Torchwood Returns with a "Life-changing Event"

Eve Myles, Indira Varma and John Barrowman by Steve Brown/BBC America
When John Barrowman's time-traveling, bisexual, alien-fighting Captain Jack Harkness returns on Jan. 26 for a second season of Torchwood, look for what BBCA calls "a life-changing event for one of the team." James Marsters of Buffy/Angel fame, who most recently did his sci-fi thing on Smallville (and is expected to return in a January episode) is due to guest-star on BBCA's highest-rated series, as is Alan Dale (Ugly Betty) and Doctor Who's Freema Agyeman.

Marsters, who says he wrote five songs for his new solo CD Like a Waterfall while filming in Wales, tells us he plays a time-agent criminal "with a lower-class English accent" who's not that unlike his sexy bloodsucking Spike "before the wheelchair. He goes around in different times killing people with no remorse at all."

Marsters says he had a "fabulous" time doing the Who spin-off. "They're a randy bunch over there," he says approvingly. In other good news for fans, Torchwood: The Complete First Season goes on sale Jan. 22, with a seven-disc set that includes six hours of bonus features. — Ileane Rudolph

Wow! I thought we'd have to wait a whole year to get S2 in the US. Yay to BBC America for making Torchwood run almost concurrently with the UK airings!

This is great news. I love this show. I've watched every episode that's aired on BBCA. I knew the first season was coming to an end soon, so it will be wonderful to not have to wait so long for season 2.

James will be in the season premiere and finale. Plus, he hopes he's back for some more in season 3 (if there is a season 3....)

Thank you BBC America!

First, Hex and Eleventh Hour. And now the wonderful Torchwood. This Thanksgiving, I'll be giving thanks for the brilliant BBC America.

I'm very excited to hear the news about James Marsters. Although the only character he's ever been good at is Spike - this sounds like the closest we'll ever get to Spike again. If he still looks good shirt-less, I'll be hoping for many more than two episodes.

Wow, they're following up season 1 pretty quickly for us Americans. Torchwood is definitely a breath of fresh air on television and I'm really glad I won't have to wait to see season 2.

Wow. That's shocking news that BBCA is giving us Torchwood 2 so quickly. I'll probably still try to find the uncut episodes online first, but it's nice to not have the unnecessarily long wait.

If only BBC DVD sets weren't so expensive...would it kill them to price them closer to average, rather than so freakin' HBO-esque high?

Also, it'd be great if BBCA would get around to airing the 3rd and 4th seasons of Peep Show one of these days. Totally off subject, but it's truly one of the funniest comedies around (and BBCA's not doing anything to let people discover it).

We only have to wait until January for season two. That's awesome!

Thanks BBC-A!

I wondered if BBCA might do something like this to capitalize both on the popularity of this show and the Hollywood writers strike. Either way -thank you BBCA!!!!

Totally off subject - is tonight the end of Hotel Babylon? There's no mention on IMDB about a season 3 (seasons 1 & 2 aired consecutively as one season). What's going to meet my guilty pleasure/Wicked Wednesday needs after HB and Footballer$ Wives?

Open letter to BBC-A:

Thanks for bringing us "Torchwood." Please tell your advertisers that I'll start supporting them as soon as you start showing the program uncut, perhaps in a 75-minute slot. Meanwhile, I'll be drafting my open letter of support to Netflix.

Yeh it is pretty cool how the Brits do tv. A season is usually like only 6 or 10 episodes, and then the next season starts only a few months after the last. At least these days thanks to digital tv network competition we get things a lot faster now (unlike old PBS e.g.). hehe

Eveyone keep in mind that Season 1 aired in GB back in 2006. BBCA picked the show up a year later, modified just slightly mostly for language and the occasional bum shot. Gwen does tend to use the F-bomb a bit as do most coppers, and that Reece will prance about the flat sans nickers. It is just him and Gwen after all.
Normal pattern would have been to lag by a year as they do with Dr. Who, but apparently BBCA decided to take advantage of the whopping success of Torchwood in the US and (I suspect) paid a premium to show season 2 more quickly. And bless them for it!
