So You Think You Can Dance: The First Couple Exits

Rayven Armijo and Jamie Bayard by Michael Becker/Fox
It seemed that So You Think You Can Dance had only just begun when the first couple was sent home Thursday. Rayven Armijo and Jamie Ray Bayard were the first of the Top 20 to perform — and also the first to be cut, despite their humorous hip-hop routine to Estelle's "American Boy" (feat. Kanye West). Friday morning, they spoke to press. Here's what they had to say on:

Nigel's Comment on Dancing First and Leaving First:
Rayven:
Timing is everything, right? It's possible that the timing just wasn't there for us. We worked all night to get that to perfection, and I thought we did really well as a ballroom dancer and a ballerina.
Jamie: I think [Nigel's comment] has a lot of truth to it. We didn't have much airtime at the beginning, so when we went out, that was the first time that America had ever seen us. Nigel obviously understands how the show works.

Finding Out They Were Going Home:
Rayven: First, I was really proud of myself and everything, I thank myself for pushing forward to keep moving and doing this. But after that after that, I was disappointed, because I wanted to work with all the choreographers...I wanted to show America my potential and I know they would have fallen in love with me.
Jamie: I was a little surprised. I know that somebody has to go, that's the reality of the competition, and that's what the judges tell us afterwards.

What's Next:
Rayven: I'm going to keep going and pursue this career for a while.... I just left a message with [choreographers] Tabitha and Napoleon, hoping I can get my whole body in. I've got a foot in the door, but I hope I can get my whole body in there. I think I have it, I really think I do.
Jamie: This isn't going to stop anything. If anything, 20 million people saw me dance, so that's only a good thing.

I liked both of them. I would have actually kept her over the short haired girl (Courtney- sp?) because both solos weren't that great. I think Jamie was a lot better than Matt. Nigel kept talking about technique over personality. Well, I think Jamie had technique too - he just had a different technique, which was ballroom. In his solo, he reminded me a lot of Pasha from last season and I loved watching both of them. Pasha ended up doing pretty good in the competition too. I didn't think Matt's solo or personality was enough to keep him there, but guess we'll see.

I think it was very unfair to Rayven & Jamie. They were only doing what their coreographers told them to do. I don't think that Napoleon & Tabitha showed very good taste in instructing them to pull down Jamies pants. There are young children watching the show and it was very offense to see blue tight fitting underwear and them grabbing themselves in their crotch. Where does this show any artistic ability? When Nigel commented on why they were in the bottom 3 he said that the only thing he remembered was that she pulled down his pants. Then he said that they could possibly have offened people! Do ya think!!!! Last year I was also offened when Benji pulled down his pants but at least they were boxers. I also want to comment on Mia Michels remark about Mark. I don't think it was fair to put him down before he even got a chance to perform. Right away people were expecting the worse from him. I think that the coregraphers and the Judges owe it to the dancers to be more careful. Those poor kids work so hard and one comment can make all the difference in the world. I also think you are making it very bad for Will who is an excellent dancer because of his mentore. Everyone now knows that until the very end when only the public votes Will will always be saved by his solo. Thats a shame because he is excellent. Napoleon & Tabatha much better taste with Katee & Joshua.

I liked both Jamie and Rayven. I thought that they had different styles and would have preferred some of the others (Jessica or Susie, Matt or Gev) not continue. Kourtni has a nice fan (or at least Judge fan) base. I thought Will was easily my favorite of the solo dancers, followed by Rayven and then Jamie.

Their first traditional/classical/ballet dancer and the only male ballroom dancer (assuming you count Swing) and they sent them both home. Instead they keep 16 contemporary/hip hop dancers. Yawn.

Rayven did mention something that I have noticed in the past. Hip hop tends to be the hardest transition for ballroom (and maybe ballet) dancers.

I do like this show, I have to admit, but I'm also a big fan of America's Got Talent and I'm glad to see it's starting up again tomorrow. It's got more variety than just the straight dance show. I like how they mix it up and you get all kinds of wierdos on the show too.
