« Today's News: Our Take
Vatican Glad Compass Went South, More Movie News
The Golden Compass courtesy New Line Cinema
If The Golden Compass' tarnished box office tanks plans for more films based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, "it wouldn’t be a big loss," the official Vatican daily L'Osservatore Romano editorialized on Wednesday. The paper previously called the pic "devoid of any particular emotion apart from a great chill" and "the most anti-Christmas film possible." (Our Maitland says they must not have seen Sweeney Todd!).... Per Variety, Sam Raimi next will spin Drag Me to Hell, a thriller he wrote with his brother, Ivan.... Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah and Sophie Okonedo have signed on for The Secret Life of Bees (buy the novel at Amazon), while Dakota Fanning is in talks to play the girl taken in by three sisters.... Dwight Little (Anacondas) will direct Tekken, based on the video game.

The Secret Life of Bees (buy the novel at Amazon)
I hate to get all nit-picky, but you can buy the book anywhere, and preferably at an established, independent bookstore near you. Amazon really doesn't need any more free advertising, it's got Oprah for that!

Hasn't ANYBODY learned by now? Movies based on video games always SUCK!
((Except for the Tomb Raider movies, and ONLY because of Angelina.))

Hey it's nice if you want to support your local independent bookstore but when I can get books (and DVDs, CDs, electronics and all the other stuff they sell at Amazon) for a whole lot cheaper and not pay sales tax, I'm gonna do it. And if TV Guide online can remain a free service by providing links to Amazon, that's fine by me.

Then, I hope later in life Buffy Freak you don't complain about your city or county or state raising taxes to cover the many expenses needed for your comfort and roads and food and clothing, all because people like you don't support locally owned and operated independent businesses, the sales tax of which goes to fund all these much needed county, city, and state projects. I also hope you never own and operate a business of your own and learn the lessons that the bookstores, music stores, independent grocery stores, small mom and pop hardware stores, drugstores, toy stores, etc. have had to learn- mostly by going bankrupt. It's nice to save a buck, but it's also nice to contribute to your community and keep it vital and thriving, while watching out for your neighbors and fellow man. I personally don't want to live in some generic, Wal-Mart, Barnes and Noble, Costco, Target, Oprahfied community, and if I can encourage just a few other people to think about their spending and what it means to the people around them (and to their tax base) I'm going to feel pretty good about myself.

I use Amazon and other online services as well. But when possible, I prefer to use something local (however, buying comics at any place other than a local shop is wrong, wrong, wrong!).
I don't stress about it, but there is no need for TV Guide to link to Amazon considering all of the other advertisements on this site.
And I definitely don't like having it weaved into the news items. I think of my media as a McDLT or a Reese's peanut butter cup: keep the hot side hot, keep the cool side cool and don't get your chocolate advertisements in my peanut butter news.
And I definitely agree that the local character of America is being lost. Why travel? Ohio is the same as Portland now. But hey, who cares as long as every venti latte you ever get tastes exactly the same?
