CBS Still Has Island Fever, Orders More Survivors

With Season 16 of Survivor arriving Thursday, Feb. 7 (see Interviews & Features for a rundown of the Fans vs Favorites cast), CBS has ordered not one but two more cycles of the reality competition. "Survivor is a show that defies ratings gravity," CBS reality boss Ghen Maynard tells Variety. "It is a truly remarkable feat to be winning your time period in all ratings categories after 15 editions." In its most recent season, Survivor averaged 15.2 million — continuing a year-to-year slide but still drawing plenty to best its Thursday-at-8 rivals.

The real Survivor in all of this, of course, is host man Jeff Probst, who himself has signed on for the two new seasons as well. Dude must earn serious coin. His Off! budget alone....

I hope not. Survivor is this decade's first television classic. It will live on and on in some fashion, just like Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune. Its concept is timeless.......the "perfect game" as Season 2 winner Tina Wesson once said.

classic? I don't think so. I think that only scripted shows can be classics.

SupahStah ~ Cool name!:-D
Even though MTV was the first one (I think) to have reality TV ~ I think it was really Survivor that started the reality TV craze (in the USA). For you reality TV haters (Leah?!) you obviously don't like it ~ But I would consider Survivor a classic.

Some reality TV I love ~ Survivor is one of them ~ And some reality TV is just absolutely disgusting ~ Moment of Truth anyone?:-D

You are right. All these people owe everything they have to mtv and the real world/road rules. Those shows started it all.

I still don't think you can call reality tv classic. I mean, will it stand the test of time. Will people be watching it almost 50 years later like the Andy Griffith Show and Bonanza or 60 years later like I Love Lucy? I'd say it's very unlikely.

Yeah ~ I see what you mean ~ It certainly doesn't compare to those in that way. Maybe we would have to settle for calling it a reality TV classic? Or a classic Tv show with an * !

Woo-hoo! I am so excited! I LOVE this show, it's my favorite show and has been since I began watching way back in Australia. I am psyched for Micronesia and am thrilled that it will be coming back for more next year!

There has been reality TV going back to "Candid Camera" (which started out on the radio as "Candid Microphone"). PBS introduced us to the Loud family in the 70s through "An American Family" which was a documentary series, but might as well have been a reality show pre-cursor.

"Candid Camera" was unscripted and I'd call it a classic.
