Stuck in Idol: Kelly Clarkson Can't Top 40

And the hits keep on coming... yet don't. "Never Again," the first single from Kelly Clarkson's new album streeting Tuesday, isn't the tops, say program directors for New York City's top-40 stations. "We're disappointed," WHTZ's Tom Poleman tells the New York Daily News. "It's done OK, not great." Adds WPLJ's Tom Cuddy, "We finally dropped it [in the rotation]. Listener response just wasn't there."

Worse yet, the forecast for Clarkson's follow-up single isn't much better. Says Poleman, "I've heard [it] and the potential isn't that great." "You're rooting for her to have hits," says WLTW's Jim Ryan, "but if the listeners don't love it, we can't play it." In other words, for American Idol Kelly, this isn't her now, this is her, "No, thank you."

I'm sorry, but I call BS on this. Is "Never Again" Kelly's best song ever? No. But it's still a hell of a lot better than a lot of songs that get tons of air play. More than likely Clive Davis has used his power to get the radio stations to drop her songs.

I agree. People are nuts. I have listened to a copy of Kelly's newest album and I love every song. Sure it might be dark and angry but it has passion and soul. People are idiots if they dont like it.

I saw KC's music video every morning on VH1 (not by choice though). I don't think the record company or its owner is doing anything to get the media to drop her song.

If the media drops her song, there is always the iternet.

Anyway, for those of you said that I am a troll for criticizing KC.,I did watch her MTV and it was just so so. Just a run of the mill music video. Nothing special! Nothing spectacular! I don't know what kind of image she wants to project to the listeners. There is no catchy melody or lyrics for the song "Never Again". The male actor is better acting than her in the video. If KC wants to bounce back, she should try hard to get out of AI shadow and create a completely different image!

The new material is pretty terrible, and in the end album sales and radio play will reflect that.

Good, artistic or even dark music doesn't always have to translate into a lack of hooks, melody, and zero consumer appeal. In the case of My December, fans think it does.

People still listen to Top 40?! I thought that format died out back in the mid-Nineties.

Im sorry, this is just Clive Davis flexing his musical "muscle" "Never Again" is an AWESOME song! (I like it probably because I am going thru a very painful divorce from a lying, cheating abusive husband!) anyway, stations should continue to give it airplay and it will find its audience. Kelly Clarkson is the BEST AMERICAN IDOL EVER! Mr Davis doesnt like her songs, because they are HER songs and she speaks her mind and doesnt take crap from the industry. I admire her and will continue to buy EVERYTHING she puts out!

I just don't get it. Granted, I didn't think Never Again was a great song, but it's sure as heck better than alot of stuff I am hearing. Problem is, it's not a Top 40 record. It's more rock oriented, and unfortunately I can't tell you the last time I heard a female on a rock station among Nickelback and Velvet Revolver. It's not sexist - those stations cater to 18-35 year old guys who drink domestic beer, and they're not going to listen to Kelly Clarkson.

I've heard that Kelly's next single will be "Sober". It is not a fast-paced rocker song, but it is very good. In fact, it's completely different than anything she has ever released.

First of all, I don't think every true artist can or should have every album be a super duper smash. True creativity can't appeal to everyone all the time.

Secondly, if you take a listen to most of Top 40, you could make an arugment that being dropped by that format is a compliment.

Kelly my dear - please do not shave your head, be seen without underwear, and then drive while intoxicated. Our children could really use a role model from your generation!

I also like Never Again, but the song is a little angry like an Alanis Morrisette song circa 1995.

I know it isn't from her album but Kelly is getting lots of air play on country thanks to her duet with Reba for Reba's upcoming album Duets. I like that version of Because of You.

It seems only one former Idol can have success at a time. irsdt it was Clay then Kelly and now Carrie has taken ove.

By the wa for people that think Idol is all pop there are currently 4 former Idols all over country radio. You have Carrie Underwood, Kelly Pickler, Joshua Grcin, and Bucky Covenington(he doesn't even sound the same as he did on Idol).
