Tom Cruise "Calm and Collected" in New Oprah Interviews

The couch-jumping Tom Cruise of yore is but a distant memory in upcoming Oprah interviews on Friday and Monday. In honor of Cruise's 25-year career (starting from his Risky Business sock-dancing days), Oprah Winfrey interviewed the actor for a special two-part series, for which she met with him at his home in Telluride and at her Chicago studio (a sneak peek of Friday's segment is on Oprah's website here).

Audience members from the taping reported back to the AP that none of Cruise's now-fabled antics were on display. Diane Andonovski of Toronto, Canada, said Cruise was "was really calm and collected." Another woman from the audience described the actor as "so sweet and so sincere."

Oprah, however, pressed Cruise for answers. From the sounds of it, she hit the big bases: She asked him about the testy Matt Lauer interview, Cruise's criticism of Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants, whether he was accepted by wife Katie Holmes' family and if he thought he was unfairly criticized himself.

Is this the new Tom Cruise? Or simply a chastened one? — Anna Dimond

Tom Cruise's reputation has fallen over the last few years. There has been a lot of media backlash over this relationship with younger Holmes (who would ever have imagined these two would get together), his couch jumping interview on Oprah, his rant about psychiatry on the Today show and his involvement with Scientology in general. The gay rumors persist especially on celebitchy websites like D-listed.

I think he's doing some damage control so he's definitely going to reign in his enthusiasm and be calm and collected during this interview. Let's just say that the media backlash has had a chastening effect on him

Two words for you: Damage Control. For me, it comes little too late, I can't look him at him and not see the guy he was a couple years back.

I enjoy his movies but personally, he's the epitome of the Hollywood flake.

1. "Calm and Collected"? Really? Must have been all that exercise and those vitamins he keeps pushing.;)

2. I don't really care for fanatics who decide to proselytize when all I want is some escapist entertainment.

3. Leopards don't change their spots.

4. I have NEVER seen him in a role where I could forget, for even one minute, that it's TC.

FYI the link on your homepage has "chouch" instead of "couch".

actually... i thought his portrayal in magnolia wasn't bad- in terms of getting lost in character.

actors who tend to get lost in their roles tend to have more vocal control and technique. You can give a very nuanced performance, but if you still sound exactly the same each time, people are always going to see YOU. Notice that the best performances tend to reflect this.

This is the way Tom Cruise was BEFORE meeting and marrying Katie Holmes, so I'm just chalking up his behavior 3 years ago to that "Euphoric Love Rush" he had during his courtship with Katie Holmes. Seems like his public "calm and cool" demeanor benefits him better anyway :D

Actually sitting on a couch does not constitute "normal."
Just think of all the out-of-work psychologists if it did!!

I have really enjoyed some Tom Cruise movies, but not others. It amazes me that it was only three years ago people came to the realization that this actor was a bit odd. His first wife was older than he was (at the time). His second wife was delightful, but odd in her own way. Now he is married to such a younger beauty, but the connection between the two is not easily comprehended by the outside world (and every time I grocery shop there is another negative story about the couple’s marriage). Tom has some unusual religious beliefs (if you call that religion), he does not believe in Psychology, and he is an excitable guy (did no one see that hand stand he did years ago while being interviewed on...Lord, I do not remember which TV magazine program)...many Americans believe that Psychology is hocus pocus nonsense; at least his religious beliefs do not include creating terrorism in the world (unless bad Hollywood movies can be considered terrorism...Paging John Travolta). Tom Cruise is falling into the same trap as Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama; no matter what face you put forth for the general public, you can still be criticized; then you make changes and try to show a different side to yourself, and you are accused of being fake or pandering to the public. Steve Martin is not the corner on the market for Wild and Crazy Guys...maybe the problem is so many people want Tom Cruise to be the character he has played in so many of those movies. Tom has played a bartender, lawyer, deadbeat Dad, racecar driver, motivational speaker, futuristic police officer, hired assassin, secret agent, sports agent, crappy human being, good person, selfish, generous, womanizer...and the list of characters or character's traits Could go on and on...But Tom is just an actor playing those parts, and when the movie is over, he goes back to being just an ordinary man (it would be interesting if a successful Hollywood actor was also a hired assassin on his days off) – Tom is a father and husband, and somehow our society wants him to fit into some sort of specific role or box during his day to day life --- yet on the screen he is suppose to fulfill our desire to embody a character and make us forget he is Tom Cruise; maybe it is not Tom Cruise that is the problem, but our society; Senator Obama had to cut off all ties to his long time Pastor, Mentor, and friend...But when it comes to Tom Cruise, if you do not like to see his movies, do not pay the admission; if you do not want to see him on Oprah, change the channel; and if you do not like reading those stupid stories in the tabloids at the grocery store, than do not buy the magazines. Is it really anyone’s business if this actor is gay? He is worth more than a hundred million dollars, the head of a movie studio, and need not be in another movie his entire life. Is it his ego? If people stop paying attention, he would fade into the background very quickly. I can only hope Tom and Katie are happy, and their daughter grows up feeling safe and well loved; I hope Tom goes on to make more movies (only good ones, not the ones that sucked). I also hope that people grow up and stop judging him so harshly, and take a look at their own imperfections. Or just enjoy judging his harshly if that makes you feel better about your own life, and superior to this actor. Tom is a wacky Dude, and if not for that, our lives would be so much more boring.

Why does everyone have to be so negative on here, does this site ask for it??? Or do they simply write articles about famous people so we can make fun and bitch about their life. Tom Cruise is only a man and I for one don't intend to try to tear him down, let's all let him be happy because he does appear to be so . With so much love for his family we can see it in the sparkle in his eyes when he speaks of them. I'm happy for him. I read the article and comments and shook my head, not really surprised by the negativity after all thats what its for isn't it. So we can spew hate at people we are obviously jealous of .Be happy Tom and family!! Now that's my opinion.......Alyce
