Bertinelli Says She Cheated on Van Halen, Too

Valerie Bertinelli, who starred as One Day at a Time good girl Barbara Royer, told audiences watching The Oprah Winfrey Show that infidelity and drugs ended her marriage to rocker Eddie Van Halen. But she also shouldered her half of the blame, admitting she cheated, too.

The couple married in 1981 when Bertinelli was 20, and she claims she "destroyed" her body keeping up with the rock-star lifestyle. "It took me years after stopping the cocaine before I was able to enjoy a sunrise and enjoy the sound of birds," she said.
Van Halen and Bertinelli separated in 2001, and their divorce became final in December. After losing 40 pounds, Bertinelli is currently the spokeswoman for Jenny Craig. She also has a new book out, Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time, which she plugged this morning following a One Day at a Time reunion of sorts on Today.

My Mom claims she made her share of mistakes when she was between ages 20 and 35. And at 55 she can't believe she was so silly. I think if you are determined to mess up and make big mistakes, make them when you are really young so you have plenty of time to live them down, correct them, and get on with whatever life you recognize you want to live. Just as Ms. Bertinelli did.

I'm not shocked at all, considering the lifestyle they were leading at the time. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they are younger, and we learn from these. That's life.

So... the question is... Does Cocaine addiction and marital infidelity shatter Valeries "good girl" image. Well, I guess if you're talking in hollywood terms, it's kinda just par for the course. But let me go out on a limb here and say YES, it shatters her good girl image. It's nice to see her trying to get her life back together, but isn't that just the new "thing" in hollywood today. It's all nothing more than shameless self promotion and bookselling. Get Real.

Do Valerie's revelations shatter her good girl image? No. Do people, whether celebrity or non-celebrity, do drugs and cheat on their significant others? Yes. It's all - fortunate or unfortunate - a part of life.
The fact is, she moved past her cocaine addiction, past the infidelity - on both her and her husband's part - and past her weight gain to re-establish her life. Perhaps rather than passing judgment (as some seem inclined to do), people should congratulate (again, as some seem inclined to do) her for moving past her mistakes to a better future. Good girl or bad girl, she's survived. : )

The significant difference is that "normal", non-celebrities who take part in such activities don't then have an opportunity to make millions off it. I'm so tired of these so-called "celebrities" re-inventing themselves just to make a buck. We haven't heard from Valerie in 2 decades because she was financially set with Eddie Van Halen. Now that she is single, she's in our face just to get rich from her "revelations".

Well, first of all she will only get "rich" if people are interested enough to buy the book. I don't have any need to as she told all I need to hear on Oprah yesterday.

Second, I wasn't aware she was a "good" girl. Didn't think of her either good or bad.

Just because she is another celebrity recovering from addiction does not mean she is any less entitled to be making a comeback. I don't think that "Eddie's money" is what kept her from working all those years. It was the addiction and personal issues she was going through. She's breaking through and ready to get back out there. More power to her.

Oh, come on! Why didn't you use her quote "I wasn't an angel," so someone could say no, but she played one on television! (Showing my age, I know)

What makes me feel REAL OLD is the fact that little "Barbara Royer" from One Day At A Time is going to be 48 years old this April!! Sheesh!!! Where does the time go?!?!?!

Well, she knew how to survive. As neglectful as Eddie was being, she knew well how to seek the comfort and warmth from others. Hey family, there's no shame when love the one you're with!

She looks good and I am glad she got her life together but I could care less.I remember how everyone felt left down when she got mixed up with the rocker.I know you don't live your life for fans but now it appears she was a lier because she always defended her decision. It is her life.I will not buy her book.I think the guy she married is a mess. The Phillips girl took a lot of grief and here Valerie wasn't much better. She just had a better PR department.

I'm pretty sure her character's name was Barbara Cooper. Where did you get Royer?
