Supernatural Lets Katie Cassidy Go
Katie Cassidy by Sergei Bachlakov/The CW
Sexy Supernatural thief Bela (Lauren Cohan) has already been sent to hell — unlike Dean, she won’t be released — and now the show’s creator Eric Kripke tells TV Guide it’s bye bye to sexy demon Ruby (Katie Cassidy) as well.
“She’s great, but this was unfortunately a financial decision — purely budgetary, because creatively she was terrific," Kripke said. "I have nothing but great affection for Katie, and she was great for the show. It was a very difficult business decision about the realities we are in." Though the budget’s the same as last year, the show films in Canada and is suffering from a lousy exchange rate.
There will be female characters, Kripke promises. But expect more of the love ‘em, leave ‘em or kill ‘em variety. “We have a plan that’s as exciting as any we’ve ever had of how to thread new characters in some unexpected ways,” he said, adding that the season opener will have a couple of “bombshells that will set the show off in a new direction.” Just don’t mess too much with those Winchester boys! — Ileane Rudolph

That's a shame, I thought Bela and Ruby were fantastic additions to the show. On a show where men are the main charaters, women are often relegated to mere "love interest" characters, and it was great to see two women who had stories outside of being love-interest-for-Dean or somesuch.
I'm eagerly awaiting the new season, I can't wait to find out how Dean gets released. It reminds me of waiting for Buffy season 6 - we all knew she was coming back to life, but the big questions were "how?" and "how will it affect her?"
Hopefully Kripke won't let the financial problems get him down - the heart of the show are the brothers and the wonderful scripts, and as long as we have those, SPN will still be the show we've come to love.

That is really too bad. I thought Ruby's character was really coming into her own.
It's such a shame that finanical restraints have helped to make this decision.
However, thank goodness, we'll still have the true heart and nature of the show - our beloved warriors, Sam and Dean.

Okay so Bela's gone and Ruby's leaving. Hate to see Ruby go, not so much with Bela. What I want to know is are they going to get the Colt back. Bela stole the Colt from them and they were trying to find her to get it back. I don't remember them ever getting it back and Sam needs it, especially starting off without Dean.

That is a shame that such a good character addition to a teriffic show has now been let go. I think that Ruby was a great character, and the show will not be the same without her, I think that the CW and Kripke made a huge mistake on this decision.

This totally sucks that the show is being hit so hard budget-wise. Ruby was really getting interesting. Katie was improving with each episode as well.
I think we need to have a bake sale to raise money for Kripke!

A bake sale just may be a good idea.

Thankgoodness for the strong CDN loonie. This rids the show of a too convenient deus ex machina and a cringeworthy actress.

I'm sorry to see Katie go but is this the last of Ruby? She could still be around in another form.
OOOH bomshells!

I don't agree. I really thought Katie grew into the part. I enjoyed Ruby. I'm sad to see the character let go. Stupid budget cuts.

I liked the character of Ruby and I think she'll be missed. But I was not a fan of Bela. I just didn't like her. As long as they don't mess with Dean & Sam everything will be fine!!

The Canadian dollar isn't hurting enough against the plunging US dollar to justify this dumb move. Actually, no movement in any direction by either nation's dollars justifies a move this dumb.
Oh, sorry X-Men, you'll just have to do without Mystique. (rolls eyes)

Thank goodness!! This is a smart move for the show. Katie Cassidy was just not demon material. She never made me feel that she was really a demon the way Nikki Aycox did. She just came across as a pouty teenager.
As for the character of Ruby, I don't see why Kripke can't just have her appear occasionally in a different body. A short, one-time shot for an actress (like the one who played Casey so well). Ruby can still be a factor, but they don't have to contract Cassidy or another actress for the part.

I for one am not sad in the least to see Bela or Ruby go. I felt like their presence was far too forced and contrived. I mean come on, like Bela could really get that much over on our boys! And Ruby just kind of fizzled out for me. If we must have a regular female presence please bring back Jo and Ellen!!! And lets not forget more appearances by Bobby, I mean isnt Jim Beaver the greatest?! I think we need to focus less on the departure of the girls and and more on the reason....or the reason given by Eric. Budgetary problems can not bode well for the show in general. I hope this doesnt mean an early end to the best show on television.

I for one am glad she's gone. The character ran it's course, at least in Katie Cassidy's body. The body was dead(she's been shot point blank in the chest earlier in the season) and unless Ruby immediately reanimated it from whereever Lilith had sent her(which was supposed to be far far away) the show would be going against it's own canon to keep her. Theoretically Ruby could come back in some form at some point, as a guest star to keep costs down, but there would be no way to keep Katie Cassidy in the part without going against the rules the show has already established.
