In this TCA red-carpet video, Michael Urie and Becki Netwon discuss how the Ugly Betty production's move to New York City will be felt (or perhaps even smelled) on screen. Plus: The BFFs share their musical ode to guest star La Lohan.
I haven't been able to view the video yet, but I DO need to say...
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE BEING IN NYC!!!!
I've been in love with New York City as long as I can remember being alive. I was always drawn to shows set in The City, shows that broadcast from there (sorry, Johnny, The Tonight Show was never as good when you left New York). I loved New York until I was 25, and then I WENT THERE! Now, I am not merely in love with that city. It is a part of me.
While I have more or less enjoyed Ugly Betty the way I occasionally like chewing gum, it has NEVER had the "feel" of New York. I actually didn't slight it for that, becasue I think they were intentionally going for that style (I slighted it for the cartoonish feel and one-dimensional characters, however).
I'm not sure UB fans will like the kind of show I hope it will become actually IN New York. I hope it embraces The City. It can still be stylish and hilarious, but I think it needs to be a little more "grounded" to survive for the long haul.
I tune into UB for the one or two but-gusting-hilarious lines they manage to wedge into the show every week, but I never say, "Oh damn!", if I miss an episode. If they do this right (for me, anyway), I would be happy for this to become a must-see show. I just wonder/fear for current fans whether it can hold them through the transition.
I saw the video. Becky and Michael are so cute together and they do seem as if they've known each other FORever. They even finish each other's sentences.
New York or not, I've always loved the show since it started in 2006, and I still do. At the core of it all, there's a great story, with a lot of sweetness and humor to boot. I hope more viewers will come to appreciate it for what it really is. Also, I hope this move to NYC doesn't turn the show into a "Sex & the City" clone. As long as the show keeps that underlying "Betty" feel going, I'll be happy.
That was a great interview, they are so cute together. No wonder their chemistry as best friends onscreen is so real.
I'm all for UB moving to New York. As a former New Yorker, there's nothing like the real thing. And they are NOT kidding about the smell. You know you're in Manhattan when... well, I'd rather not gross anybody out.
My only beef w/TPTB or the CGI people or whoever was responsible for that debacle of a closing scene last season--Betty's house is NOT IN BROOKLYN. For anybody who knows anything about the five boroughs and how they're situated, it was an insult. Of course, I'm speaking for myself but I'm sure I'm not the only one. As long as they get little details like this straight, I'm all for it.

Considering all the CGI from last season, they inadvertently ended up with a Tim Burton-type of NY setting...which is pretty comical, actually. LOL.
