Super Bowl Gets Petty with Halftime Show
Tom Petty by Theo Wargo/WireImage.com
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been tapped to pick up where Prince left off — minus the obscene silhouettes, and in the dry comfort of a domed arena. The classic-rock group will perform the halftime show at Super Bowl XLII, to be held Feb. 3 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, Fox announced during its Sunday football coverage. Petty's first halftime number, "Don't Come Around Here No More," will be dedicated to Janet and Justin.

I know the Justin and Janet comment was a joke but seriously, it was never as bad as most Americans made it out to be. The Superbowl halftime show with the exception of Prince has become a joke. Majority of the viewing audience will not remember Tom Petty. I along with many other americans will just find other ways to fill the time this whack halftime show will take up.

smuv_757- I am 25 years old and I love Tom Petty. I for one am ecstatic that the show will feature a true musician and not a performer hiding his/her lack of talent with unnecessary stunts. This year I may actually enjoy the show!

"Majority of the viewing audience will not remember Tom Petty" Are you kidding me? No offense, but you must not know much about music. I know a lot of the middle aged men and women that are a major viewing audience of football, will love to see Tom Petty instead of Justin Timberlake or someone like Fergie. I'm only 24 years old and I would rather see an experienced musician myself.

I might actually watch the Halftime Show this year! I agree that I would much rather see an actual musician play a couple songs rather than some pop divas singing a disjointed greatest hits medly.
Also regarding the superbowl-the National Anthem. I would so much prefer to hear the Navy Choir sing the song the way it was written to be sung....instead of someone singing really off the wall arrangements that last 10 minutes...

To smuv_757:
Are you kidding me about past Super Bowl half time shows? The 2002 half time show was by far the best one to date. It featured U2 singing "Where the Streets Have No Name." Obviously, you did not see this show.
While Bono was singing, a scroll of names floated into the air as the list contained names of people who died on 9/11/01. At the end of the song, Bono flashed an American flag from inside his jacket--a beautiful act from, of all people, an Irishman. (What American would do that?) You mean to tell me this half time show was not entertainment? Get a life!
As for the Jackson/Timberlake stunt, I agree that we Americans became overly concerned about it. From what I saw on TV, there wasn't even a slight flash of Ms. Jackson's nipple. We Americans need to learn there are more important things in this country to be concerned about thsn to worry about than this incident.
Come on, American people, show your pride and be thankful where you came from and who you are, both racially and internationally. We Americans are definitely spoiled to the core and only care about ourselves.
Amen.
P.S. I am not too familiar with Tom Petty's music, but I think he is a good choice. I like a few of his songs, including the one he plans to sing

TMW, you just gave me goosebumps, just like I got goosebumps during that phenomenal half-time show. I remember that it was an extremely emotional moment, since 9/11 was so recent and I was still living in NYC back then. U2 was awesome that night.
I for one, don't really care who's headlining the half-time show. I watch the game for the commercials. I'm not a football fan, so I usually leave the TV area during plays, but I come back for the commercials and I rewind them (I have DVR) to watch them again if I really like them.
But during the occasional awesome halftime show, like when U2 played, I'll sit down and watch it. Maybe Tom Petty will be awesome, too. I'm looking forward to it.

Nice to know who I'll be watching while the Patriots are in the locker room deciding on a plan of attack for the second half of their 4th Super Bowl win!

While I like Tom Petty, I wish he'd "take back" that song in which he sang "Take back Joe Piscopo/Take back Eddie Murphy/Give them all some place to go". JP and EM were two of my favorite SNLers when I grew up in the '80s so I resented him when he sang those lyrics then.

I'm 17 and would most definitely rather watch Tom Petty than Janet Jackson or Fergie...unless the Chargers make it to the bowl, Tom Petty will be the only performer I'll be watching on gameday.
Maybe next year it'll be the Boss at halftime?
