Stopped Motion: CBS Cuts Creature Comforts

Creature Comforts by Aardman Animations/CBS
CBS has pulled the Aardman-animated Creature Comforts from its schedule effective immediately, says Futon Critic, and for the time being, at least, will fill the Mondays-at-8 slot with even more repeats of The New Adventures of Old Christine.

After premiering to 6.3 million total viewers, Creature Comforts most recently was sampled by 4.66 and, just this past Monday, 4.3 million people.

Talk about your clay achin'!

Why oh why oh why do networks even bother putting something original on? What is the point of starting to watch a new show when they just pull it after it airs a mere 3 times? They seriously couldn't expect it to get huge ratings since it was on during the summer? Guess I will have to go get some play-dough to send into CBS as a protest!

I was gonna try to remember to watch this too!

My opinion is when networks yank a show before even a month, they had no faith in the show to begin with. They never expected it to last. It sucks, but we've seen it too many times with too many great shows for me to believe anything else. (I'm not saying this is a great show, I'm saying great shows have been canceled that fast - like wonderfalls - only 4 eps aired.)

What an insult to such a creative and hilarious program! I have a tape of the original "Creature Comforts" short film (which won many awards) and had always hoped to see more. So now, CBS finally airs an American version of the British show and abruptly cancels it.

Does it say more about CBS, or about American TV viewers who are just too dull-witted to appreciate a truly clever program?

Well, I'm glad I have all 3 of these new episodes on tape (screw dvrs) to keep and enjoy for years to come.

NO! How very disappointing. It was such a refreshing change from anything else that any networks had to offer this summer. It was so funny. Seriously disappointing.

Dammit Jim! Such a sorry way to treat a loveable and mood altering program. I hate that they are yanking this one, too.

There goes one of the few highlights of the summer. Matt, do you know if the unaired episodes will be on CBS's website?

As a fan of the British versions (film and TV), I must profess my love for Creature Comforts and I am sad to see it go.

BUT, amid all the usual and predictable bitching and moaning here about the "lack of faith" and the other blah blah blah that CBS showed in the program, let us keep in mind that it takes VIEWERS to keep a show on the air...and Creature Comforts was losing them by the boatloads. While basic cable (and The CW) would commit murder for a 4.3 rating, a broadcast network just can't afford to do it, even in the summer. Broadcast networks are a business.

So, farewell, Creature Comforts! I will remember you fondly....especially as I watch the episodes I purchased on iTunes.

Clay Achin'? Oh, Matt, that was awful!

CBS? Seriously? It's SUMMER. How many viewers were you expecting? 11.3 million?? Get a clue!

I'm getting an ominous feeling about Jericho. These people have unreal expectations.

Hooray! This means more Christine! We need CBS to be all Christine, all the time. (yep... sarcasm)

That's too bad. I thought that it was funny and a clever concept. It'll be interesting to see how many viewers CBS gets now. I think that they overestimate how many people watch TV during the summer.
