Supernatural Stars Get Super-Special Honor
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in Supernatural by Sergei Bachlakov/The CW
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who play Supernatural's hunters of evildoers, got some love from their real-life sort-of counterparts. In a ceremony held on Veterans' Day in Chicago, Army Master Sgt. Kevin Wise, First Special Forces out of Baghdad, presented the actors with congratulatory letters and Special Forces coins. It seems the CW series is one of the most popular — some say the No. 1 — DVD request from military members over there. According to a letter Sgt. Wise read, watching the demon-killing Winchester brothers helps soldiers forget the stress of war and reminds them of family and home.
We're not sure what that says about the American family, but we're not about to argue with a Green Beret. So kudos, boys. — Ileane Rudolph

This is just awesome! I'm not surprised that the troops "get it"-no one would understand more! Kudos to JA and JP and everyone involved with Supernatural!

Well this just confirms to me that our guys and girls in the armed forces are smart. This is a great show, it really helps you escape from the realities of life and don't they deserve that more than anyone?

What I would say it Supernatural says to the troops about family is: Dean and Sam were raised by an ex-marine who found out about demons and monsters killing unsuspecting humans. He raised his sons to be soldiers against these monsters and to save people. The family is dysfuncial but loving, and will sacrifice themselves for eachother and for the greater good of others. They are heroes. The two main characters are two brothers who will do anything for the other, plus argue like brothers will. Supernatural is for me and a lot of other fans, first and foremost a Family Show with a side of Horror/Fantasy. It's about family and I understand perfectly the troops getting it and I'm awed as I'm sure Jensen and Jared are too that they have spoken up and given the boys such an wonderful honor.

Do you think that the Neilson people will finally start posting a true tally of who watches this show? It is so frustrating to see the numbers that Cavemen and other crap gets. Meanwhile we have to beg for 3 million.

That is beyond awesome!! Of course this show appeals to people away from home who have to depend on each other for their loves. Family, love, loyalty. That's what Supernatural really is. It's a family show where the family just happens to hunt ghosts and demons.

Thanks so much for posting this Matt! I was at the Creation con in Chicago last weekend where the presentation was made during the tandem Q&A session and the boys were visibly moved. They were a bit overwhelmed too - it was really adorable to see We all cheered like crazy and when Jared finally found his voice, he asked us all to show our support for the troops. More wild applause! All in all, a great moment in an amazing weekend.

Supernatural is the most popular show with our troops because they can identify with two young men who sacrifice eveything for the good of the world and who will never stop fighting evil. Plus, it has incredible acting, classic rock and the most kickass car on television.

I was priviledged to be there watching it unfold. It was very emotional for everyone - not just the guys on stage. It was awesome to be able to express our thanks to the troops to Master Sgt. Wise. I'm so glad that Supernatural is getting the kind of attention it deserves.

Why should Supernatural being a favorite of soldiers in war be any great surprise? It is a show about family, honor, and justice. It reveals that there is real evil in the world, but also men brave and true enough to fight it.
The Winchesters are victorious and they get the job done, sometimes under overwhelming odds. They are heroes, just like our soldiers fighting over in Iraq. In a world filled with evil and chaos, I find it comforting to retreat into a show where good will triumph over evil and the good guys can drive off into the sunset in a cool, black 67 Impala.
The show presents many complex moral issues in a fun, entertaining manner with action, humor, drama and insight. It has fantastic acting, writing, and directing, and has a different, artistic look to it. What more can you ask of a TV show?
