Tuned Out: Why Day Break Is MIA from ABC.com

I see a lot of TVGuide.com regulars wondering why ABC has not followed through on its promise, tendered at the time of Day Break's ouster from the broadcast schedule, to make any of the unaired episodes available on the network's website. Well, I checked in with an Alphabet rep, and he explains that the holdup is due to "unforeseen music clearance issues," which are currently being looked into. What, is Daniel Powter reluctant to lend his American Idol song to the finale?

WTF?! So what would have happened if the episode would have aired on TV? I can't understand this music hold up? Not that I don't get music clearances, I don't get why it wasn't cleared before the show was to air.

Thanks Matt for finding out the problem. We Day Break fans really appreciate you and Jack.

Angel Cohn and I were talking about this and yeah, it seems odd. But maybe there is broadcast clearance, and then there is "other purpose" (e.g. online streaming) clearance?

Sounds sketchy to me.....but then again they did take Day Break off the air. I was actually bored with the tube last night and opted for a DVD from my shelf. Was much more entertaining then what anyone was running...re-runs give me a break....I want to be entertained!

I was looking forward to coming home tonight and watchind Daybreak. I even popped popcorn before sitting down...I guess I should have looked online first.

It's good to see Matt working so late (8:40 pm!) to keep us informed. Can you let us know when it's cleared up? Thanks, pal!

As a composer who's worked with people in the TV scoring scene, and who has worked on music thats shown up in TV shows.

This is probably exactly the case. What makes me chuckle tho, is that had the network NOT canceled the show, I wonder if the people who provided the music in question would have even known that the show was being streamed online :)

Anywho, I'd have expected suits at ABC would have had this already drawn up in licensing agreements. Figuring they've been streaming for a while now. All my contracts have this covered nowadays.

Thanks Matt for keeping us updated

There is only one piece of source music in the latest episode - it's public domain and it was cleared weeks ago. So I'm unclear why ABC is using this as an excuse. Currently there are two episodes in the can, ready to go. The rest will ready and available in January and February.

That reason seems like a load of crap. The previous episodes have been available online as well. It seems like they would have had this covered already. I am really am beginning to dislike ABC. First they cancel the great Invasion and now they do this. At least come up with a better excuse ABC!

Yeah, seems kinda lame to me. So if the show were still airing, there's no way it would have been put on the website? Please. The clearance departments of networks are usually right on top of this stuff, especially now that many shows go straight to the web after airing. I'm finding this a bit tough to swallow.

Anyway, thanks for the follow up, Matt. Quit working late, it's a holiday weekend!

Matt - thanks so much for this information, even if it is annoying and not ringing true for most of us.

Thanks, too, to the musician who has experience with all of this - I'm sure I speak for many when I say that ABC seems to be a little shady with this explanation. The episode we were expecting online was to have aired on Dec. 20 and the one we're expecting online next week would have aired on Dec. 27 so what really gives?!

p.s. and who votes for trying to shop Day Break to another network? This would work pretty well on Fox or the CW ...

p.s. again - or what about a cable channel?! Day Break would be great on cable ...

heyheath30-I'll gladly shop Day Break to another network! I'm all for it! Do you know how we would go about doing that?

I wrote abc another note, yet again, to ask them what's going on with Day Break eventhough they most-likely won't respond to me because they haven't before. But, I guess we'll see what happens!

Hey shorebaby and heyheath30.....I'm right there with you in shopping to another network or cable....Daybreak would be a good fit for Fox, TNT, TBS, USA or even A&E.

I've also been writing ABC. I just want to be entertained.....re-runs - not entertaining!

I just love Daybreak and want to see it take off. I'm not giving up hope!
