T.R. Knight Urges Dignity and Respect for Gays
T.R. Knight courtesy GLAAD
Today — as in on the exact one-year anniversary of the on-set fracas that ultimately led T.R. Knight to come out of the closet — GLAAD premiered a video PSA (watch it here) in which the Grey's Anatomy star asks people to treat gays and transgenders with "dignity and respect," and to listen when a loved one decides to come forth with their orientation. Echoing the theme for the GLAAD initiative, Knight asks you to "Be an ally... and a friend." Or, if you are The Breakfast Club's Sheedy, you can go for the rare hat trick and be an Ally and an ally and a friend.

I urge everyone to watch all of the PSA videos at the GLAAD website and share the links with your family and friends (especially your straight-but-not-narrow friends).
I also urge TVGuide.com to rethink the way they have headlined this article:
Grey's T.R. Knight urges "respect" for gays
I call particular attention to the placement of the word respect in quotes. Yes, I know that T.R. Knight is being quoted here, but the way this headline scans reminds me of how enemies of LGBT equality often place key words in quotes as a signal of disrespect and contempt. For example, look at this headline from the ultra-conservative Washington Times newspaper:
Homosexuals Push for Gay "Marriage"
See how the Times demeans the fight for marriage equality by placing the word marriage in quotes, as if what we are fighting for is somehow lesser than or not equal to heterosexual marriage?
Maybe I'm just being too sensitive, but when TVGuide.com put the singlar key word "respect" in quotes, it struck me the same way that the Times always puts marriage in quotes when reporting on the LGBT fight for equality.

Yes, I was merely quoting T.R Knight, not echoing any agenda by the Times or whomever. I love slipping quotes into my headlines! It lets the reader know that an interview or sound bite is contained within. But I would not want that to be misinterpreted in the way you suggest, so I will amend it in this instance (as well as on the homepage).

It is a very sad day when T.R. Knight is the new face for all gay people. Hey T.R. if you want respect for who you are then go live in another country. Here in America we respect people for what they do not who they do. Shut your face T.R. and go back into the closest so that we don't have remember what your name was.

I disagree. If it's a quote, the important word (or words) can be put in quotations.
I would never tell anyone that he/she is being too sensitive, but if the person (Knight) says the word(s) then why can't it be used as part of a headline? There's no agenda, at least from what I've seen here, by TV Guide/Matt. As a former copy editor, I would have put "dignity and respect" in quotation marks in the original headline.
By the way, have you sent a letter to the editor to the Washington Times about its headline punctuation for marriage?

I think it's a very sad day that Scorned1 gets to put their ugly opinion on an article asking for respect. Wow, you kiss your mom with that hateful mouth?
Go T.R., continue to demand the respect that ALL humans are entitled to.

thankulord13: in what way exactly have gay people in general disrespected you, or anybody else for that matter?

thankulord13I'm sorry, what agenda is that? The ONLY thing gay people want is the same rights that you have. Nothing special, just to live their life without being degrated and hated because they are different from the "norm". There is no agenda you nutter. You have lord in your name and you are still judgemental, the ONLY person who has the right to judge is God, not you!

Scorned1 - First of all, why do you care who is the "new face for all gay people?" How does this personally affect you? Oh yeah, it doesn't.
Secondly, I don't recall TR Knight's name associated with having "done" anybody. He also didn't wake up one day and decide to announce his personal business to the world. This situation was put upon him and he's doing the best he can with it. If his courage and poise helps other people dealing with their own issues, then he's doing a hell of a lot more for the world than you.
And finally, I get the nik... perhaps you are "scorned" due to your obvious contempt for others with views different from your own. Trust in the fact that after today, most of the people who have read your post will not remember what YOUR name was... and I'll never again waste my time and energy giving you an ounce of the attention you so obviously crave.
And now, thankulord:
Whatever! T.R. Knight the poster boy for gay people... its like having Bush the spokes person for MENSA... What a joke... I am personally tired of the Gay agenda... You want respect... give a little and then maybe you will get some...
It hurts to even type the word "lord" in association with your nik, b/c the Lord I am familiar with is both loving and tolerant of others.
I am almost curious why "TR is to Gay People as Bush is to Mensa" (paraphrased). If you're saying that Bush isn't smart enough for Mensa... you are also implying that TR isn't gay enough for gay? I'm sorry, what ruler are you measuring this by?
Your sense of entitlement when it comes to respect is almost laughable... how is it that you, personally, have been disrepected by the "gay agenda" or a gay individual in general? Are you somehow MORE deserving of respect than anyone else? Why should anyone give YOU respect when you clearly don't understand the meaning of it?
