether any original cast members will reprise their roles are sketchy, says the Reporter, but the netlet has fast-tracked the first script and is expected to order a pilot (or not) by the end of the month. Original 90210 creator Darren Star is not involved, says the trade.

What's your take? A fitting companion piece to Gossip Girl, or a recipe for spun-off disaster? Is Rob T. the man to make this work?

More intriguing, which series originals do you think might resurface for this revisiting? Let's take a roll call:
Jason: Awaiting word on Side Order of Life, Season 2
Luke: Not awaiting word on Windfall, Season 2
Ian: Hosting some obscure reality show
BAG: Rocking Terminator... but for any longer?
Tori: Slamming mom in new memoir
Gabrielle: Recovering from partial facial paralysis
Jennie: Recovering from Dancing with the Stars
Shannen: Anyone...?

Poll: Good idea or bad? Vote here.

I dunno how I feel about this.... I was a huge fan of 90210 as it was on from when I was 11 till I was almost 21. I almost feel like a spin-off this many years later is crazy! If any original cast members reprised their roles, any children wouldn't even be old enough to be in high school! Unless it took place in the future. :-p And come on, Gabrielle Carteris can in no way, shape or form play anyone in their 30's now. ;)

They should have just kept Veronica Mars. I was really excited to see it/her move forward and into the FBI. But I guess all they want are second rate knock-offs to shows that were already a hit when they were taken off the air! Maybe one day they will learn......not holding my breath though.

Hmmm...I'm not sure about this. I never, ever watched 90210 but LOVED Veronica Mars. If they don't include anyone from the original 90210 it might be okay. I'd rather have Rob develop something original and show run it instead.

The CW heads must be about ready for commitment to a mental facility now if they're planning this. Dumbest idea I've heard in a long time.

Please, Matt. Comparing Gabriel Carteris to Daniel Radcliff of Harry Potter? Them's fighting words!

I'm not sure about this either. I loved 90210, but I don't know. But if anyone can pull it off Rob Thomas can. They should have just kept Veronica Mars.

Matt is on a roll this morning - toward getting clobbered, that is. There's a big difference between Daniel Ratcliffe playing a 17-year-old when he's 20 to 21 and Gabrielle Carteris, who is 47, playing someone in her early 30s.

But, even leaving out the appearances by the former denizens of 90210, this whole idea sucks toilet water.

Maybe Rob will dust off the Veronica-as-FBI agent pilot and swap in Kelly Taylor? — MWM

It's so crazy, it just might work. Or fail spectacularly. I'd try watching it though. I have a certain fondness for the cheesefest that was 90210, and I loved Veronica Mars.

Rob Thomas would be crazy to do a project for the CW after what happened on Veronica Mars. Run, RT!! Of course, the other networks mostly don't have a great rep for nurturing smart sophisticated shows either. Wait a sec...90210? Hmmm. RT can probably write that in his sleep. Never mind. Make some money, Rob. You deserve it.
